How many Wested Jackets have you owned?

Post by Bilbe »

I've been reading the posts for a few months now, and it seems to me that many people here have owned more than one Wested jacket. In part, it seems to me, to find the perfect fit. I know that has occupied my mind for a while now.

Anyway, I have a couple questions:
1) how many Wested jackets have you owned? and do you own now? (you can mention other makers)
2) if it took a while to find a good fit, do you think would it have been cheaper/taken less time/been more fun to hop on a plane, checked out London for a weekend, and stopped in at Wested?

I'm just curious.

--Bill B.

BTW, I guess I should confess that I own only one. It's a veg-tanned LC I bought from Tibor. Not SA at all. The only other piece of gear I currently own is Coyle's boots. I am working on it.

I have two Westeds and a G&B

2) if it took a while to find a good fit, do you think would it have been cheaper/taken less time/been more fun to hop on a plane, checked out London for a weekend, and stopped in at Wested?

Hahaha, good question, I hear flights to London are really cheap right now

I had a total of 7 Westeds. I gave my first Wested to my father. He wears it very often.
Most of the jackets came in and went out very soon. Because I never was even 50% satisfied with them. Then I lost 40 pounds and I had to sell what was left of them ;)
Now I own two TOD Westeds. Both same size just different leathers. Washed Goat and Auth. Lambskin. They about 90% fine.
I will keep one Wested for sure. It's good having atleast one Wested. I'm now a 100% TN fanboy :D Owning now three jackets with a fourth coming up very soon!

For the best fit you'll have to give your precise measurements, but from now on I'd also state the precise back length you want.

Normally we would lock a duplicate thread, but this one is vendor specific, where the link above is not, so we'll leave this one open.

That said, please keep replies to Wested ownership only , if you don't mind. ;)

Wow, I didn't run into this post in my COW lucubrations (sorry, I love this word). Thanks.

It looks like _ wins with 43! He could have paid for many pilgrimages to Wested.

I just came into my second, but I may not keep it. I'm giving it a little time to see if it fits better with different clothes.

I'm working on the first. I asked for a 44L ROLA but with full cut and not 80s. We'll see how many it takes to get it right. And stupid me ordered the optional name tag inside. Should I tell Peter/Gemma to drop it in case I need to sell it?
I'm a little skeptical getting the 80s for the following reasons:

1. People seem to complain about a tight arm/shoulder fit when Peter says there is none. He says the 80s cut is smaller in stomach and tapered in that area. I'm slim but have been working out. I'd like to have the jacket for a while.
2. A slimmer cut is SA however that is more of a European style than an American one. Us Americans tend to wear stuff on the comfy, baggier side and not skin tight. I've seen some jeans you Europeans wear and I'm surprised some of you were able to have children. ;)

I have had 3 Westeds.

The first one was a 44L Raiders in authentic brown lambskin... it was WAY too big so I returned it in exchange for a 42L Raiders Washed Goatskin, which I still have. And I just bought another Raiders in a 42 in lambskin.

So I have had 3, but now have 2. And I am looking to order another one, a custom soft goatskin in a 42L.

Right now I have two, both are Raiders jackets. One is an 80's fit in a 40, that ended up being a little bit tight, so I went with a standard cut 40, and IMO I really like the standard cut better, I can actually put a sweatshirt underneath during the cold months and wear my jacket sometimes. I am thinking of getting an LC wested, but I am really tight on money right now, nothing like paying off student loans.

I bought and sold a ROLA Lamb. I didn't like the look on me, maybe I need goat? It felt TOO soft as in I felt sissy in it.

I've had a washed lamb, OTR LC in washed goat, ROLA in authentic lamb, custom Raiders in HH, and a ToD in washed goat.

I've sold all of them as there always seemed to be something else around the bend. I've begun to settle down now and am happy with the jackets I have. I'll probably get another Wested eventually but I'm not sure what style.

OK, decided. One current ROLA, one soon-to-be-ex ToD (now boarding the Cairo Bazar).

1.) One lambskin ROLA size 48
2.) Custom tailored Lambskin size 50
3.) Horsehide size 50 ROLA (For me, the definitive Indy jacket, this one I still own and wear each day)
4.) TOD Wested size 50
5.) Wested ROLA Washed Goat

I own a ROTLA in Washed Goat and sell a CS one in Novapelle.

I keep the ROTLA because it is from the original maker but even with taking the custom route, I always found some part of the jackets that don't fit me so I wasn't 100% confortable with them.

I realize I should have thought this through a little more. I was kind of hoping for a comparison, and so should have provided a model. Here is what I (in hindsight) was imagining:

total cost spent on Wested jackets
- total cost of Wested jackets you still own
--------------------------------------
travel expenses to Wested?

My total outlay is currently only $100 for a used Wested veg-tanned LC, so here is what mine looks like:

$100
- $500 ($200 wkend special from Boston to London + overnight, car rental & food)
----------
-$400 (money have not yet spent on Westeds)

Or turned the other way around. If I think I'm going to have to buy and sell 2 or 3 Westeds before I find the perfect jacket, wouldn't it make more sense to go to London ($500), drive to Wested, and buy a jacket ($300). I think that's what I'm asking.

Good point, Bill. It's like golf. A lot of people spend an awful lot on new snazzy golf equipment, where what they really should do is get some average clubs and spend the savings on lessons.

I've had 4 Westeds spanning 15 years or so. I've kept one of my first ones in Dark Brown - a custom. I often wonder if it would just make more sense to pack a bag and go to England, or California, or wherever the item is being made, and get it totally worked out the way you want it. Whenever I've heard of someone being measured up by Peter, they have great success and seem very satisfied with the custom work.

I honestly think all the custom work has blurred the pattern at Wested to the point you almost don't know what you'll get. I think it's great that they offer relatively affordable custom work, but somewhere they needed to keep a template for what their standard specs were. Maybe they have and it's just the off-the-rack stuff that's been confusing the issue. (Or maybe I'm just confused) Because of that, short of a laundry list of specs, in-person sizing looks like the ultimate way to go.

Maybe a chartered "COW" flight to England with overheads full of Adventurebilts and Herbert Johnsons, and non-stop leather squeaking. We could line up at Wested like draftees in the army and get measured up.

Hi Tibor!

I still love my veg-tanned, BTW. It's breaking in very nicely.

I love this idea. What do you the chances of getting a Boeing 314 Clipper/Short Solent Mark III flying boat for the trip?

I'd be up for it.
