HJ = Christy?
So. I suppose this has been covered several times, but anyway...I read somewhere that the Adventurer and the Poet are the very same hat, just sold under different labels.
I was wondering if this is a certificate and confirmed thing or just a theory.

Well, the number one hatter and hat expert when it comes to Herbert Johnson felt as it relates to the Poet or the Indy hat in general (as far as I know) would be our very own Fedora.
He has actual hands on experience with both hats and has said definitively that they are, in fact, one and the same.
-Good enough for me!
This is on page 6 of the "Christys' Adventurer Reborn" thread. It is a quote from Fedora:
However, it was stated elsewhere in a thread that was, unfortunately, deleted that they were infact the same hat, by Fedora, as I recall. I don't know how much difference it would make, in terms of the same block being used, felt supplier, etc... But it was also stated a while back that Christys' came under ther Dorfman Pacific umbrella. Perhaps that is why it is considerably less expensive than the HJ - the volume of other hats sold under that flag. In any event, like a goodly portion of the things stated on this site, it seems to be a matter of speculation, though it could be solved by something as simple as writing Christys'. Like Brooks Brothers and other up-scale clothiers, the Christys' stuff is sold - "Christys' such-and-such hat, by Biltmore" ( a vintage I have ), or, in this case, "Christys', by Dorfman Pacific..." Brooks Brothers used to do a "Brooks Brothers, by Herbert Johnson".Now, this felt is very similiar to the HJs I have in the shop, yet to be reblocked, but it seems also to be a bit more substantial than what is on the HJs. This may add to the longevity of this Christy. I also noticed, that this felt will bulge just like the felt in Raiders!!! Of course, the HJs do as well, but the felt on this Christy seems, as I said, to be a little more substantial, i.e. thicker. That certainly can't hurt.
Dorfman Pacific? Wow. I just learned something new! DP is a company that does not make hats!!! They have various factories make hats and are sold under their name, like the Official Indy Fedora.
The Christy and the HJ are made by the same factory in Europe, that is a fact. And this factory makes its own rabbit felt as well. So, the similiarity in felts makes good sense. I have not weighed each respective hat, so I dunno if the Christy is actually heavier, or if I am just seeing a variation in runs of felt. Variations are common. Fedora

I beg pardon -
I did not mean to say that DP made the hat, simply that Christys' fell under their umbrella. Naturally the Adventurers, etc... don't have "Christys' by DP..." nor any other purveyor. I just meant to say they're likely not made by Christys', but whomever is contracting under that ( massive ) umbrella. I'll look to see if I can find the pick that was posted earlier that shows Christys' under the DP logo.
I remembred another, by the way: DP provided the pith helmets for Banana Republic years ago, too.
If you disagree, or simply know a fact that disproves another post, at least make an attempt to be decent and call it to our attention in a manner becoming your age and stature. It's disappointing...

Is it just in your nature to attempt to discredit and/or ridicule anyone and anything that is not on the same plane as you. In the last thirty day span, I've seen you write implying the unparalleled nature of your artistry, the fact that you can see things that no one else can see, and that if no one else can see them, THEY'RE the ones who are wrong. Can you even attempt to be civil? I have NEVER said anything provocative toward you in a personal manner, and this is the SECOND time you've not had the good graces to be tactful towards my posting. Quite regrettable coming from someone held in such high regard.I just learned something new! DP is a company that does not make hats!!! Here we go... Can somebody chime in and find out if this is where the HJs are made, too?**
Chech out the link:

I can't tell by reading if this is exclusively a Christys' factory, of a producer of more than one line.***

...more reading on the Christys' factory. A sad parallel of the American factories. I wonder why Christys' had other hat makers produce under their label even when they had a factory, unless it was like the Akubra/Stetson setup where a regional manufacturer produced the hats in the country where they'd be sold ( which would, I guess, explain Biltmore making Canadian sold Christys'...).
Well, at least under the current flag they've produced the perfect Indiana Jones hat.
I'M KIDDING!!! Settle down.

