Hi All,
I decided to make my own whip holder after so many years of just thinking about it. I wanted to make it durable and able to hold the whip tight when trekking. I had some scraps of leather laying around from other projects so I just made a quick holder. My previous holder was a NH belt that had the holder built in. It just was too loose to hold my whip when walking. I had seen other holders with the velcro idea. I took that a step further and added two snaps to Really make sure it wasn't coming unsnapped when I didn't need it to.
On the first attempt I used adhesive velcro and I thought that was a pretty slick idea...until the next morning it had peeled off from the leather. So these first photos are from the adhesive velcro attempt. Keep in mind I still haven't stained the leather so it's just the natural hide color.

So my next attempt was sewing on strips of velcro. I did this with a regular ol leather awl. It's probably not the easiest way but I knew it would be sturdy.

So the second version is holding up nicely. The adhesive velcro made it stiff where as the sewn one allows there to be much more flexibility. The two snaps hold it tight and still snap off easy enough for use. I still have to stain the leather, but that's about it. Now I don't have to worry about my whip sliding around or falling out of my holder. Just need to go on some adventures to see how it'll hold up...pun intended.
Let me know what ya'll think!

Looks pretty good!
It's really neat to see stuff like that. With the emerging hatters, the member here posting under "Man-hat-tan", and the various other runs of homemade/cottage industry goods, it's almost like a "retro-renaissance", if there could be such a thing. I'm fairly new to the board, so since I've come on board, most of us are able to get very detailed, fairly quality items with very little leg work or elbow grease invovled. We're able to rest on the laurels of the Indyfan forebearers and nitpick about the most minute details ( if we're so inclined ). Heck, we even have the makers of the original gear of the new movie either in-house or well connected to the membership. It's really cool, to me, to see people getting back to the basics and saying, "Yeah, I could drop twenty bones for ( insert item here ), but where's the fun in that?"
I started off with a homemade bag conversion, gunbelt rig, and a few other nick-nacks, but I've since "upgraded". Now I order things and, while I'm waiting, there's a sense of excitement and anticipation. When it arrives though, it's exactly what I was expecting ( usually ), and it goes in the "keeper" pile. Fun? Yeah, but gone is the real fun of making things and hunting up that little piece of something-or-other to complete your creation, etc...
So, uhhhh...where was I? Oh yeah - Well done!

Re: Homemade Whip Holder
Thanks Kiltie! I think I may try making a whip holder with the quick release turn clasp sometime. Doesn't hurt to have a backup and i can always improve on the design. Not only do I really enjoy working with leather goods but so does my fiance. It may be a bit ambitious, but eventually I think we may try our hand at making whips. Maybe not starting up a business or anything, but just for the fun of it and to see if we can do it. It would be a blast and also something we can enjoy together.

Nice job!! Does it hold it pretty tight or does it slip? A slipping whip holder is a pain!

Re: Homemade Whip Holder
It does okay at holding it. I made another one this weekend with a turn clasp that looks nicer. I still think it needs maybe a coil holder as well to keep it from sliding in the holder. I'll post pics as soon as I can of the other one I made.

Re: Homemade Whip Holder
Ok, so I said I got that other one made. It's about time I post some pics. I made this one out of some scrap leather I bought at the local leather shop. I love that place...ah, the smell of leather...anyway, I don't really know what type of leather it is. It was strong but more flexible than the cow hide I used before. It was also a lot easier to sew.

I thought it looked better framed by the whip. Which for those who are wondering is a Joe Strain 8' in saddletan.
Let me know what you guys think of this upgrade. It looks a lot better than the first one if you ask me.

Re: Homemade Whip Holder
Very cool. If you're not looking for a superfast draw, I'm sure it's much more secure than a snap. It also has a MUCH more elegant look about it. Almost like a whipholder "prototype" or something old-timey. If you could tone down the visibility of the stitches somehow, I think that one would actually be a lot cooler than the SA snap version. Good thinking and nice job!

Re: Homemade Whip Holder
Thanks Kiltie. I would really like to do without the stiches showing on the front at least, but haven't formed a plan as to how to do so yet. The adhesive velcro was terrible so that's out.kiltie wrote:Very cool. If you're not looking for a superfast draw, I'm sure it's much more secure than a snap.
