MKVII Bag - How much can fit in one?

Post by AZ Pete »

I am interested in getting a MKVII bag. However, I am concerned about the size. I have read a few posts that touch on the subject. Just curious how much can actually fit in a bag that size? Can anyone offer any insight, maybe provide some examples of how you use the bag for general everyday use?

Thanks for the help!

I have no pics to back up mycomments I'm afraid but trust me it's unreal how much stuff fits in one of these bags.

There are older threads about this subject.

I stuff mine with tons of things everyday. I have used my Magnoli bag for 7 months now. I don't know about the original MKVII, but my Mag Bag is a great everyday bag.

I can typically fit...

Water bottle
Wells lamont Gloves
Compass
Small paperback (The Hobbit)
Indiana Jones Journal
Scarf
Pocket knife
Lighter
Pencil eraser
Small journal

With a small amount of wiggle room.

Very good! Thanks all. Sounds like I will be able to fit more than I thought. Typically, I would be carrying a small lunch, small daytimer/journal, iPod Touch, water bottle, paperback book, pen and maybe a thin file folder (8-1/2x11). Will a file folder fit? I would assume so based on the dimensions I have seen.

Thanks again,

Pete

Except for the 81/2x11 folder, you should be fine. The bag simply isn't big enough for that item. But the rest... no problem.

The folder might fit. I removed the center divider to make more room for when I eventually buy a Netbook.

Yeah but a Net book is much smaller than a file folder

Well at least my Acer Aspire one is. I got it for taking to school.

Well...I bit the bullet and ordered a bag and strap from Wade. I went with the distressed Raiders strap. Looking forward to getting it! I just hope it is big enough. By the comments on this thread I think it will be okay. My current bag is WAY too big, so I should be good to go now. Thanks to all for your replies.

Yesterday I went to shoot some photos around town and fit my Nikon D40, 2 lenses, and a Holga with room left over. It was bulky, but everything fit.

this may seem an obvious observation, but the inside pockets, while organizing the space better in order to avoid a chaos of items, also limit the space. by removing them, you would be able to fit a dictionary in a MKVII

I should really take a picture of it soon. But I recently purchased a new netbook (with a 10.2" screen) and was looking for a bag to carry it in. Since most good messenger bags that aren't modeled towards school children or anime fans cost a lot more than I was willing to pay, I thought I could use my MkVII bag. Voila! It fits perfectly. It now carries my netbook, a moleskine notebook from Borders, AC adapter, wireless mouse, pens, pencils, business cards (will carry in the future), spare batteries for the mouse, and eyedrops for my contact lenses.

Boy, I sure do love how Indy costume gear has real uses in everyday life. :H:

As a personal adventure bag: MRE or first aid kit, water bottle, moleskine, pen, whistle, combi-tool, small LED light, wallet, cellphone, camera.
As a baby adventure bag: diapers, wipes, bottle, formula singles, baby food, spoon, towel, changing pad.

For some strange reason I just love the way that my elsa lighter fits in that small compartment located in the center of the divider flap. Anybody else notice this?

I wear my mk vii as a camera bag, and it fits a nikon d50, a 70-300mm lens, a mini tripod, and some extra junk that i might be needing at the moment. it's quite spacious for it's size. oh and hello world! my first post :D

For those of you who are using the MK VII as a camera bag, are you worried about the lack of padding?

What surprised me about the bag is that it seems like it's much bigger on the inside than the outside. It seems quite small on the outside, but you can put a ton of things in there.

In my bag I got:

- my buscard
- my wallet
- my Zune 80gb (+ protection cover)
- my Tyler Durden sunglasses
- my pocket reference guide (my first mythbusters prop :P)
- two pens
- my camera
- my keys
- two pocket knives
- my local busplan
- occasionally a notebook of some kind
- my cellphone
- some gloves (sometimes)

I simply cannot live without this bag.
I got a Magnoli Bag by the way.

I have an original Mk VII and I've been able put in at one time:

two cell phones
two sets of keys
four cigars
one long stemmed gandalf styled pipe
large box of matches
a leatherman
one camera
two wallets
one pirate coin purse
a bag of pipe tobacco
a pipe tool
and some cigaretts.

That was just one trip to ren faire....

I've used it as a school bag, an adventure bag, a motorcycle bag....you name it.

My wife and kids tease me all the time about carrying my MK VII. Since I originally posted this topic I have purchased an original MK VII as well. So now I have a Mag Bag and an original MK VII. I use both bags interchangeably depending on the situation. I use it for work, around town and kids sporting events, etc. I have found that the bags are very versatile. Currently, I am carrying it to work (and tonight to a dinner theater thing with the kids). I will have in it:

Kleenex
Small first aid kid (homemade - a necessity with kids)
Multi tool
Eye drops for contacts
Wallet
Moleskine
A couple of pens
Water bottle
Ipod Touch
Camera
Gum
Tickets

And there is plenty of room to spare!

I agree with the above comment...It looks small from the outside but has a lot of capacity on the inside.

I love these bags!!!

I work as a wire service photographer and use my MK VII as a camera carry-all. The fact that it has no padding is a huge plus for me. I find padded camera bags way to bulky and just get in the way. I have never had a camera or lens get damaged inside a non-padded bag. Most damage occurs during use or from being careless and dropping equipment. Another big plus of the MK VII is that it looks nothing like a camera bag and is less likely to draw the attention of thieves unlike the padded/dedicated camera bags sold in camera shops.

Cheers

Mine are way to big to fit in as well:

I carry my cameras over each shoulder ready for use and the MK VII under the camera on my left shoulder. When I need to pack my cameras away they fit very nicely into a canvas overnight bag (un-padded) with the MK VII in between the camera bodies.