Discredit? Ridicule? How did you get that out of what I posted? It is not there. I already knew that DP does not make hats. I just was not aware that Christy fell under their umbrella, so that was the extent of my remark. How is this a discredit or ridicule? Sorry you took it that way. Look, I think I know a bit more about hats. I think any hatter does. Now, I don't know anything about the jackets and other stuff, and you never hear me say much of anything in those regards. I know little about many things, and I don't venture into these avenues. But, in the areas of my expertise, I do make statements. What is wrong with that? And, the things you speak of that I see and others can't, well, I am not the only one that sees them. I am not alone. I think it is a fact that some folks don't see certain aspects, of hats, of cars, you name it. And for the ones that do, is this somehow wrong? Is it wrong to know more about a certain subject than others? I sure hope not!!! My Doc knows more about medicine than I do, and yet, I don't blast the guy for doing so!! It would be rather stupid of me to do so. If you want me to shut up, forget about it. It ain't gonna happen. I am as objective as anyone can be, in what I talk about. It is based upon experience, and I think I have more than many folks. To cast me as not being civil is off base. I challenge anyone to point out where I was not civil in my remarks above. Is it just in your nature to attempt to discredit and/or ridicule anyone and anything that is not on the same plane as you. I am interested in the hatting business, in all aspects. Not that I really need to be, but it just happens. I am more interested in how it was run decades ago, than today.
Nope, not there. The thing is, at some point in time Christy probably actually made their own hats, just like HJ and Locke, and Stetson. When hats fell out of fashion, these companies either licensed out their name(Stetson) or they just outsourced their hats from other factories. (Christy, Locke, HJ) At one point in time, HJs were sold throughout the world, with the retailer putting their names on the hats. They still had the HJ or Christy name on them, but also the retailor. Stetson used to do the same thing when Stetson was really Stetson. From what I know the Christys' HJ and Locke's are made in Portugal. Christys' is a very known brand of hats world wide. Lots of famous people wear christys'.
The sad thing about all of this is once the names were sold, or the hats were outsourced, the quality really took a big plunge. This happened to the UK hatters as well as American hatters. There is no comparison between a real Stetson and a Hatco Stetson, and likewise no comparison between a real HJ and a new one. Different animals. Now, a few might say old Fedora is dissing these guys. But, it is not my intent to do so, I am just stating verifiable facts. If you don't like the news, don't shoot the messenger!! Being a hat guy, and owning a collection of vintage hats, it is disheartening to see just how low hats have sunk in the quality department. But, I feel the same way about most consumer goods available today. Back in the old days, hats were expensive items to buy and own. But, back then, you at least got a high quality item for the buck. The economics of the hat business has changed. They no longer make hats in factories with the quality in mind. They make them as cheap and as fast as they can. They have to!! No demand equals a low quality product. And that is where the hat business in general has moved. Now, in the western hat market, this is not the case today. When the quality sunk in western hats, you had many small hatters enter into the market, and they are currently putting a hurting on Hatco, who sells the Stetson and Resistol brands. These small hatters make and sell very high quality western hats, and it is a HUGE business when compared to the dress hat market. Most hats that are sold, are western hats. In fact, the small custom hat operations were saved by the western hatters. The craft was kept alive and is flourishing as we speak. All of this sort of stuff interests me.
I think I was the first guy that started handmaking Indy fedoras, making them high quality hats. But prior to this, I had spent right at 7500 bucks on Indy fedoras, and found them to be lacking, either in the quality department, or in the blocks used. Somehow I don't think any of my detractors spent that much searching for a great Indy fedora. And none of them ever actually took up hatting in order to satisfy their needs. Yet, they tend to take pot shots at me. I don't get it. I guess I am an easy target. As a vendor, I still post like just a fan. I never got into this deal with an intention of making the last film hats, or to make money from this. Far from it. I started off simply because I was not satisfied with the offerings of that day. I gave many, many free reblocks using my reverse engineered block, if you wore my hat size. Who else has done this? If you look back at my record, it stands on its own. I don't need to apolgize for any of it! Many of the new folks just don't know my record. My quest, my journey. But, it is all here on COW, every single bit of it. Fedora
