Indy's carry-on bag?

Anyone found a vendor/source for a carry-on bag like Indy's?

I'm referring to the overnight bag/suitcase that he's stuffing clothes into while talking to the Dean in his house. We see it again as he's walking down the train platform.

Great-looking bag!

I was interested in this too, Tony. There's a good pic of it on p280 of 'The Complete Making of' book. Very stylish piece of luggage.

Ah, wonderful....maybe we can find out where it came from.

Alas, my "Making of" book was pre-ordered from the Indiana Jones Shop and my local B&N doesn't have a copy. So, unless I order one from Amazon, I should see my copy show up........oh, around Christmas, I guess. LOL

Just got my "Making Of...." book. There's a couple of pics of the bag -- I'll see if I can track it down. It definitely has the same "look" as the doctor's bag that Long John posted.

I think it's probably a 'gladstone' bag. But, yes, very close to the ones Long John posted...

Good book isn't it? Check out Ford laughing on p74 - that must have been quite some joke Rhys-Davies was telling!

It's interesting that I would have called that carry-on a Gladstone, but when I did a bit of a search it seems that a Gladstone is often described as a bag that opens into 2 equal sections, like a modern suitcase. Maybe it's really a "satchel".

I see a lot of these bags going by the description of a "doctor's bag". But that seems to imply a smaller bag....not the large suitcase that Indy used.

I wish I could. But J. Peterson hasn't seemed to have any interest in joining the rest of the civilized world in actually offering photographs of their products. Subsequently, I've never been confident enough to order something for fear that it'll show up and be completely different from what I expected.

I can't say I rember the bag well-enough from the only time I saw the film, so I can only make somewhat general suggestions. But period-accurate luggage would certainly be available at Swaine, Adeney in London, current owners of Herbert Johnson. It's just where Indy might have bought it in the 30's/40's/50's and YOU can today. Just a thought.

I keep looking and hoping. There was a nice one on the auction site a little bit ago that went for about $75.00 US. It listed as a "Vintage 17Lx10Wx12H LEATHER VALISE SUITCASE Brass Hdw".

I use search terms like "vintage antique valise suitcase satchel luggage". There's a fair chance that will turn up bags like he used in LC and ToD as well.

Isn't that particular style of bag called a gladstone? Try using that in a search.

I actually have a bag like that and the leather is in real nice shape, or it was the last time I looked at it. The thread has given up though. I'd think that if you had the time, you could fix it right up. You can see the thread holes and all you'd have to do is restitch it. If I still have it and it's in the condition I think it is, I'll list it in the classifieds. Free to a good home, just pay shipping.

I've heard it referred to as a "gladstone" several times. The problem is that there are tons of different gladstone styles, makers, shapes and sizes!

Anyone got any contacts with the propmaster for IV who can tell us more about this bag?

I have been seeking a Grip Bag for quit some time. Most are either way too big for day to day use or way too expensive. The coolest I have seen was the xs Gladestone bag from Palmer and Sons. Small enough for everyday use, vintage looking but with enough hardware to make it look very trendy. Regular runs close to $500. He quoted me, with a few customizations I was interested in, about $650. And everytime I start to save money for one somebody puts up a really nice item in the CB.

Thanx. The lining is in absolutely perfect shape. From the seller's description:

Size is 19" x 13" x 10". "Genuine Grain Cowhide" stamped on the bottom, along with the numerals "570" and "18". "570" could be a style and "18" could mean 1918 as the year of manufacture

Since the dimensions add up to less than 45 inches I think this is OK as a carry-on with the airlines, too. There's another on that big site listed as Vtg Cowhide Leather Doctor Bag Satchel Celluloid Tag with a $50 buy it now or make offer that was my fallback if this one didn't come through for less.

I'm really pleased with this addition to my "gear".

I must admit, I was completely surprised when I found this bag. The price tag said $25.00. At first I thought it was $250.00 which might have been a reasonable price for a piece in this condition. Just as a joke I asked the proprietor if he would take $20.00 for the bag and he said OK.

I treated it inside (completely leather lined) and out with Lexol.
This is my go to bag for short business trips etc.

My wife and I are about to celebrate our 5th Wedding Anniversary, and my wife surprised me tonight with a gift: the "AWOL Bag" from the Duluth Trading Company! Thank you for the suggestion in here, Long John Tinfoil!

This would be classified more as a "close-enough" rather than an accurate copy of Indy's bag. But I'm quite pleased with this rugged, oiled cowhide leather bag! I just packed it for our upcoming anniversary weekend trip:

Zipped and strapped closed with handles up:

Open and packed for the weekend (3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shorts, 1 pair dress shoes, filled leather shaving kit, belt, socks, undershirts and so forth):

Closed with my Penman Train Traveler on top for scale:

Looking forward to trying it out soon! $\:D/$

Jeff: the bag worked quite well for the weekend! I like that it's a flexible bag instead of stiff, which makes it a lot more versatile IMHO. I'm flying out to Nebraska soon for a wedding and can only take carry-on luggage, so I just recently packed it to see if I could get by with just this bag for about five days. Turns out it should work just fine: by rolling up my clothes, I can fit in my Red Wing boots, a belt, a suit, 3 regular shirts and 1 dress shirt, a pair of jeans, and various under-layer items. I can even fit my brown Adventurebilt CS fedora in it while wearing my granite Penman Traveler hat. This will be an even better test of the bag, so I'll let you know how it works for me with flying.

The zipper seems plenty sturdy to me--I'll keep an eye out on it for this upcoming trip and let you know.

Just a quick update for you all on the bag and zipper (particularly for you, Jeff): it held up very well under some tough conditions! I packed it to the limits--so much so that I could barely get the sides together enough to zip. Yet the zipper worked very well: no signs of strain or anything. It's holding up as well as any zipper I've ever handled. The bag got a lot of banging around, too. In airplanes I shoved it into the overhead compartment, or underneath the seat in front of me. It worked like a charm. I'd recommend it!
