Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS?
I voted Raiders, but one of your options and your post clash slightly. Post seems to be about what look we like for the character, while the options suggest it's about what look we want to replicate with our gear.
For many, the answer is the same, but not for me. I like the Raiders looks best, but it's not for me in terms of gear. Even before CS existed, my gear look was more in that vein.

I'm all about the Raiders look, and all my gear is Raiders style. So I selected both ROTLA. I like the slimmer look to everything in Raiders, and my own personal style is slim fitting as well, so it kind of goes hand in hand.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS?
its funny.
I love the raiders gear. and I voted raiders too.
but Indy has one really cool look sometimes in CS.
look at this shot. this shot is THE coolest CS gear shot ever IMO.
i LOVE it. it looks really lived in. has a kind of ''sloppy'' look to it. and the gear just screams Indiana jones to me. I think mostly that has to do with the jacket looking darker and the pants are more closer in color to raiders. It has to do with the lighting in other words. to bad he couldnt look like this in the entire movie.....
everythime I see this picture I can see a connection to raiders.

Agreed, the only 'gear' weakness in CS was that he had to drag along Shia the whole movie.........Indiana Holt wrote:its funny.

I voted Raiders both ways simply because my build is most similar to Ford in Raiders vs CS. BUT I could have voted for liking the gear in both, even if CS makes him look his age. [see higher pants and baggy jacket.]

The thing is (in my opinion), the Raiders gear looks cool in every single frame of the movie. You really have to cherry pick to find good looking shots of the CS stuff. Granted, the shots in this tread of the CS stuff are cool.
Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
I'm with Holt 100%. I love the baggy, rumpled, worldly duds that Indy sports in KOTCS, which is simply a continuation of his LC outfit. It's a more comfortable outfit for a more mature adventurer. Crystal Skull all the way.

I'm buying what I can afford, and have been a fan since Raiders, but I've arrived at a stage of life where the slimmer fits are just not going to work. I'm reasonably fit and active, my pants still sit mostly at my navel and my chest is a good bit bigger around than my waist, but a Raiders style would be an obvious "costume" while CS is clothes.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
OK. I'm happy now.
My thing, which is a little weird, is that as a movie outfit, the CS looks like Indy Gear. In other words, it seems more like HF joined COW and put together his take on the Indy outfit, just like the rest of us, making choices that for one reason or another are not SA to the original three. Like me.
The Raiders movie look seem more genuine. The distressing seems more natural (though it isn't), the way it kind of hangs off of him like a wet noodle, the particular shades of color. It looks more like what the guy wears without thinking about it. In CS, Indy just looks way too put together.
That said, I still think the outfit looks great in CS. If I'm not comparing, I have zero issues with it. And it certainly seems to be the most comfortable of the gear versions. Between that and the fact that my body shape does not take kindly to most other versions of the gear, it's small wonder my look was so CS before CS was ever made.

Wow, Chewbacca - you really nailed it. CS feels too self conscious on too many levels - including the costume.
I agree with Holt - the "travelling" with backpack shot is V cool, mainly because the whole outfit works - jacket looks darker, etc. It looks exactly like the way you feel when you've been travelling, getting stuff done without regard for looks - you're just too stuffed and focussed on the job. IE the Raiders look. I actually connected with this recently when I ended up hiking here and there in the backstreets and mountains of Japan doing photographic work, using my MK7 bag for my camera gear, light tripod slung off belt instead of a whip. Maps, etc stuffed in jacket pockets. Works very well - you've got the gear because you need it, and have to lug it around so much you forget it's there. Raiders vibes that, CS doesn't.
Edit - If I sound like "Coach" from Survivor in this post, I profusely apologise! Hopefully you get what I'm trying to say.

My body structure also favors CS. In the films, I prefer the Raiders look on the younger Ford, but the CS look suits him as an older guy.