I read this on the link provided in a post above.Dorfman Pacific has extended their arrangement with British hatter Christys. The Christys’ hats and caps include: deerstalkers, trilbys, rexes, a bowler, English Ivys and 8/4s in fur felt and check wools. The fur felt hats will continue to be manufactured in the UK.
This is misinformation. These hats are not made in the U.K. Now, there is a reason for this misinformation. The factory that actually makes these hats, as well as even the Stetson brand is located somewhere else, but they do not want this to be public knowledge. This one factory, makes almost every hat sold in Europe. The high end hats and the low end ones as well. And it is not located in the U.K. This is top secret stuff by the way, and I don't understand the whys of it.The fur felt hats will continue to be manufactured in the UK.
There were as of two years ago, only 8 feltmakers left in the entire world. None are in the UK. There were 9 but the South Africa maker went belly up, and this is where Milano used to buy their felts from, along with Barons and some other small hatters. Milano changed over to Portugal felt, Marc's supplier. You get this information only if you are in the hat business, as most folks don't have a clue. Marc became friends with a major equipment supplier for the hat industry. This guy knows where the felt maker are, and also where the great fur mixers are located. Heck, this guy works with them all the time. One of the best mixers is actually with Tonak, and his skills are being wasted there, as Tonak only makes rabbit bodies. Portugal also has one of the really artistic mixers, and it is an art indeed to mix furs. They will do a mix, and then run a body to see how well the mix works. If it works well, they go with it. If not, they go back to the mixin board, so to speak. Fedora
Alrighty, Fedora.Dorfman Pacific? Wow. I just learned something new! DP is a company that does not make hats!!! They have various factories make hats and are sold under their name, like the Official Indy Fedora.
I suppose it was the structure of the statement or the lack of inflection; the dirty nature of the internet. I read the above as your meaning Christys' were not made by DP "in house". It came off the way I've seen several posts ( and not necessarily yours) recently that take on a condescending nature, rather than imparting knowledge, thus aiding fellow members. I guess the nature of several similar threads has led me and maybe a few others to automatically come in with hackles up.
You're clearly genuine in your subsequent post, so I apologize for my popping off.
For the record, I'm impressed with your skills and knowledge. Because of that, and because of the ascendancy of both being so transparent on these boards ( from your days as "one of the boys" to producer of the Indy 4 hat ), I just hate to see any hint of anything less than the consumate "good guy". I also realize it's not a right of mine to impose that expectation, as I don't even know you. Naturally I am anxious to hear any and everything that can further my knowledge of hats in general from you or anyone else. You happen to have a deeper well than most, and I appreciate that.
It's a royal pain in the patootie to wade through all the speculation stated as fact, the real facts, and the plain baloney. I try to ensure that my posts are always prefaced with "I think..." or "I believe...", and if I have facts, to try to cite them.
In this particular case, to simply state that Christys' and HJ are made in the same factory, "and that's a fact" - then leave it at that . Well I've got one source telling me one thing, and you telling me to take your word for it on the other hand. I'm not reactively disinclined to take you ( or anyone else ) at their word, but now I've got opposing information. I'd hate to walk into this same mess again misinformed, somewhere down the road. I just want the facts, truth, etc...presented to me in a way that is not condescending, but genuine, and useful. Friendly.
Again, I want to make it plain and clear that I apologize sincerely if I misread your statement, as I like to think my remarks previously posted are reserved for real grievences, and not simply because I'm confrontational or have some beef with your outlook in particular. Your knowledge is valued and that is why I WOULD have taken that particular stance.

