Just had to do it !
O.k form a line and let the insults commence. I had a bit of spare cash and ordered a DP. I don't expect it to be good. So long as I can wear it on a sunny day on the farm and still look a bit Indy'ish. So tell me.....Are they REALY that bad ?

Re: Just had to do it !
Fur felt or wool? The wool DP's are complete garbage, although the crushable might serve well enough as a "I don't care if it gets ruined" hat.
The Fur felt, while not great, is not as bad as it reputation would suggest.

Oh dear.......Wool . You're probably just jealous that I have a more SA hat than you
Re: Just had to do it !
I had a wool DP before I found this place. It would be fine for a work hat but I wouldn't suggest it for anything else.

They are worse
Seriously. I had a Fur Felt DP before I entered in COW, but even if I was not "enlightened" about the hundreds of intricacies concerning "the" hat, the difference beetween the movie fedora was VERY strong. Plus, the felt is horrible: cardboard stiff, heavy and thick. A waste of money.
My father bought, with the fur felt for me, a crushable wool. even more far away from SA, but he likes it.

Re: Just had to do it !
Minnesota Jones has an old felt DP which he managed to get some decent results from. While not the most SA, it was still a pretty decent hat for a hat. Curator Rick also wears a DP, and it actually looks good on him! It's a case where he made it his hat. The shape fits and compliments him. Regardless of the many opinions you'll come across regarding a DP, if you enjoy it for what it is, then that is all that truly matters.

Thanks everone. I think I know what to expect now. I know its what a real noob would buy but I wanted to get one out of curiosity as well as getting one for working. If it is realy REALY bad I can always serve peanuts out of it.

Re: Just had to do it !
I hate to say this but... I have a DP. I bought it last year in a mad rush for Halloween, since I put together an Indy costume fast in only a week. Its one of the fur felt ones, got it from Todds. I want to sell it considering I have a Penman on the way, and will not use it again, even if I didn't have one coming. Even when I opened it, I thought... What the heck is this? Super stiff, and a weird bash, with tear drop... thats not Indy! Anyone want it? haha
Re: Just had to do it !
I own one. It is in my old Akubra box in the basement. It is a costume hat, pure and simple. Can't get it wet, can't get it hot, can't get it dirty. Put aside the fact that it isn't even close to an Indy bash, the quality of the hat is terrible because the woll is too stiff. You'll hate your DP, but at least you won't feel bad when it is ruined!

Well said. Enjoy it for what it is.binkmeisterRick wrote:Minnesota Jones has an old felt DP which he managed to get some decent results from. If you want a SA Indy hat it isn't it (although to most people looking who don't know, it passes)
It's not a bad inexpensive hat in fur felt if you just want a 'kicking around' Fedora. I have one, paid less than $20 for it 'new' from someone who never wore it. The one I have doesn't match the description of being like cardboard I read here, although I've seen the wool ones that are very hard to the feel and very stiff.

Re: Just had to do it !
it depends on you and how you feel about the dp ---- i got mine last year--- i fixed the pinch the day i got it i wet the hat down a bit with a towel and started the pinch the way i wanted so it wasn't so wide and i think it came out fine ---- i sent away to todds to get a black band ribbon to put on it , i had it done by a hat maker so that i didnt mess it up and this is what it looks like --- i think i came out fine --- but for the price it was fine and it has held up thru storms and snow. a pretty decent hat if i may so myself--- just my two cents --- i hope you enjoy your hat

Re: Just had to do it !
Thanks Indyclone. I think that looks pretty good. I have only paid £20 for the hat and I only want it for work so at that price I thought it just made a change from a baseball cap. At the end of the day you get what you pay for and nothing more.

as a cheap but stylish workaday hat it served me well [after I re-bashed it: My Dad has it now and loves it, it's just like the one's he wore in the war.

That is a Stetson label in your hat. It should read "John B. Stetson Company, Authorized User" somewhere at the bottom.indyclone wrote:i would like to eventually get a nice fedora but this dp has served me well , i also have a hat from 1984 that i bought which my son whos 13 wears not sure who made them back then but its a nice hat too , my son loves it

when you do finally get your AB you will never look at another hat the same. The very cream of the crop.
