How do you go about getting the taper in the 8 plait belly? Do you use some kind of bolster, or is the taper just from dropping strands around a non-tapered core?

Its all in the cable core and dropping strands in the belly. For example, Nylon 12 plait 8ft Indy... Start with an 8 inch, 8mm steel rod ground down the last inch and an 8 mm cable. For the first 12 inches of the cable leave as is, then for the next 12 inches cut the outer covering at a long taper. This will leave you with 3 inner wires. cut all the wires at 4 ft including the handle. Then cut 2 wires back at equal proportions between the 4ft mark and the end of the tapered cover. All ready for the 8 plait belly. You take that out to the 6ft mark dropping your first 2 strands at the end of the shortest wire. Then drop the next 2 strands when they get crowded leaving you with 4 strands to finish. All ready for the 12 plait overlay. Hope that answered your question lol.