Gentlemen, please. What we have here is a communication failure.
Kiltie, I personally didn't see offense or arrogance in Fedora's words. If he may seem presumtuous, sometimes, I'm sure it's Internet's fault - you don't hear the tone of voice, don't see the face of the speaker, and many informations that should be passed through body language are lost.
In add to this, I don't know him personally but from what I've heard about and from him made me understand he is a simple guy (this intended in a positive way). He is a person, as far as I can know, who doesn't like circumlocutions and always speaks his mind in a frank way: and his plain speaking can be mistaken, on internet, as arrogance.
So, gentlemen, please settle down. No need to get angry or argue. Peace!
(Fedora, this will cost you a lifetime furniture of your ABs, ya know... ).

First off, I of course accept your apology, and I want to apologize to anyone whom I have offended. If I did offend, it was not an intentional thing, as I don't do that. I just write at times in the heat of the moment, and this can be taken wrongly, or in a way that I never intended it to be taken. That's the weakness of posting, as the emotions don't come through clearly all of the time.. Well I've got one source telling me one thing, and you telling me to take your word for it on the other hand. I'm not reactively disinclined to take you ( or anyone else ) at their word, but now I've got opposing information. I'd hate to walk into this same mess again misinformed, somewhere down the road. The information that I have posted is indeed factual, and comes from talking to those folks involved in feltmaking. Look, the hatting world really is a very small place, and info about it is held close to the vest by those same people. You never get the whole story from anecdotal accounts, or even from them, if you are not involved the the hat business. That is just the way that it is. Now, many times I will know something, and have been asked by others to not make info known, or at least give the source, as it could get someone into trouble. But, I never post anything about the hat business that is not true and factual. I may just not tell the whole story, as I gave my word that I would not do so. So, I have to walk a fine line most times. The hat factory that makes the HJs and Christies is one and the same, and I know this to be true, but I cannot say HOW I know. A word was given in regards to this. I wish I could. I don't understand the reasons, but there apparently must be good ones, and I don't question it.
For some reason, the hat trade is secretive, not only in the techniques used, but the business part of it as well. Why would it matter if the same company made both Christys and HJs? Apparently it does matter, to the factory that makes the both of them. I have not stated exactly where this factory is, and can't do so. I was asked NOT TO. And I won't. But, I do have intimate knowledge of them, and know things that I will never be able to say, publically. Fedora

It sounds like the politics of business to me. Sometime practices don't make sense, but there are things done behind the scenes to keep certain people and their egos happy. And even when these picky people move on, certain practices can end up staying in place, keeping a business legacy intact that didn't need to start to begin with.

Okay,
I hope this is still technically on topic ( like everything so far has been ), but -
Knowing that the HJs and the Christys' are made in the same place would account for strikingly similar construction and materials. One could also assume that any other brands made in the same factory would be of the same quality. HOWEVER, with the actual suppliers of raw materials, ie felt, being in such short supply, would it be possible for any of the up and coming hatters to get their felt from this supplier? Maybe do the old Mag/HJ trick, but this time litterally from the ground up, seeing as this felt has such a currently popular status.
Barring that, is there another company sourcing the same felt but making a better hat? Even if it were't an outdoor hat in spirit, it might make for a good conversion.
Incidentally, the sweatbands on both the above hats say "Made in the UK..." or "England" ( I don't have mine right next to me ). Are they at least assembled there, a la "American" cars made in Mexico, Japanese cars "Made in America", etc...?

