A trick from the Jacket forum

Post by darthbish »

Last night, I put my Fed in a clothes dryer with 12 tennis balls, set it on "cool"...(no joke intened :anxious: )...and left it for 2 1/2 hours.

All I can suggest is that if anyone wants to soften their felt...THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT..
I'm VERY happy with it :D :D :D :D

When you say Fed, I assume you mean an Akubra (some people use Fed as generic for fedora). Did the shape of the hat change any?(for good or worse) Also, I'm tempted to use the this thread is useless without pics emoticon, but do pictures illustrate the change that occured.

it just...happened...
It got SOAKING wet in Thailand so I shoved the round water-reservoir off a big ### waterpistol..(wrapped in a towel) inside it, to try and avoid taper when it dried....and presto

I have an old Fed, my Penman replaced it anyway I wore it to cut grass and by the time I was doen it was really wet and soft, I feel if you just wear stuff and use it with everyday things it will osften or wear. Putting things in the dryer from my experince, which is our dryer broke and I tried to drum soften clothes is a bad idea. I put holes in some good jeans that way.Good luck :)

As with any of these techniques, we should always add the disclaimer..."Your results may vary."

....just like they do on TV. ;)

THANK YOU Mike!
Ever since I read that first post that very question has been going through my mind!
But you do get high marks from me for inspired creativity, darthbish.
I'm just glad this worked for you!

Nice work bish. That last iteration definitely has lost most (if not all) of the taper that was present in some of the earlier photos. It looks really relaxed . . . . .

Better ad another 12 tennisballs though: I guess your boss is a bit bigger than Bish's hat ;)