I wish I would have had an option for LC gear. I like some things about that film more than Raiders or CS - but I voted Raiders in the poll.
Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
ToD gear looked best, but Raiders seemed most natural somehow.
Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
I would have voted LC had it been an option, but I went with ROTLA. In my opinion, Indy's CS gear looks too big and loose, making Indy look like a shriveled old man. Plus there's a difference in loose and comfortable and plain old wearing clothes that just don't fit. I don't know how he didn't trip over his own pant legs. Indy shall always be an inspiration and hero, but I prefer to remember him young.
Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
I hated KOTCS. In my opinion, Ford took a back seat to Shia (and the aliens) throughout the film. For me, ROTLA has and always will be THE Indy film. .....and all the gear associated with Raiders, to me, are the best.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
raiders all the way.......BUT, the fact remains:
the CS jacket fits the body the way a jacket should. it is a functional jacket.
the raiders jacket is built to be a costume jacket which is why it doesn't fit very well.
case in point: i've been wearing my raiders jackets for a good 6 months....got use to the 'off the shoulder' slippage and the overall way it sits on my frame. i wore my CS jacket a couple times last week and it felt like a well tailored jacket with no need to adjust for anything (it was night and day)....the CS feels like a well tailored suit jacket and sits exactly where its suppose to sit and doesn't move around all over the place. big tony knows the mechanics of a jacket, plain and simple.
now, THAT being said......the reason why i (and most of you) love the raiders jacket is because of the character it has from being a 'costume spec' jacket.....it don't fit, it slides around, the collar is unproportionally big, the front sits lower than the back......all of that in one package makes this jacket very attractive for collectors imo. the CS jacket, being too well made, being too functional, doesn't give the jacket much life or character....but heck, its an extremely nice wearing jacket.
just my 2 penny's. i was tempted to buy another CS just because of the fit......but i searched deep down and realized, i'm a raiders man

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
I've grown to like the CS look much more (and the film much less) but I think Raiders wins out beacuse the film was so great and Harry was young. The look is associated with a much better vibe all around.
The CS jacket is a good design, but I have never cared for the leather. In goatskin I may have been more positive.
If I were going to buy a TN it would be a TN CS with my own tweaking. Perhaps longer pocket flaps (more LC) and certainly goatskin. I'm not all that concerned about screen accuracy.

Well I wne t ROTLA. It was the first and had had the most profound impact on my memory / mind. The CS is nice, particularly the image posted above, however it is somehow not 'right'. While I don't have a body shape that, some may say, suits the CS look better, I just can't NOT have a ROTLA jacket. If I could only have one, it would be ROTLA. Second would probably be LC, but that may be more to do with the film being SUBSTANTIALLY better than CS, the jackets are pretty similar.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
This has to be one of the most interesting and well thought analysis of Indy that I've read. And to answer your question, I'd say that you're not alone in your mix and match by any stretch of the imagination. However, my tastes lie on the opposite end of the spectrum of yours (as well as everybody here, it seems!).neutronbomb wrote:Anyway, interesting about the psychology of people. I think overall most people buy the gear of what they actually like the overall look of most. I suspect that means most people will choose the ROTLA look button and the ROTLA gear button or the CS look button and the CS gear button. But it seems for me, I go for the cognitive dissonance choice.
I'm a fan of the Raiders jacket on screen, mainly because, as many have pointed out, it is undeniably a costume jacket at heart. To me, I find it an over-the-top characterization of what an adventurer's leather jacket would be, and it is brilliant in that regard, because isn't that what movies are for the most part essentially suppose to do? Present us with caricatures that would make an impact in our minds?
However, as it is an over-the-top costume jacket, it doesn't necessarily translate well to daily use (in my opinion), in the same way that an over-the-top ABBA costume or even dramatic Hollywood dialogue might not come across well in everyday reality.
For that, I turn to the Crystal Skull jacket, which again as many others have pointed out is a more functional and realistic interpretation of the Indy jacket. I am a big fan of the Crystal Skull look in life off-screen, because even though it may lack that 'razzle dazzle' and Hollywood exaggeration of the Raiders jacket, is still a solid jacket that more easily blends in with day to day life without making one stand out like a sore thumb.
Unfortunately, I also think this is where the Crystal Skull jacket fails on screen. Since it lacks the exaggeration of the Raiders jacket, I feel it just isn't as cinematic as the Raiders jacket. Of course, this view of mine is a debatable one, because there are many who would argue that cinema deserves to be grounded in reality versus theatrics (for example, consider Apocalypse Now {somewhat realistic war movie} vs Star Trek {pure fantasy} , though even that's a stretch). But then again, this is more of a problem for just about all the main Crystal Skull gear pieces, since it was a conscious decision to have gear that could stand up to abuse.
In the end though, I still own both variations of the jackets and would be unable to part with either one! It's just that I would personally feel more at home in a Crystal Skull jacket because the Raiders jacket is too awesome for everyday!

