Long Term Fedora Storage Advice?
Hi all,
I'm planning on keeping an AB fedora I will be buying as a display piece under long-term/indefinite storage, and I was wondering if you experts out there had any advice?
I'm mainly considering buying some kind of a display glass-box to keep it in, but currently am unable to find anything close to that to keep it in. Any advice here too would be greatly appreciated! If all else fails though, I might end up keeping it in the box it came in in an empty spot on my closet, and probably will pull it out years and years from now just to admire before reshelving it.
My main concern is that if I find some kind of glass box to keep it in, would it be safe to keep it in an air-tight/reasonably air-tight environment? Would it be safe to store the fedora crown-up, possibly with either a circular cut-out underneath, or resting on a box small enough so that the brim doesn't rest on the edges? And would it be safe to just leave it as if without touching it, or should I pop it out every month or so and apply Pecards to the sweatband? Enquiring minds must know!

This sounds like a question for Curator Rick.
Drop him a PM and ask for his professional advice.

I've been thinking about doing such a thing as well and would be interested in hearing what you find out Castor.

I'm curious as well....I have my on one of those little hat stands that look like an opened up french fries basket (bad description I know but if you saw it you'd say the same). What are Pecards and why are they used?
This looks something like my hat stand only it's much taller and is an actual hat stand....will post pics of stand if curious.

Castor, if your talking about Steve's special CS run, my best suggestion would be to keep it in the hatbox, stored in a cool area away from direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold. Luckily, I have my father's Liberty Safe to put my hat in!

Re: Long Term Fedora Storage Advice?
Thanks Michaelson, I've shot a reply to Rick and anxiously await his reply!
ReturningSon, that is exactly what I was talking about! I've been keeping my two other AB's stored in their hatboxes (or should I say their shipping boxes), tucked away in the deep recesses of my closet! However, with these two upcoming fedoras, I'm really thinking about getting them stored in a more *safer* spot, as I'm not too sure about just how safe keeping a fedora (with a leather band, no less!) stored in a dark box will be in the long run.
Not to mention that with hats like those, I want them framed and sitting in a corner so I can just stare and drool at them all day! Well, since I'm getting two, I suppose I could always store one in the closet, and keep one 'framed'...
Indycrazy5187, I think I know what you're talking about, but I would love to see pictures if you have any! If I do end up with a box frame for my fedora, I might end up getting something similar to yours to keep the hat on top of!
At first though, I must admit that I was considering using the fedora to crown an Indy mannequin, but the more I think about it, the less I like the idea... It would be pretty much open to the elements as well as critters, and I'm not exactly crazy about having a hat sitting on a fiberglass head (ouch!). Would be too risky for so rare and so special a fedora!
Anyway, if I find anything more out, I'll keep the rest of you posted!

You could wear one ot two and have to worry about storing only two as apposed to four. Or, if you'd like, you can send one to me and I'll hold onto it for you.

Re: Long Term Fedora Storage Advice?
Here's a related question...
If I were to store it over an extended period of time crown-up, do you guys think something like this would be bad for the fedora in the long-run?
I'm leaning towards getting something along these lines if I do end up storing the fedora in a display case, and having a hat stand "hand forged" in Jackson Hole, Wyoming doesn't hurt, either! However, I'm just woried that since the center-crease of the fedora is what will be resting on the 'horse shoe', over time the hat-stand might end up permenantly creasing the crease, if that makes any sense!
...Which is something I especially want to avoid, considering that the fedora in question is AB's special-run of CS-liner fedoras, and I plan on keeping this one permenantly on display!

http://jhhatco.com/jh.nsf/product2!open ... ETWISTRACKHand forged in cowboy country, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, using three real horseshoes worn by some of our hardworking Wyoming saddle horses. Rests on tabletop.

Todd sells the plastic french fry basket rests. Keeps a hat from resting on a shelf. Purdy cheap, too.
