Magnoli hat Q

Post by thecoolmiester »

How long does it take for one of the Magnoli HJs to arrive?
And who reblocks them? is it the guys at AB?

And I'd like to see some pics of the hat if anyone has got them. :)

From what I hear, somewhere between 3-6 months.

Yep.

Also, if I could give you some advice, I wouldn't necessarily go with the Magnoli one - Magnoli makes undisputably the best Herbert Johnson on the market, but that doesn't change the fact that HJ is still using really low-quality felt. There's only so much an artist like Steve can do to make it a great hat. If you want the functional equivalent on a Magnoli HJ - rabbit felt that is as close as you can get to the Raiders hat, I'd either go for the one Steve's selling on the Cairo Bazaar right now, or wait a few weeks for LLS to start making hats (http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37649) - he's going to be making what amounts to the new rabbit AB, with the best block on the market and some killer rabbit felt. Best of all, it's $90 cheaper than an HJ. -M

As of the end of January, the backlog was about 5 months.

Didn't Steve say he was no longer doing the HJ's when the current stock was depleted?

I don't think an official cut-off was announced, but I remember a post that said the HJ work would be coming to an end in the near future.

for some reason I think it would be realy cool if mine took 7 months: it would then arive near my birthday \:D/

But if the wait turns out to be shorter or longer, well, I want that hat so I'll just wait 'till it gets here and be pleased whith it when it does ;)

As will I; mine was ordered in October. But with all due respect, I'm a little concerned if the wait time has increased by another two months.

I think the extended wait time is just the way it goes. When I originally ordered mine, I was told 2 months. Honestly by month seven I was starting to get a little worried, but when my lid finally arrived, I felt as though it was worth the wait. Magnoli and Steve are the pinnacle of professionalism, and will get the hat out to you as quick as possible.

True. I'm just concerned about getting it due to...changed circumstances on my end.

When I initially ordered mine gwyddion I was having the same thought process as you are having now. The 3-4 month window quoted would have had the hat arriving around Christmas '08 or my birthday in Jan. '09. If it had arrived in that time frame either one would have been a heckuva gift. My wife purchased a second hat stand for me as a Christmas present since I was expecting the new hat. :) I am not bitter or angry , I know these hats take time, but I am a little anxious.

I can promise you coolmeister COW members will be among the first to know once the hat has arrived.

Well, I didn't order it with that in mind at all, I just saw the 7 month wait someone had and thought it would be funny if my hat would arrive in that time-frame. Seriously, I wouldn't mind if it takes 4 years to get here, as long as does. I have a Henry and a second-hand AB already, so I have good hats to tie me over for the wait. And appart from that, some things are just worth waiting for :)

I do however understand that those who are waiting longer (sometimes much longer) than the quoted time are getting, well, anxious to finally have it. That is exactly the reason I don't ask estimates: I know it will get here in the end (well, barring accidents offcourse) and I don't want to dissapoint myself by believing a quoted time on hand-made products in a time where demand obviously has been growing rapidly. Steve is only one man with one set of hands and I understand that, in these post Indy IV times, he got a "little" swamped so I have decided not to ask for a quoted time myself.

I do hope you all get your hats soon though and that it will feel like a second christmass or birthday for you guys.

the 2 months i had to wait :o ( because i sent it in the middle of that stock show )

I've tried to be patient myself, but again with all due respect to Steve, I've become more and more frustrated as the wait keeps getting upped. I know my frustration doesn't compete with any of the AB customers, but it's still annoying, especially with the large financial investment and the issues on my end I alluded to earlier.

I have to agree - Its six months and counting for me too and while I'm sympathetic to the process involved in its creation one of the attractive things about ordering the HJ originally was the three-month wait. If I'd wanted an AB with its guaranteed longtime wait I'd have ordered one. Fact is the customer service regarding information about this (not at all inexpensive) item is lacking also - one line emails stating the 'wait time has been extended' doesn't really tell me much or make me feel valued. I'm sorry to say I'm unimpressed.

When is LLS Going to start making hats. And will they be on Steve Delk's AB Web site?

He said sometime in March, IIRC. And no, I don't think he will be selling them from the AB site, seeing as how he's not a member of the AB company. -M

Magnoli's catalog is impressive and I'd like to order more stuff, but with all due respect to him, I agree it's bad publicity if customers keep leaving angry comments about wait times and lack of communication on the HJ review feature on his main site.

In the meantime...
thecoolmiester wrote:And I'd like to see some pics of the hat if anyone has got them. :)
(thecoolmeister DID ask to see a few photos, after all...)
So, here's a couple of "Re-Run" shots (posted 'em before)... I'm lookin' forward to getting outside and having a few taken once the warmer weather gets here).
Since this thread has spent a little time on the issue of "the wait" I thought I'd try to give a little bit of equal air time to the final product (since you DID ask)...
Hope you like,
Mitch

It's REALLY soft and... well... "squishy", Randy. It's got a lot of give and you can easily smoosh down the crown in pretty much any direction and yet the thing pretty much "pops" right back into perfect shape when you re-bash.
I LOVE this hat!
:D
Glad you like the looks of it, coolmiester!
For me, it's just that much more proof that Steve's got that magic touch!

I think it's that LLS has been working on a reverse-engineering the Raider's block and has been in contact with Steve during the process. Now LLS is going to be making rabbit fedoras off his block and Steve has given him some pointers in the finer art of hatmaking. LLS has his own company and isn't working for Steve.

I don't think he has a website.

There is a whole thread dedicated to LLS's Rabbit Fedoras... I would suggest looking there for any details you might need, including PMing LLS himself.
