"Necessary" is in the eye of the beholder; one of the great things about Fedoras is that you can style them to your individual tastes.

Based on your photos, I personally think your hat looks perfect on you just as it is.

In my experience, when you get that downward bend on the front of the brim, the hat has to start tilting backward or you can't see very well. Then the hat takes on a different character. I think it just depends on your style and what scene (if any) you want to mimic from the movies.

Bartram, your hat looks perfect for your face/head shape. Unless you have a specific scene, etc. in mind, I wouldn't change a thing :)

Here's a shot of the crown from the top. I'm still fighting it a bit, but some of the issue is that my head is really tall (ball caps never sit quite right) so my head is pushing on the center crease no matter what I do.

Front's coming together though:

Also, thanks for the input on the brim all. I think I just needed reminding;) I'm leaving it as is.

I agree with Russian Raider: the brim looks great. It has a nice dip over your right eye (you know, it being lower in front of your right eye than in front of your left) which is exactly how it should behave.

I figured i'd share. I don't take many pictures of myself, but my pops took this one of me in my brown Fed in front of the J. Edgar Hoover Building.

Indy gave me my love of Fedoras, and i love'em and wear them all the time.

My New Akubra Federation Deluxe IV (Moonstone)!

Post by hulkamad »

Guess what arrived in the mail a little while ago? What's this? A box? What awesomeness lies within?

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... e/1box.jpg

My very first hat! An Akubra Federation Deluxe in Moonstone! Awesome!

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... /2open.jpg

Wonder at the mysterious bag and sponge protective wrapping...

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... e/3bag.jpg

Behold, its glorious inside!

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... inside.jpg

What was this called again? Oh, yeah. Federation Deluxe IV. Says so right there on the band. Duh

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... /5band.jpg

Be careful. Looking at pictures of this hat too long may cause a ridiculous amounts of envy and jealousy. Your skull might spontaneously blow up. Mine won't cuz I'm wearing this hat, preventing any possible skull blowingupage.

http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww92 ... rontup.jpg

Next, I will show what it looks like after I bash it. That might be to much awesome though...

And here we go!

As you can see, my face has melted off from the glorious majesty of wearing one of the greatest lids ever invented. (Actually, I'm one of those paranoid people who won't post pics of himself online. That way, the Government can't track me down. lol! This Federation fits better than my tin-foil hat...)

Image

Or maybe my face looks like that cuz I took a peek inside the ark of the covenant...

I just got my first Fedora, an Akubra Federation IV regular. I thought I'd post up a pic. I dove right in to bashing it. When I first bashed it my wife thought I looked ridiculous and my daughter said I looked like Willie Wonka - the tall crown takes getting used to. I have kept playing with it and think I have it looking like I want it to. It's not really screen accurate but I was really only trying to get it to look okay on me. I'm pretty satisfied and am looking forward to the natural aging process.

If you're ordering a Federation from Hats Direct, the shipping doesn't take that long. On average, you should have your hat in about a week to 10 days or so from the time your order goes through. It's not uncommon that they arrive sooner, too.

I used the fastest mailing option that hatsdirect.com had so I would get my hat by Halloween (exactly seven days away from when I ordered) and it frustratingly came two days after Halloween. I had to wear a very bad hat that I made myself instead.

Three to five days. If you order Monday ( early Australian time ), You'll likely have it Friday, lastest. Did two hats like this on different occassions ( with the current exchange, why not? ); ordered Friday evening USA time. Got both hats by the following Thursday. So not counting Sunday, that's five full days on each count.

First, I'm honored that my bash is even considered worthy of being called "Raidersish"!

Second, I followed one of the tutorials on the Raiders bash (though I chose a slightly less pronounced turn) and wasn't afraid to put a little steam and muscle into the front brim and the pinch. (I also picked it up by the pinch the first 20 or so time I put it on to try and really set it right.)

I think another thing that has been helping mine out are the foam fitting strips. My head is a long oval so I ordered my Fed a bit large and have to use the foam strips Hats Direct included in the hat to snug it up. I noticed that when I started moving the foam strips around in the sweat band the the contours of the hat shift ever so subtly. For me, putting one inside the back of the sweat allows my forehead to put the right kind of pressure on the front (with out a strip) and viola - it does that cool Raiders-Hat-brim-thing just right.

If you got those strips with your Fed, give it a try and see what it does. If you don't try a little tissue paper.

Looking forward to seeing your bash!

