How to lighten a jacket.

Post by The_Raiders »

I have had my Todd's jacket for quite some time now. And ever since I got it (even after distressing) it looks somewhat like a dark maroon brown color, pretty dark, and not really the same color as any of the jackets used in the films. I'd like it to look similar to the LC jacket, buit I don't know how I can lighten it up. (If possible even). I can't afford another jacket, so does anyone know what I can do to solve this problem?

acetone removes the dye......but it is a very tricky procedure. if you go down that road, you may end up with something you don't like so be cautious.

Just wear and enjoy. You really can't lighten it up and if you try do you really want to ruin it? Besides, dark jackets are cool.

Alcohol might be an option, too. Though like acetone, be careful. I applied alcohol to my Todd's strap and had second thoughts about using it on my Wested. :-k Though, it's not at potent as acetone.

I know dark jackets are cool, but I want it to look as screen accurate as possible. I want something close to the LC look.
I might do a little test with alchohol, though. :-k

Don't get carried away with the SA look. Phone, or go into a store that deals with leather and talk to them. If you don't, you might wind up very unhappy.

Multiple Questions

Post by Insomniac »

I've read multiple threads about this and have a few questions my plan is to lighten up my jacket by tanning it.
I read something that Michealson posting only dyed Westeds will tan.
Is this correct?
Yes or No

If so are all Westeds dyed?
Also, should I put Pecards on before or after tanning?

Thanks Again. :H:

As it will be your only Indy jacket for the time being, I'd be more worried about it shrinking or simply aging prematurely...

Wested's novapelle will lighten nicely with abrasion, but Todd's standard is kind of gray just under the thin brown "coating" or finish. So, if you were to lighten it up I fear you would be sporting the first gray Indy jacket. However, if your jacket is more recent, since the leather has changed character somewhat, you may try distressing a sample area under the collar and see what you come up with.

Then, if he followed Tony Nowak's advice and popped his collar, he'd have a weird abraised spot on it!
