Wested Soft Goat

Post by Hatch »

Has anyone had good or bad experience ?.......Know Holt's looks Primo....has anyone else gotten one close to looking as good ?....I know on one thread someone was complaining of stiffness of 'soft goat'....Do you need to specify THIN skins and/or need to speak to Peter directly ?....would like to see pics of others......

Mine feels like plastic.
Not only that, I find the colour utterly flat and dull. I went to a leather shop in Italy and all the jackets looked better than mine. I bought a black veg-tanned lamb jacket instead.

moses, just to be clear do you have the soft goat or the washed goat, know the washed goat is dull as I have one.......but a soak and light Pecards treatment after drying for several days helped it a lot and I quite like it now......

There's no "soft goat"

Post by St. Dumas »

I'm pretty sure all of Wested's "authentic brown goat" is the same. No softer and no stiffer. Wested doesn't refer to part of its stock as "soft goat". I've worn Wested non-washed goat jackets manufactured in June 2008 and in March 2009 and they're indistinguishable in look and softness. And they're both "soft". Even Peter's stock of goatskin from three years ago, which was thicker than the current stock, was very soft.

In y'all's opinions, how does it compare to the lambskin? I've got a lambskin Wested from 2001 or so, and the thing is pretty beat up in several places. It's really not what I'd consider rugged. Easy to scratch, and the cuffs on the sleeves have worn down to a point where they even have a few tears in them running along where the cuff folds into the sleeve. While I love the drape and feel of lambskin, I'd be interested in getting something a bit more durable and I've heard Peter's goatskin is the way to go for that.

Thoughts?

SD ,Yeah ,I just went through their custom site and couldn't find soft goat just authentic and washed........Did find soft goat in special offer ROLA but not in custom......Holt do you know anything about their offering now.......obviously yours is VERY custom.........I've also had the authentic and found it to have a 'hard shell ' finish that takes a LOT of breaking in and I wouldn't describe as soft although very durable......

Hatch, I found that the current batch of goat and the 2006 batch of goat were what I'd call soft, but as you say, not easily distressable. I don't imagine the glossy finish wearing away very easily with even everyday wear. I can see most of that gloss lasting more than a decade.

There's a quote from Gemma on one of these threads about a month ago where she said all of Wested's non-washed goat is their regular authentic brown goat. The ROLA goat described on Wested's website as "soft goat" may be just a descriptive term or maybe a different stock being used where those jackets are being manufactured.

I talked to both peter and gemma about this.

they still have the old authentic goat and dark goat which is a thicker skin.if yuou want that you have to ask about it...

they now only use the new goat whcih is been given the name 'soft goat' due its suppleness and softness. it is shaved to a thinner skin and tanned in pretty much the same way the Lambskin is.

so.. soft goat is the new thing...

Im not sure how long they have been having that in stock. it might be a year?

Wested's site confuses me, too. I've been looking at the goats and can't make heads or tails of what exactly I'm looking for.

Ok, so the authentic goat is the new 'soft goat' .....has anyone requested the thin skins like Holt and what's been your experience/how do they drape.......lets see some pics....someone has got to give a Holt a run for his money or at least claim the silver medal.....( can't let 'The Viking ' get too big of a head) :whip:  ........

Is Authentic goat/soft goat still the seal brown color or is it darker? (Is it darker than the washed goat?)
