Mitch, thats what you get when you miss the staff meetings.
Brian did a good job with the pics but I'm sure you wife is better eye candy then he is.

I think I will be putting this prototype Raider brown rabbit distressed up for sale. I can't go around where I live and wear this hat.
Re: New Raiders Penman block updated pics 4/19/09
Well, like I said, I'm very glad that I ordered my Raiders at a perfect time to get this block. And with the extra little process John's going to do, I absolutely can't wait to get this hat on my large mellon.

I just need his head to swell up another 1/8 inch for it to be the same size as mine!

John,
Keep the hat. Just save it to wear to a sci-fi convention surrounded by Indiana Jones fans. You'll be mobbed! And orders will come streaming in pushing your turn around time from months to ye....ABORT!! ABORT!!! Cease message now. Danger Will Robinson!! Continuing this message will endanger getting a hat from John in a reasonable time frame!
Ending transmission!

Let's see, wash, dry, shrink to size 21 1/2.
Yeah, that's it! Then it will fit!
Well, maybe....
Seriously, that is a great looking hat John. You had me talked into beaver, but this looks incredible!

HJoe

So Oak.... will even your grey Raiders be off this block?
If so... then I am guessing this is what my hat will look like:

If you ordered in feb. Should be going on the block in may then. 3 month turn around time and I have been staying up to my projected time now for 5 months. May will be hard for me to stay on time but I think I can still do it. I have a 2 weekend class to recert my EMT- Basic. I know why would I do it but I'm not happy closing that door to the fire department and not a bad thing to have the way the economy is right now. This shouldn't slow me down unless sitting in that class messes up my back so I have to take more time of from hat making during the week.
Re: New Raiders Penman block updated pics 4/19/09
Yep, May is what I was thinking. Don't worry about it Oak, I am not in a hurry or anything.
And if getting the recertification for your EMTmakes you happy, you should definitely do it. I know firefighting is a big part of your life and something like that is not easy to turn away from.

Good luck with the re-certification. Fire fighting is honorable work, can't blame you for wanting to keep yourself involved and up to date with your training. I hope the classes go easy on your back, because back pain is no fun at all.
I was trying to keep everyone in the loop thats all. I don't know how my back will be sitting in a class all day. I might need a couple of day to recover I might only need one. I don't know. I thought it might be helpful to let people know as not to leave people in the dark.
After saying all that. I took apart your hat today and pulled it over a block. I have good and bad news for you. Good news you should be receiving you hat on the quoted time. Now the bad news, With the brim cut job you did to it and the fact that the felt shrank a tad. I can't make you an Indy hat.
Either Pm , e-mail or call me so to find out what hat we could make this into.

I like the liner as it's simple and classy. Which brings me to this....some liners fade or the design rubs off. Does yours? And could you explains the story behind the design of the liner? I can't think of the name for the "bicycle" on the liner, but I was curious as to how you decided upon it.

There really isn't that many who make liners. This is the same guy that many hand made hatters use both western and dress. I think they will fade over some time but they don't cost much and don't take me to long to sew in. very easy to replace and the turn around time would be nothing.WhipDude wrote:I like the liner as it's simple and classy. The bike is called Penny farthing. Penny farthing are both british coins, One large and one small.

I hereby declare that Oak's AMAZING Penman Distressed Rabbit Raiders Fedora is the NEXT hat I get from Oak!
(Unfortunately for My Penman "Crusade", Blade Runner "Eddie" Custom and Bogart Big Sleep "Marlo" Custom... they've now been pushed back a little on my "To Do" List and now have to wait a little longer to be made!)
Ah well...
For ME, the Penman Distressed Rabbit Raiders simply HAS to be next from John...

Sorry, Dave... No, that's not how I meant it... what John's saying is true:DR Ulloa wrote:I'm sorry, Fox, maybe its that I haven't seen Blade Runner in some time, but the only hat I remember is Almos' straw hat. Is there another hat I'm missing from BR?
Dave
They wanted Ford's Deckard to have a futuristic, but still "Film Noir" look right down to the fact that he'd be a fedora-wearin'/flat foot/Private Eye/Sam Spade type. But like John said, they went to work on this film as Raiders was wrapping and Ford wanted to do something different (hence no hat - but a haircut that was ahead of it's time).
STILL, it was the original plan and so I wanted to eventually get John to make me a version of a Deckard Fedora (the way I'M picturing it) to go with my Deckard Trench Coat... I even had the folks who made the coat send me an extra swatch of the coat's cloth so I'd be able to send it to John eventually and have him try to find a ribbon color that comes close to matching in color.
Once this little project is ready to go, it will be entirely a fabrication of my idea about what that would've looked like matched up with John's skills in bringing it to life (kinda' like your Wedding Hat).

I never knew that. I would have loved to see that hat on Ford's head, though. I can't wait to see what your Deckard hat will look like even if the Drinkin' With a Monkey hat pushes it back some.

Sounds like a fascinating project. You could design a happy medium between Olmos' hat and Walsh's hat. That would be an interesting combo. Plus a little color pulled from his tie for the ribbon (but not in the same check pattern) would cinch it all up.
Cheers!

Re: New Raiders Penman block updated pics 4/19/09
Thanks guys for the interest & comments on this... I didn't mean to take us too far off topic, though...
Sorry 'bout that, Oak!
Actually, as I was reading all of your comments about wanting to see some of the original specs and so on, I initially thought "Hmmm... maybe I should suggest that I'll start another thread about my desire to get this hat made one day as well as ask posting a shot of the concept hat, ask for suggestions, etc..." when I suddenly realized that NONE of that has anything to do with Indiana Jones... with the possible exception(s) of THAT topic and THIS thread BOTH involving:
- a character played by Actor Harrison Ford
- renowned Indy Style Hat Maker John Penman
and
- notorious Indy & Blade Runner Fan Fox Lidstone
...So, really - and in all fairness - I suppose this topic doesn't even belong here at C.O.W. "My bad" as the kids say... (ouch) ...but I think I will post just such a thread over at The FC and see what becomes of it.
(Hope that doesn't offend anyone's "sensibilindy's")
(At LAST... FINALLY got to use The Plymouth!)
(And just to be open and honest about this subject, even though the original design sketches for that hat exist doesn't mean I'm following them to the letter... I want a Blade Runner Style hat that I'LL wear with my Deckard Trench Coat... I think some of my ideas for this hat will suit my tastes... but maybe not everyone's (and I like DanielJone's ribbon idea... IT'S mighty tempting, too!)
...But I'd like to invite anyone who thinks they've got a better idea for the look of this hat to either - please - share it with me OR work together with an Artist like John to make it come true...
(If you've got a BETTER BR Hat in your head, get it made and show us!)
Thanks for your time, guys!
(And don't worry, even if you're NOT thinking of also becoming a Member over at The FC, I'll STILL try to "slip in" a BR Fedora shot one day in the future when I'm posting shots of one of my Indy lids!)

It's hard to tell that it's a Camptown honestly. I would have never guessed. Good job!
I like the photos you posted recently of your Penman Ulloa. It does indeed look like a rather soft hat. That is one quality I can't wait to be able to find out for myself when I receive mine. Based upon when I ordered, it truly could be any time now that my hat gets made.
