Hey guys! Hope all is well! I'm near the Dead Sea close to Amman, Jordan and have been on an archaeological dig for 3 weeks and have 2 left. We've been finding lots and traveling on our days off. I see that John is still making fine hats, and have really field tested the Penman lately, holding up well! Bests to all, Scott.

I made it after a hat his grandfather ( my stepfather) used to wear. I think my nephew is getting the fedora bug. He started to change his style of dress to go with the hat. This the 2nd. hat I made for him. The first was a CS brown.

For my taste, the hat with the 5 3/4 body is the best looking hat I've seen in quite a while. I wished I would have known about the taller crown when I bought my Sahara Penman. Good job.

Forgive me if this has been stated elsewhere. Will the rabbits initially only be offered in brown, or will there be several?
Randy
P.S I just noticed my "hat status" has jumped!

Thanks Mitch
its meant to be more of an LC bash as thats my favourite style . But before i set in the LC bash i couldnt resist turning the hat a little just to see if it would work and do you know what?...it did! . I have 2 other Lids and not one of them took the turn yet the Penman does...Quality!!!
The hat isnt turned now by the way!

Thanks chaps
John has done a stunning job with this hat and he got my size spot on!. I couldnt believe how well the hat fit me when i took it out the box, there really is nothing nicer than putting on a brand new made to measure hat

Today I coupled my Penman with dressier clothes, along the lines of Dr. Henry Jones, Jr... Sported a somewhat festive bowtie, in order to provide a flash of colour to the otherwise sober outfit!

Here is the Penman/AB ribbon compison photo I told you guys about. To me, there is no difference between the two, Also, there isn't any taper to my Penman, its the angle I was holding it.

WOW...Dave, thank God you're still breathing. Feel better man!
As for how my Penman lid is holding up...well I thought I'd up date the thread with a pic I literally just took.
It's hard to believe it, but it actually looks better now than when I took the first pics (see my avatar)! Way to go John! And I still love that ribbon to boot. I'm so happy you found it! That's just one of the things what sets you and Steve and Marc above the rest my friend.
Congrats!

Alright. I'm finally part of the club!
I went with something a bit different, as in; not an Indy hat. More in line with what I normally wear. I have to say, John makes a great hat, and it's nice to know that my support of him these past months has been well placed.
The felt is charcoal gray (the photos just can't capture the deep grey of this thing), with black ribbon.
Funny story; My father came in as I was cropping the photos. He sees the pic and the actually hat on the table nearby, and comments that nobody will realize that the hat is brown! He wasn't joking, either. He knows nothing of the brown/gray debate, and really didn't see the hat as gray.
Note the "invisible stitches" of his bow work!
All of the pictures so far are here; http://s208.photobucket.com/albums/bb36 ... og/Penman/
I love my new hat... and my new camera that can take good indoor pictures!

John,
I think you had posted somewhere about the proper way to brush the fedora, but I lost its place. Could you post the procedure for brushing the fedora?
...counterclockwise on the brim? What about the body and crown? Anyone? Are all hats to be brushed this way? thanks!

pop the bash out. Brush the hat on the very top of the crown front to back. Then brush it counter clockwise around the crown. Then brush the brim counter clockwise as well. Then flip the hat over and brush the bottom of the brim clockwise. Pop the bash back and place on you head.
Try different strokes when brushing to see what works best.

Here's a picture of my fiance and I in DC when we were visiting some family back in February. Shows how great the Penman holds up. Be it the heat and humidity of the Miami summer or the cold and snow of Washington, the Penman can stand up to it.

