Jonsey, DON'T!
Better using a 100$ banknote to roll yourself a cigar and smoke it rather than buying a DP. Trust me.

And
Apart from the "highest-quality material" lie, could you gentlemen tell me why and how they can claim their hats are handmade??? I own a fur felt DP and on the brim it says "handmade"Each handcrafted hat is made of the highest-quality material

here it is....
maboot38 wrote:Things can be hand made and still made in a factory. Textile factories employ many people to make individual parts of the hats. For example, one person might cut all the hats by hand and hand them off to another who blocks and steams them by hand, and then another bashes them "by hand", then another sews the ribbons on by hand/sewing machine.
Depends on your interpretation of "hand made".

That's not even the $100 one. That's the $40 wool piece.Restless Dreamer wrote:Jonsey, DON'T!

I own the crushable wool too. I bought the fur felt for me, and that one for my father. man...horrible.
now I wonder: could the wool felt version somewhat be better than the fur felt? wool felt is so much easier to reshape, while the DP fur felt is stiff as a rock: impossible to reshape it correctly without a block.
Anyway, some time ago, someone posted a photo of a reblocked DP with fuller earth: that one was a nice hat, I swear

If you haven't already, check out this site:
http://www.hallituskatu14.com/fedora/fedora.html
They recently updated the prices on various "real" fedoras. Last week I ordered a Fed IV (the basic one not the deluxe), with shipping from Australia it was $93. I spent time researching on this site before I made my purchase. I can't wait to get it!
Happy cracking,
Ryan

That website gets a lot of things wrong like the handmade/factary part
and a couple of other miner details but it's a good resource if looking
for an indy hat and are a noooooby.
Btw the christy's crown hight is 5 3/4" not 5 1/4" is says it on hornetshats.com
FAQ tab.

Ill be honest with you, i think it looks bloody awful. Theres lots of these heart breakingly poor hats on the market. they are found in fancy dress shops the world over and are not really a IJ hat. Save well my friend and get yourself kitted out with an Adventurebilt.

Re:
I had one. It would have been a fair starter hat on a tight budget, but I have owned crushable far superior to it. It looks nice in pictures, and from a distance. Otherwise, it's a limp piece of junk.
The fur felts, while not accurate in the slightest, get a bum rap. They really aren't that bad by modern factory hat standards. And I've seen a few reshaped by hand into something a bit more respectable. You just need to break them in. A good wet-down will probably do the trick.
I also know of at least one that has survived some serious abuse.
Trust a man who has tried, the DP wool felts are not easier to shape. The crushable won't hold any shape but the one it comes in, and those helmet-hard wools would have to be so soaked to reshape, it would ruin the hat.Restless Dreamer wrote: now I wonder: could the wool felt version somewhat be better than the fur felt? wool felt is so much easier to reshape, while the DP fur felt is stiff as a rock: impossible to reshape it correctly without a block.

Re: Re:
I agree with you, Chewie. I remember seeing Minnesota Jones' fur felt DP some years ago and was pleasantly surprised by it. Those are decent hats, even if they're not SA. I remember begging for one of them when they came out and never got one. I've still been tempted over the years to pick one up for the nostalgia of it.Chewbacca Jones wrote:The fur felts, while not accurate in the slightest, get a bum rap.
