Can I make it larger / smaller

I've a 'Bates' fed that I bought when I was a teenager. I've put on weight since then, and possibly grew a bit (it was a LONG time ago). I know there are hat wideners / streatchers , if you don't have this kit how easy is it to make a hat bigger without messing it up? Also if it is all weight and is then lost, can you make it smaller again (without messing it up)?
