So I posted in the "Too Big - Too Bad" topic below the woes of having a tiny head and what I should do about my too-big Akubra. So I got to thinking about a custom and what it would take to make the hat look "right" for my tiny noggin. I had the idea of going into photoshop - taking a picture of me with my hat on and one of Indy - taking out different segments and matching them up to see mathematically what looks right on my head.
Heres what I did:
First I took a pic to Match the one of Harrison's below - I used the hat as a constant matching up our hats (even though they are angled slightly different) the matched up pretty well - But as you can see Harrison looks right and I look like an idiot.
Then I took the pic of my face and laid it over top of Indy's. Our faces matched when mine was made 8% larger.
So then I took the pic of my face and laid it under an untouched version of my hat (technially an 8% decrease for my hat) and well - these are the results.
So let me know what you think!
Is 8% really the slight difference it takes to make me mug look right?

Basicaly yes. I doubt that it will be this mathematical and that the 8% is totaly acurate, but this picture comparisson does show that with a little less crown and a little less brim that hat would look better on you. Maybe you should have it reblocked to have it match your features better as I think that that might just work perfectly.

CAUTION: SCIENCE AND MATH CONTENT!!!!!
So according to your theory you should be able to adjust all of the dimensions of the hat to -.08 and this should make the hat proportions correct. So if a traditional Raiders hat is 5.25-5.5 inches, your correct dimensions [5.25-(5.25X.08), 5.5-(5.5X.08)] would be somewhere between 4.8 and 5.1 inches. The same proportional calculations could be applied to...say brim dimensions and everything else. I say that sounds about right. Good luck with that. Oh, by the way, good luck finding Raiders accurate ribbon in 1.15 inches!

What I would do is send a custom hatter the unaltered photo and include the dimensions of the hat. A good hatter will know how much to take off the crown and the brim and will have you looking just as good as Ford.

Yeah, I would take your problem directly to a hatter....or try a serious dose of botox.

Re: The Proportions of Indy
If I may Mooniteman, and I am not speaking as a hat maker. This is from my experience with my own Akubras. The effect of the Akubra you are seeing is due to the crown on the Akubra. Its block tends to make the bashing of the hat hit high on the crown. With you having a thin face, the crown causes it to ephasis that on you. The other thing is since you have not turned the hat, all attention is drawn to the center of your face causing the center long axis of your face to be accented. Notice how that is diminished by using your face inserted on the Indy hat. The pic where you have your head imposed on Indy's, actually gives your Akubra more of a Temple of Doom look (but better IMHO).
Also, I think your original pic is a bit distorted since you were centered on your face. Perspective is skewed so to speak.
This deal with the crown of the Akubra is what always frustrated me. I think it is simply due to the crown having too much dome to it. This was my experience.
You've got a good looking Akubra there, though. It is not the hat's fault. It is the look you are looking for that the Akubra can't match. Putting the turn to the hat, if you would like to try it, could ease some of the trouble.

Just eat exclusively at McDonald's. You'll have 8% more face in no time.
