Hat ribbon advice please?

Post by jones the whip »

As you can see from this pic, the center of the bow on my HJ Poet has a single fold.
I've seen some Raiders hats with a similar configuration but I'm not sure if it's LC SA which is the style I'm hoping to eventually achieve.
Can anyone advise please?

The Raiders hat never hat a bow knot like that. The knot on your hat is very much like the knot on the LC hat.

Thank you so much folks. :D That's a bonus!
I had asked for LC specs upon ordering this hat, but I did not realize the bow had a fold like this. It's difficult to find this particular detail in screenshots.

The ToD and LC hats had this style bow, if I'm not mistaken. This further proves Steve's theory that the Raiders hat was a custom job. This bow has and is the standard Poet bow. the Raiders bow is totally different. Post some more pictures of the hat. I'd like to see it on your head, as I'm sure others here would as well.

I believe that this is right; The raiders hat had the "flying v" ribbon on it (which we all love!) TOD and LC hats used HJ's that did not have the signature puffy "flying v" and in order to emulate that a pleat was formed and the crease was ironed in. Like I said, I think that is the case.

Ok, John, lets see if I hit 3 for 3. I believe that the reason why the flying V (I hate using that term becuase I think of the Gibson Guitar that I still don't own. I have my dream Gibson Les Paul, so I'm not complaining) isn't as defined on the ToD and LC bows becuase it has one hidden stitch, under the knot. The Raiders stitch had an extra hidden stitch that allowed the hat to puff more and create that famous V shape. The fact that the bow was pulled considerably tighter on the Raiders bow helped a lot as well. Lets hope I got that all right.

Can't remember where I read that, but I know it is somewhere here. I'll see if I can find it.

At your request I've taken some more pics of the hat, reluctantly I may add as I'm currently experiencing some taper (due to over messing around with). It' due for a re-block.

If you're wondering, this HJ Poet was bought direct from Swaine Adeney Brigg in London.
Although it was initially blocked at the HJ premises in Barhill, Cambridgeshire, the bash is largly my own work, with the help of several household items.

The crease looks great, but I think it is more Temple of Doom than Last Crusade. I prefer that crease, too. I think the crease on that hat had a lot to do with the perceived taper, or at least most of it. See if you can't take some of that taper away by just adjusting the bash.

It's a very nice hat, JTW. How long ago did you come by it?

It look like the bow is a hybrid. Raiders bow with a TOD/LC knot.

I think SAB may sew their HJ ribbon on by hand because that looks nothing like the HJ ribbons I've seen before. If so, thats a good thing because the standard HJ/Christy's bow is one of the most hideous things I've ever seen.

Thanks buddy, I bought this hat back in March 2008. I literally walked into Swaine Adeney in St James Street, and said "I'm looking for the Herbert Johnson Poet hat"!

The front/top of the crown may be a touch high, so by adjusting in comparison to the back I might remove some of the taper. However, I only live about 16 miles from the HJ warehouse in Cambridgeshire, so I'll probebly just take it over there.

I wish I had a big gear vendor around me. I envy the guys that live around the big boys like Steve, John, Wested, Nowak, etc...

Dropping the height of the hat up front will add to the taper in your hat. From your description of the hat, I would say you need to raise the back. I think that pushing the side dents back a little further and giving each one an upside down V shape will give you a better LC look. Right now it looks more like a ToD hat. Personally, I would leave it as it is, but I favor the ToD hat to the LC.

Thanks again mate,
This hat has a life of it's own and I think I will take your advice on the side dents. I'd really like to get back the stovepipe shape that it originally had.

If you send that hat to Oak, he can have that hat looking BETTER than it did when you received it. The man works magic.

Yes, but I would like to give a word of caution: The standard HJ Poet is a factory-made hat with a machine-sewn sweat. This means the felt is perforated along the brim break like this:
--------------- (the open spaces between the dashes being the holes)
This causes a risk of tearing the hat when it's being reblocked. I'm not saying it will tear, just that there is a slight chance it will.

I reblocked my Christy's, which is also machined sewn, and didn't rip the brim off. I was very careful. I've heard of this happening on more than one occasion. I don't even know IF John will work with an HJ, but it's worth a shot.