The factory that makes the Hjs and Christys make their own rabbit felt. This particular felt is used for these two brands, but this factory also makes other rabbit felts, higher quality ones. This is the cheapo felt, used for economy priced hats. Although the HJ is not economy priced, due to their name and tradtion, and the fact that the same company name(as opposed to the same company) made the first 3 film hats for Indy.Knowing that the HJs and the Christys' are made in the same place would account for strikingly similar construction and materials. I don't know if this factory will sell their bodies to other hatters. Probably would if you could speak the language, but I am not sure one way or the other.
The hats are NOT assembled in the U.K. When I asked HJ if they would send me the hats in pieces, all they did was to cut out the sweats and liners, leaving the ribbon on the hat. So, they get them in from this factory, and ship out, and don't put them together. But, they can take em' apart!
Regarding the felt made by this factory, what I have seen is less robust than what the Raiders felt looks like to me. I think the Raiders felt was a little thicker than the HJ felt, but I don't believe any stiffener was used in the film hats. But the film hats were more robust when compared to the HJs I get in today. This HJ felt without stiffener is like the Optimos of years past, where a falling leaf would put a dent in the hat. If this felt had been used in the film, we would never get a good shot of the hat without extra dents in it. It would have been a costumer designers nightmare, IMO. Fedora
Re: HJ = Christy?
Hi everyone!
I thought others might also be interested in a direct photographic comparison of the HJ's and the Christys' (if not posted before). As you will see, felt, sweatband, ribbon and dimensions are the same, only different logos and linings.
I also measured both hats, the brim sizes are slightly different, but I guess one or two mm are normal variations when the brims get their cut.
HJ:
left brim 7,0cm
right brim 6,7cm
front brim 7,9cm
back brim 7,9cm
crown height 15cm
weight 126g
Christys
left brim 7,0cm
right brim 6,7cm
front brim 7,8cm
back brim 8,1cm
crown height 15cm
weight 129g (must be the plastic in the lining)
If anyone wants more pictures in a higher resolution or other rinfos, please let me know.

Re: HJ = Christy?
When the felt is sent to the guys over at christy's it
is blocked with a different hat block, right?
Cuz if it is then that would account for all the comments on
how much better a raiders hat the Christy's is then an HJ not
reblocked by AB.

Re: HJ = Christy?
Briscott, great photo comparison! I always wanted to see that!
thecoolmiester, Christys´ don´t block the hat, but they are willing to change brim dimensions and ribbons if you want. Which HJ won´t do, at least that´s my experience with them.
I think the reason why so many people say that the Christys´ is a better Raiders hat than the stock HJ is simply that more people can afford the Christys´.

Re: HJ = Christy?
I wold say that the block is the same as the current HJs. The Christy's doesn't lend itself to a perfect Raiders look but it is pretty close, just like the current HJs. The Magnoli/AB HJ is the closest thing to the Raiders hat available. If you want one, though, I'd order now as Steve said when his stock of HJs ran out he would no longer make them.

Re: HJ = Christy?
thanks, briscotts. comparison photos are always useful, and yours prove quite well that christy's and hj are one and the same. a close-up of the ribbons would be appreciated, given that ribbons are often the most distinctive part of hats (I learnt this in the various "guess the hat" threads, where a close-up of the ribbon would sell off the hat's brand)

Re: HJ = Christy?
on hornetshats.com they say that the crown hight of the Adventuer is 5 3/4".
http://www.hornetshats.com/faqs.php
wouldn't this be taller then the standard HJ?

Re: HJ = Christy?
briscott, maybe it's like you say, or perhaps it's just about the batch. I mean, maybe when they produced the raw body for your HJ, the color was the felt was almost over and so...
mhhh, I'm not able to explain the concept in english

So what you are trying to say is that you think that it's possibly because the rawbodies weren't from the same run and had different amounts of dye?Restless Dreamer wrote:briscott, maybe it's like you say, or perhaps it's just about the batch. Sounds reasonable to me but it could also be that sable/light sable thing.

Re: HJ = Christy?
You know the scenario, ask silly question get a silly answer....but I've been out of the loop for awhile, so I hope you won't mind a few questions....
From what I read in the past, apparently the HJ's, circa Raiders, sourced thier felt from the Curry factory in Brasil, some 29 years ago, give or take. Are the Christy's and HJ's still sorced from the Curry factory, or are we at liberty to say? Does Akruba source their felt from a felter in Australia? Is there one in Aussie? Just curious.

Re: HJ = Christy?
I know nothing about akubra, but for what I know about HJ is that they stopped using the Cury felt since ToD - they were using a Borsalino felt, instead.
But I don't know which felt they are using nowadays so, yes, mine is an useless answer
