Bullwhips- Airport security

Is it legal to bring a bullwhip to the airport if it is in luggage that is NOT carry on luggage? (can you have a bullwhip in a suitcase that you are checking in?

Yes it is legal.
I would never do it though.
Ship it to your destination.

I've packed my whip in my checked luggage on the way to summits and have never had a problem. I don't think you could get away with it if you tried to take it in carry on luggage, however.

I've always transported via checked baggage. I don't like it, but sometimes it is the only way to do it. If I have the time and opportunity to ship it, I will. I still want to find a way to carry it as carry-on (some of these are too valuable to trust the baggage folks).

Has anyone had any experience with a whip in their carry-on baggage?

I just got back from Minneapolis and I was traveling with three whips in my checked luggage. On both legs (to and from) my bag was screened by the TSA with no problems.

A few years ago I got a tip from another performer: when traveling with your show/gear put a flyer or headshot on the top of your luggage, so when the screener opens it the first thing they see is your flyer of headshot and know all the strange stuff you are traveling with is for some sort of show.