I do have to say, I DO wear my bag strap OVER the jacket when on a proper "expedition". It's just more comfortable with the leather as a buffer; and easier to get on & off, etc. Don't know if it looks as cool - prob neither here nor there - but definitely more practical.
And no, I didn't have to play those "look through the circular holes" games when I was in the Amazon!

I voted for Raiders,
because Raiders is what started it all, the clothes in raiders look lived in and in CS they didn't they looked new and designed, and not as much indy. ( the jacket and the hat did) not so much the shirt and pants, although they did too some were cut/sweatied I think of all the movies the CS gear looked the least worn. ( but thats my take on it ) thats why i chose raiders.

the lamb breaks in in about 10 minutes .....but takes a while for it's molding process.Hatch wrote:G, know you've got the TN Raiders in original Lamb and in cow....can you give us your take on how each fits, moves, breaks in etc.........
the cow takes a while to break in and does not mold as the lamb does.
the lamb drapes in all sense of the word......she just hangs nicely off your shoulders as well as 'off your shoulders'. the cow, being more stiff, tends to keep it's rigidity better when you have it on.....kinda feels like you can still stand it up on it's own when you place it on the ground....but it doesn't
the cow is warmer......which is why i bought it. both are exceptionally fine leather jackets.

It makes sense about the pants and shirt though Dutch. You know I think we are supposed to believe he has had multiples of each over the years. Hats and jackets too, but I suspect he doesn't necessarily go through those as fast.Dutch_jones wrote:I voted for Raiders,

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
The reason I chose to buy the CS jacket had little to do with my favorite look.
I was very disappointed with the CS movie, but I had witnessed the filming in New Haven, which was quite a different matter. I realized it was probably the only chance I'd ever have to see an Indiana Jones movie being filmed, which made it a special experience for me.
I was interested in getting the jacket as a memento or souvenir of that experience, and the maker's reputation was what finally sold me on it.
As it turned out, though, the CS jacket was a better match for my phsique than the Raiders style jackets I already had.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
Funny twist.
what IF the 'raiders of the lost ark' Indy was dressed up with all the ROTLA gear only with the CS cowhide jacket from today instead of the lambskin raiders jacket they made in the 1980's.
and the CS Indy from today would have the lambskin raiders jacket as the ''new'' recreated indy jacket...
I think that people would go nuts to get a screen accurate CS cowhide ''raiders'' jacket over the last 30 years. think about it..then we wouldnt talk about drape or lambskin, the dark colour the raiders jacket has.etc.etc.. we would want the stiff thick cowhide jacket which doesnt drape and doesnt fall of the shoulders. we would see that as THE indy jacket.we would see THAT jacket as the raiders of the lost ark jacket...
then 30 years later CS comes out. They ''tried to recreate the jacket as they tried to recreate Indy as a character. (almost succesfull) On the jacket side they used a drapy lambskin to recreate the Indy jacket. Dont you think people would just hate it or not like it? Dont you think people would talk about how it being too drapy. too weak. too thin. too dark and people would hate the shabby, sloppy of the shoulders look. I mean what is that all about???
just thinking outload....

I have long said that Harrison Ford (and his whipcracking alter-ego) makes getting old cool. So there is a screen-accurate Indy look for all stages of life. At 30, I guess I'm in the Raiders phase, though I overwhelmingly prefer the Last Crusade/Crystal Skull style. But, to each his own.

I think on second thoughts , this poll doesn't work.
The raiders and the CS jackets are too apart from each other.
if you're going to be comparing, why not do a which do you like more RAIDERS-TOD and LC-CS because those two groups of jackets are more like the other than the 1st movie and the last movie.

Re: Which Indy look do you prefer? Raiders or CS? Two Vote Poll
I'd say I prefer the Indy look from RAIDERS as it's ICONIC, but I got gear from CS as it is easy and possible to get exact SA gear from the makers of the items seeing as the film is so recent.

I think only gearheads like us would even care. The look works, the precise details are irrelevant in my mind.