I've had my Penman since Nov, and love it, I know alot of guys like he worn look, but I gave mine a good brushing and used one of those lint rollers too and now it looks brand new again , and I just love it. I wouldn't have the heart to add fullers or sit on it. I love it as is, I'm one very happy and satisfied customer. I did spill a little coffee on the liner back around Jan, so that' sthe only real thing that looks worn, but still good, yep still good. to quote Stich.I've watched too many disney movies with my little guy oh well.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
I am odd when it comes to the state of my hats. I beat the snot out of my Indy hats. I sit on them, punch them, step on them, roll them up and mash them into a floppy fur substance, but I like them to appear clean, meaning no dirt, sweat, fuller's, dust, or anything like that. I brush my hats quite often because of that. I may be an anomaly.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
So as a present for myself, I finally have ordered my second Penman hat. Can't wait for it to arrive in a few months. It's mainly going to be a dress hat, so sorry, no adventuring. In the meantime, here's a pic of my first Penman, labeled as a "Raiders Gray" before it's official name as "The Seaplane." I got this back in October, and I try pretty much to wear it when I go out as much as possible. Although, for costume purposes, I'm growing out my hair for conventions this summer, and the hat is a little snug on me. I think I'll head in for a trim to make the hat fit better. Here's my most recent pic, linked for bigness:
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
Alright! I finally have me a Penman! What can I say, I'm ecstatic! John even said to me that he thinks the hat he made for me might very well be his finest work to date and I'm inclined to believe so!
Anyway, I promise a full review will be coming in the weeks ahead, but due to my busy schedule (going to TX tomorrow, WA next week, and the UK the week after), you will have to settle for a teaser pic for now. One of these hats is a "Ford Felt" AB and one is my new Penman (and guess what, you can't tell the difference by rubbing your hand on them). Without giving too much away now, I gotta say, the new block is awesome! I can't believe how low I can drop the back!
Ok, that's enough sentences ending in an exclamation point for now, I'll try and restrain myself. So, which is which people?
Regards,
Brian

I took my hats out today for a photo shoot that I posted on facebook. I took some pics of my Penman hats. You can see that my Raiders hat has held up very well. I wanted to see how deep I can make the center dent so there does appear to be some taper but man did it take a deep dent to do it!
Yes, John, the wedding hat went right back in the box once the photos were snapped!

I just want to say that this hat seems to be getting better & better the more I wear it. The sweatband & crown are conforming well to my head. Really better than it was before. Thanks John for a fantastic job on the reblock & shaping!

And here she is on my head.
I gave her a turn but the brim needs time to set into it. I really like that last shot. I think it looks a lot like the shot of Ford as he turns around to find Belloq smoking his hookah.

TS, oh I love it. I just can't get over the look and feel of it. WOW is all I can say. Below is what I wrote last week which probably got lost on page 16. Here it is again (and Dave, thanks! Now I'm part of the Penman family ):Texan Scott wrote:There ya' go, JC! Post 'em up! How do you like it? C'mon, customer testimonial...
John,
I just got my hat too. Beside it also pouring out, my photographer (wife) won't be home till after 6pm. I could not get over the look of the hat, the color of it and the soft feel is just undescribable. I also love the bash job you did, this hat just screams RAIDERS! I love that rich brown color. I thought at first the hat was a bit snug (not too snug) but I'm also used to wearing baseball caps too. But after wearing it for a while as I'm typing, it seems to feel fine now. When I heard the doorbell rang, I either thought its a solicitor (we get them a lot here ) or the mailman. Fortunately it was the latter . I went running to the door to beat my Shepherd mix to it and I saw the mailman holding a huge white box. YES! was my thought, my hat . So pics to follow later .

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
Its here today! My Raiders Penman came today! I must say that with all the good reviews that I had read here I knew I was getting a solid hat right up there with Steve and Marc's hats. But when it came and I pulled it out of the box, those expectations were exceeded! This is the nicest hat that I have handled. Its put together beautifully, the beaver feels super smooth, the sweatband feels great to the touch and on my head. The main thing too is it fits my head perfectly! Putting it on, it just feels right to me, everything about it, and it has that perfect Raiders look. I'll try and post some pics as soon as I can, outdoors for sure (might be a day or two, got a lot on my plate today). Thanks again John! The wait is worth it... trust me

I was able to get outside after work today, and take some pics of my beaver Penman Raiders hat. We finally had some nice weather here (rain all the time lately) and had to get some pics of the hat. So here they are:

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
Just received my new Raiders Penman today. Went with the Beaver, Raven Bar scene and a black liner. Was very excited that my hat was the hat used in Oak's You Tube Raiders Bash video. However, when I opened the box, ther wasn't much of a bash in it at all. Good thing the video is up . The felt is much softer than the other Penman's I own. Maybe Oak can add his two cents on it. I'll try to post pics tomorrow when I have some natural light. Oak, thanks again. As always, the hat looks beautiful and it fits perfect

I was lucky enough to find a new Penman on ebay in my size. The sweatband looks unworn and it fits me perfectly.
Its absolutely beautiful, the felt is smooth, the colour is so rich, the bow is a beautiful flying V. I love it.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Alright, so I thought it was time to post some updated pics of my Penman Raiders beaver hat. Instead of showing my mug, I figured my fiance was much better to look at. So, here is a 360 view of the hat.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i201/ ... IM3320.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i201/ ... IM3321.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
My future brother in law also received his first Penman and I had her model it too. It is a Dillinger-inspired hat.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i201/ ... IM3324.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The bulge on the non-bow side of the hat has started to develop and the channel on that side dent is there too, though not very visible in these pics. All I've done is worn the hat. It has become as floppy as it was before the reblock. These babies are the best.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
I finally have a pic of me wearing my Grey Raiders Seaplane Penman. It's not a very good picture, since right now I do not have anyone else to take the picture for me... and I work too much to find extra time to do it... but this should work for now.
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
Just thought I would send a few pics of the latest Penman. Went with the Raiders Beaver. Hat is fantastic. It is so soft. It feels nothing like my other Penman Beaver CS hats. Went with a Raven Bar bash, but it was so soft it actually popped out in the mail. Opened the box to find an opened crowned hat . Ribbon & sweat are what we have come to expect from John. Went with a black liner. Seems to hide the sweat better. Customer service is best in the business period. Enjoy.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
...well, John said his Penman hats are bulldog tough so I had someone drag me all the way home the other day! No, seriously, I took my Penman on an Archaeological Dig, back in Jan-Feb of this year and used it in the field, as we were excavating. While using it, I was swinging a pick axe and doing other dirt work for five weeks. This was dig season IV, at Tall el Hammam, and being new to the program, and new to the dig, the director gave me the opportunity to get some experience on several different sub-projects on site, like working on top of the Tall (Iron Age I & II Era), around the Roman aqueducts and the remains of the Roman bathhouse ruins, the city's dollman field (graves), excavating the main city gate, before finally settling into the main dig on the lower Tall (Calcalithic, Early Bronze Age to Middle Bronze Age Eras). Anyway, I took my Penman and didn't baby it much, ...but put it through what an Archaeologist might have undertaken back in the day. Even though it was Feb. in Jordan, I had to put it aside and use the other hat, because it was simply getting too warm, but still used it for about 3 weeks solid. As you might understand, it was my version of the SoC fedora. Needless to say, it held up like a champ, and before John did the reblock, I'd asked him to put the soiled ribbon back on the hat, as a momento of my experience. It has almost become an 'old' friend! As my Dad used to say....'wouldn't trade it for a plug nickel'!

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues...
As is customarily the case, I bash my own hats, self taught, and my method is a bit unorthodox, if you consider the norm. I'll explain....first turn the hat over and find the little white bow on the inside of the sweatband. Hold this place with your thumb on the back of the hat, outside, near the lower portion of the ribbon, as it marks the center of the hat. Place your hat, topside up, on a flat surface. Locating the center of your hat (where your thumb marks its center point), take a ruler and bash the crown...this is so your bashed crown will be perfectly straight, and in the middle, with no uneven sides. I use my index finger and thumb to put the pinches in the front. (The Hats Direct, heels of the hand method for the front dents are also a good idea.)
The bash is somewhat of a hybrid, a cross between a Raiders and LC bash, in that in the top 1/2 inch portion is tightly pinched, while the rest is relaxed, like a LC. The crown height is 4 1/2 inches total.
Reblock is a process hatters use to clean soiled, dirty felt on a hat with solution or possibly water. They first have to take the old sweatband, ribbon and liner out, and then after the felt is dry, they replace the sweatband and liner inside the hat. It is restored as though it were new.
