I thought about taking a hat when it first arrives, line it with some light mil plastic, spray some of that "form to shape" packaging foam in it and end up with a custom shaped piece of foam to stick on the end of a stand. You'd only half to fill up about the first 6 inches of the hat to get most of the shape.
Has anyone done something like this already? It would take very long and it would certainly maintain the shape of the hat when not wearing it.

I'm currently using a vintage hat block as a stand. Whatever hat that doesn't fit on my hat/coat rack that is in my current rotation gets a spot on the block.

lantzn,
Did you ever try making your custom hat stand? Pics, please, if you did.

I got to get a hat first. I have an AB CS on order but don't expect to see it until winter. I'm so tempted to just go ahead and order a Gray seaplane from Penman here in the NW where I live to try to kill the pain. I'm wearing one of those cheap Indy knockoff hats with my Nowak CS and it just doesn't do it justice.Indiana MarkVII wrote:lantzn,

I'll definitely post them when made. There are a variety of foams on the market. It's important to use a slow rising foam that doesn't expand to much or it will just end up distorting the shape of the hat. Some of the home insulation foams that are designed for around windows might be a good choice because they don't expand to much so that the windows will slide open correctly. These types of foams will specifically say for use around windows.
Now that the weather is warming up I think I'll experiment with some different foams.

Do you need an excuse to order a Penman? Get one. That way it will help the wait for your AB and you can make the stand.
