New Raiders Penman block updated pics 4/19/09

Post by BendingOak »

First let me start by saying forgive me Michaelson for going to the dark side. :anxious:

I decided to do something a little different for me. I first beat the snot out of it and added some fullers earth. It's a rabbit felt on my new Raiders block.

A couple more from a different angle.

I hope to have some pics of the first beaver body off of this block this weekend.

thanks for giving us multiple rotated angles, on your own head, in sunlight and for not posting images so close up that the hat looks distorted! It would be nice if more hat image posts followed a similar presentation.

Swell job! That looks great! To me a "real" Raiders hat looks like that. Dirty, beat up.

And the multiple angles/sunlight photos, yeah what Rex said!

Michaelson'll love it!! :Plymouth:

John, you nailed it! I'd say that that is as close as it gets. I don't know if it is the crease or what, but I'd say this is even closer than David's block (no offense, please, don't take offense). I'm glad I put in that order for a reblock when you first posted about the new blocks. Now I don't have to wait for my Raiders Penman to have your new block! Excellent work, my friend!

John my friend, Wonderful pics there! Whoever did you get to take those? ;)

Seriously though, it's really interesting to see how differently rabbit reacts to the same blockshape over beaver. I'm really digging the side profile with the rear bulging action (that kinda sounds dirty). Can't wait to see a finished beaver on the same block.

Thanks everyone for the really kind words.

I changed the block to have a better side view. I wanted that drop in the back. I think now my raiders hat has a looks much better from all the around the hat. The thing I like best is the rabbit felt is buckling in the back just by putting the center crease in.

Personally I love the look of it, judging from the pictures you posted. It doesn't look too blocky but very straight sided nonetheless. You also did an excellent distressing job.

I wouldn't mind seeing more pictures of it if you can (when there is a good hat on show you can never have enough of them!).
I'm also glad that more and more people are rediscovering the rabbit felt because that's the way to go for ultimate accuracy.

This now the block I'm using for all raiders orders. I have a complete set of these blocks.

I agree erri that rabbit would be more SA but I still like the beaver better.

You should be very concerned. Very  concerned

I will tell you this. It has nothing to do with a brown Raiders hat but I think you will be very happy I did this.

All Raiders hats new or re-block will be coming off these blocks. No matter the color unless requested to use the old block.

Oak, regarding the new colour, keep in mind that the Burma from Christy's is a close match but not perfect as I already stated in my infamous thread. If you PM me I'll send you more info of the film hat colour so you can match it with whoever dyes your rawbodies, if it's not too late for it.

Here's some pics I just took to show all the angles.

Front view showing straight sides and big humps on top.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0742.jpg

Non-bow sides showing deep center crease and side crease.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0741.jpg

Non-bow side showing no tapper front or back with the bottom of the back crease dropped.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0740.jpg

Back shot showing straight sides and and deep center crease.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0739.jpg

Bow side showing deep side and center crease.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0737.jpg

Bow side shot showing no front or back tapper and the drop back of the center crease. felt is buckling in the top back from the deep center crease or me beating the snot out of it. Either way something you want in a Raiders hat.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0738.jpg

Close up of the bow. Showing the flying V Or what I would call a Y on it's side.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/j ... G_0743.jpg

I can't wait to see a finish beaver hat coming off of this block. The test body was a beaver but I never finished the hat. Saw the finally look after pulling it off the block and creasing it. I sent the block right out to get a set made.

The new hats look good all around. However, I think the Rabbit felt looks better that the beaver on this block. It could just be a trick of the lighting, though. :-k

If I ever get another Raiders hat, I would go with this block. I definitely see the subtle differences.

They look awsome as always, but you can deffidentley tell the differance between the rabit and the beaver. I think it will just come down to personal prefrence. Thank you for doing one in the grey I was intrested to see how a grey one would turn out. You'll be getting my order for one like that when I get the money up. Great Job :D :D

Really nice hats John! You can see the difference in the felts too, but it could be lighting or the fullers earth on the rabbit hat. Either way, they are well done! That new block shape is excellent. Really looking forward to my Raiders hat!

WOW!!!

(Man! ...I am SO ashamed about how LATE I'm showing up for this party...)

Okay...
First, let me say that for the last week or so, life - for me - has gotten so busy that I've gotten into the unfortunate habit of visiting C.O.W. only when a notification of Reply shows up in my E-Mail Inbox.
(In other words, I've only been keeping up with the new posts on threads I'm ALREADY aware of... while I was remaining completely OBLIVIOUS regarding New Threads...)

(...Most importantly, regarding THIS thread...)

So, it was only this morning that I finally popped into the Fedora Forum "through the front door" and saw this thread...

John... I'm astounded!
I... I don't know what to say about that hat except to say that it looks to be about as PERFECT a Raiders Hat as I can imagine (not looking to debate that fact... just saying that for my tastes, that hat looks like IT!)
:notworthy:

Effective THIS MINUTE I am saving up for THAT hat!
=P~

I want the whole thing... the whole treatment!

I want you to "sit on it, slap it around a bit, scrunch it up in your hands" and finish it off with a little dusting of Fuller's, too!

That thing looks like ADVENTURE Personified, John.
:whip:
Well done on raising your bar (again) and showing us that for a "new guy" to the trade, you are waaay out in front!

By the way, those photos were so nice and clear (and well lit) that for a minute there I had to look around 'cuz I thought I'd lost track of my wife!
;)

Congrats, John!
