Magnoli bag.
Got my Magnoli bag today.I could not be more happy with how it is made.A real good job.But the colour seems a bit sandy to me.What colour would anyone say the screen used one is ? I was thinking of dying it with a small amount of drab olive clothes dye.

Re: Magnoli bag.
I know the feeling, having waited about five months to post some pics of my gear but I just signed up on photobucket and after a couple glitches it was not as hard as I suspected. I posted some pics of one of my hats. Give it a shot.
As for the bag, I too love my Magnoli, and it goes great with my Bison Brown strap and roller buckle from Wade Egan. Just have to take some pics of it now.
Thanks,
Frank

Re: Magnoli bag.
Well, picture issues aside, the real bags (including those used in the films) varied in color, but usually had at least a hint of olive drab to them. Some looked very tan, though. Enough so that many Indy fans didn't notice the bag was actually green for many may years.
I would say, dying is a matter of personal taste. If you want it greener, go for it. Personally, though, I've seen too many Magnoli bags destroyed in an attempt to make them greener. I would leave it be, and maybe try to find a real MKVII. Then sell off the Magnoli bag at a slight discount (since it will be used). I might even be inclined to buy it, if the price was right!

Re: Magnoli bag.
I went to JoAnn Fabrics and got myself some Dylon Dye of olive green coloring. These are the instructions Wade e-mailed to me
"1) Use fabric dye designed for canvas or cotton canvas duck only. Use two shades lighter than you think it will take when choosing dye.
2) Take the wet bag from the washer and expand from inside with your hands.
3) Add dye to appropriate amount of water in a bucket or steel sink.
4) Submerge the bag and stir around allowing all the fabric to soak up entirely.
5) Remove bag from dye after a couple of minutes and sponge off any remaining wetness with a rag or old towel.
6) Let dry in the sun for an hour.
7) Go to step #5 in the distressing process."
I personally only wet the bag in a sink first. After it was thoroughly soaked, I added salt per the instructions on the dye packaging, and dye to a metal sink. I let it soak completely and did stir it around a bit. I let it stay in for about 10 minutes? Perhaps longer. Wade suggested a couple, but after a couple, I did think it had not sufficiently darkened.
Anyway after that, I just let it dry in the sun, however, I also filled it with dry newspaper occasionally and replaced it whenever the newspaper became saturated with water. I think that helped speed it along. Worked out very nicely in my opinion. I think the bag is now the perfect mix of khaki/sand/olive green.

Re: Magnoli bag.
Well I soaked my Magnoli in some OD Dylon dye for around 30mins and... it didn't make the bag green at all. For some reason the bag just didn't take on any colour.
I followed Wade's method but it still looks exactly the same.
Anyone else have this problem?
**Edit**
Ok, so after it completely dried, I took it into the kitchen under some better light, and behold, it did take on the colour after all. The lights in my room tend to have a yellow tinge, so I couldn't really tell that much.
Here's some pics:

And seen here next to Olive Drab board shorts (As you can see, I am yet to own an Indy Jacket):

Hey clark.j.kent,
That looks good. It seems like a very good color. Maybe you're a lefty, though? Your bag's on the wrong side.
Your pose looks like Superman. Hey, clark.j.kent? Superman? clark.j.kent?

I like very much the new color! Now you can judge by your own taste if stop here or, as James Bond, "Dye another day"!

I'm a righty, I just prefer to wear my bag on the right side for some reason. I'll swap it over though when wearing it as part of the costume.Alkali Jones wrote:Hey clark.j.kent,

The colour looks almost the same as the bag in the Cairo Scenes, so i'm happy with how it turned out. Just need to distress it now.
BTW, I hate posing for photos, thus the goofy picture.

Re: Magnoli bag.
My thoughts exactly. At first I was sure they had just flipped the camera but then I thought, lets see where this is going and *Bam*, he is wearing it on the right side.
Perhaps it was easier when riding the horse for balance. Whip on one side, Bag on the other.

Re: Magnoli bag.
I don't know...I am leaning toward doing this but nervous about messing the bag up drastically. I don't want it to look like a bad tie die job. Re: Magnoli bag.
About how much did the dye cost? How much comes in one unit? I might have to do this with my original MkVII. The color really got washed out after I cleaned it when it first showed up. I'd like to return the color to it, since it looks a little white now.Flowah wrote:I went to JoAnn Fabrics and got myself some Dylon Dye of olive green coloring. Re: Magnoli bag.
Ordered my bag a little over 3 weeks ago. Any idea how long they take to arrive in the US (Florida)?
Re: Magnoli bag.
Got my bag last week and love it. Did remove the divider to make more room. I also dyed it as per instructions in this very post. The color turned out great. Keep in mind the dye is a powder and a little goes a long way.
