MkVII Original VS Magnoli

Post by BazzanoJones »

Here's a little gallery that I've made to compare an original MkVII with the Magnoli replica. Hope you like it.
My final vote is 7/10: the Magnoli replica it's very well detailed and assembled but NEED to change the canvas color to a more greenish one.

You're welcome!

This is just a few compare shots. I don't say that the Magnoli tan bag it's a blasphemy for an Indy fan...I've only wrote my opinion (and 7/10 is not a bad vote...); peoples can agree or disagree with me. ;)

Maybe I must write a disclaimer at the beginning of my post, like on a DVD special feature: "The opinions in the following lines not reflect those of all COW members".

Thanks for all the bag pics,BJ. I've been considering getting an extra bag. I'm leaning towards the Mag bag though.Nice! BTW, I like the tan color too! 8)

I like it too, the Magnoli tan MkVII it's a very nice everyday bag.
But, for sure, it haven't an Indy gear SA color... :-s

I only say that. It's not my intention to impose my personal taste, but a simple ascertainment that the real/movie bag had a different color. ;)

It looks good! Could use a tad bit of green, but I think it still looks pretty darn good. I'm thinking about getting one to have as a spare just in case something happens to my WPG.

It's M.C. for "Magnoli Clothiers"? :-s

I've bought my original here, on Bazaar, few days ago, from the member Whiskyman.

That could be, but I thought there was an original manufacturer of these who was M.C.Ltd as well?

EDIT: sorry, I haven't understand your question. Now I'll try to aswer:

The IndyGear site list many original manifacturer names and the "M.C. Ltd." is not on the list; there is only a "M.C. & Co."
Maybe the M.C. in the replica bag really mean "Magnoli Clothiers"... ;)

Of my original bag I don't know the manifacturer because there isn't any comprehensible stamp, logo, etc. on it: on the inside of the main cover there is a very very faded stamp, but unfortunately it's quite vanished. :(

M.C. Ltd = Magnoli Clothiers Ltd.

It's not an original, it's a replica. I have the exact same bag.

Yes. I knew that. I was thinking M.C. Ltd, although used by Magnoli on their replica bag, was also the name of a maker of originals. That's why i had asked if Bazzano's original bag was a a 'M.C.Ltd" for comparison.
I was under the impression that both M.C.Ltd and M.C. & Co. had been used. I guess not.

Ah ok. The funny thing is, the Magnoli bags will likely become as much sought after as the originals in 50 years.

Within 50 years the WWII bags will be broken, completely rotten or simply vanished...so, the Magnoli bags will become the originals! :D
And, within 50 years, we will hear Indy geeks talking about a Mag Bag: "Oh, look...this is for sure an original...it have also the manifacturer stamp!"

I can see that happening with a lot of good reproductions of military gear from WW2

Why adding 1942 on the Magnoli replicas? Won't that deceive "ignorant" folks who know nothing about WW2 gear or indy gear from purchasing something from the 40's when it is not?

Thanks for the comparison Bazzano, I can finally notice the material difference (being more "gross-grain" in the Magnoli replica). I wonder where he got the hardware parts (buttons and vents)... I suppose they were reproduced (?).

About the colour, I don't consider the Magnoli replica bag too off. I've seen plenty original ones of that colour... if I had to dislike the Magnoli replica bag for something, the colour would be the last thing.

Here are some more valid points:
- different (less fine) material
- slightly odd look compared to an original one (don't know why but it looks slightly odd to my eye)
and
- last but not the least, the presence of a deceiving "authentic-looking" brand with year (1942). I understand it would be cool for indy fans to have something like that but as a collector of these bags (the original ones) I find this detail slightly... upsetting. I prefer if these had the old Magnoli Clothier tag to make them distinctive as replicas... afterall the inside is not important for screen accuracy.

Yes, I know that there are real bags kaki or light brown. But my observation it's aimed to make a comparison with the specific Indy bag: Indy bag is green, no doubt about it. ;)

I haven't made a pic of it but the (nice) Magnoli tag is sewed inside in this new bags also. :)
Yes, the false stamp it's a kind of "artificial" Hollywood detail...but I like it.

In my opinion for an Indy costume purpouse (I want to specify that) the different canvas color is the biggest flaw of that bag. For others details, although not 100% accurate, I think that they works pretty well to pass a "3 Meters" test. :)

Half packet of Dylon Olive Green Fabric Dye was the solution for my Magnoli Mkvii... Perfect Mix of OD and Khaki in different light.

Very very nice Heyjude! :D
I think that this green colorant was the ideal (and, IMHO, necessary) solution for the new Mag Bag.

thank you. I suspected that but wasn't sure.

It's an interesting colour difference. Not as much green as I'd expect for using 'Dark green' dye.
It came out nicely.

Thanks RC.. only used 1/4 of the amount that was suppose to be used.. an a little bit of salt.. let soak for a few secs and then rinse in cold water to get the dark out.. let dry and then voila! the perfect color.. its better in person.. i use to have an original and this color matches exactly.

Have one coming this week. Would like to change the color. So what you are saying is put bag in bucket of warm water with salt. Add only a quarter of the amount of dye. Rinse in cold water. How long do you let sit in the dye?

i used a large bowl, microwave for 2 mins..put a 1/4 amount in, maybe just a pinch, use a pinch of salt, mix, put in until the whole bag is the same color, take out right away and startin rinsing in hot once and then cold the rest of the time until water runs clear..
now this is only for Rit Dark green
any questions feel free to pm me
Good Luck 8)