Best,
B

man......it seems everyone has left me in the dust with their 'first bashes'. my first bash was on a fed 3.......i recall oak giving me some tips on the center crease and in hindsight, he was being very very very very kind to me......it looked like i used a fishing line to set the center crease in :-0

be proud of that first bash attempt. you did one heck of a job. now start scrunching that brim to give it more of a 'curl' (ala raiders) and so it sits less flat (ala TOD) on your noggin ;)

everyone knows that the raiders hat was squished, but it was squished in a certain way to promote some of the shape of it. i think i can recreate how to squish the hat just right......i'll make a post of this in the future.

in short, give her a good snap brim and curl up the slides so it doesn't look so flat. keep an eye out for a post on squishing and curling the brim.....i'll try to get it up this weekend.

Hey guys, got my Fed IV standard through the post today.

Being the impulsive type I went ahead and bashed straight out of the box, with no experience, practice or pictures to guide me. 'Makin' it up as I go...'

I did, however, then go dig out some pics from the Cairo scenes and used those as I tweaked...still not used steam yet, may do if it doesn't settle...seems ok so far...

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3831/dsc00136l.jpg

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7856/picture450.jpg

and finally, for comparative purposes, my fed next to my very first Dorfman wool felt

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8269/picture460.jpg

(let me know if the links don't work...)

I certainly don't have the expertise of some of you guys but I'm pretty happy with my first attempt...as long as it looks ok on my head I'm not *too* concerned abut SA. :-k

Fox Harrison if you're shooting for the TOD airplane lid i think you're pretty close. That center dent and the shorter front make it look pretty good. I think the bash fits you.

If you're shooting for any Raideresque bash you'll need to raise the front pinch up, it should be about 4.5 to 4.75 inches from the bottom of the ribbon to the top of the pinch where it meets the center crease. This means you'll have to have a more shallow center crease.

That said i think the bash you've got now is just fine. Like alot of people on this board will argue, if you like it and it fits you wear it proudly. It does't always need to be screen accurate.

Thanks for taking time to check it out Indy 35, I agree with you on that centre dent actually. ToD was the first Indy movie I saw on the big screen, so maybe it's a subconscious leaning towards the shorter more tapered crown (blasphemy, I know  ).

And like you said, you gotta wear what suits your face anyway. Looking at it now, next to the ToD pics...yeah. well that's what I got without having a pic in front of me to go by anyhow :-k

Thanks for the kind words, Best,

OrangeArmIndy a little steam goes a long way on getting that brim to shape up. Having just bashed a Fed recently, the steam makes a world of difference. Likewise, and I realize I just said this in an earlier post, but making sure the hat is fitting snugly makes a difference on brim shape IMO.

You're well on your way. Good show!

Also, kudos to you Fox. I'd be interested to see your hat after a good stomping as Indiana G reminded me. Here's hoping his post on "the stomp" is up soon.

Keep up the good work though. As you said, it looks good on you and that's what matters most.

stomp? i thought i said 'squish'? anyways, you can stomp on your hat too....just use your clean bare feet

i posted 'bash that brim!' in the fedora section.....it outlines how to compress your hat to accentuate the raiders brim shape more.

one thing that i didn't really go into detail is how to hold the hat. when the hat is turned, you will get that natural sloping snap brim on the non-bow side that most of you are aware of. cradle that transition with your right hand (crown facing you) with the palm supporting where the brim angles down to the front of the hat. with the left hand, cup the portion of the left side brim where it starts to curl towards the back......now just squish along the shape lines of the hat. the right side brim should be compressed so that the angled break is folded in on each other on the brim and the entire brim is folded up towards the crown. you will see that the right side brim in it's folded state will line up with the right side dent nicely (you can see a pic i posted on the other thread). the left side is just compressed normally to promote the curl.

when you are done, be sure to fix your crown cuz she'll be squished a tad and may look a tad tapered.....just pop it back into shape.

hope this helps, but like i said in the other thread.....don't do this unless you are comfortable with your hat shaping skills ;)

cheers,

IndianaG, right! The "squish" it is indeed :D .
Found your post about it here:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38265&p=548568#p548568.

Check it out for anybody looking to go as SA as possible.
Likewise, the hat in your "Crowning Achievement" post is very impressive (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37924. What a great hat and bash! Have you been able to get similar results with a Fed, given it's block shape? I'd be interested to know.
Again, yours just looks fantastic!

Thanks for sharing what you know.

Thanks for sharing what you know.

thank you very much bartram for the nice words. i bought a fed 4 to be my CS 'stunt hat' so i only put an unturned soft pinch bash in her.....and not a very good one i must say. holt made a CS bash on his fed 4 that endangered AB's sales......just kidding AB, but you get my point. the akubra is one of the best factory hats i have handled, but there's not enough brim for me to put a raiders style on it to compliment my fat face

the fed 4 dimensions is very raiders-esque with whiskeyman's face shape and head size though.....

One thing I found out the hard way about "squishing" or "stomping" your hat is that you need to be careful not to pinch the sweat band too tightly. There is a thin wire in the sweatband that is fairly easily damaged and won't really go back into shape. :o I thought about taking it out but am not sure what the long term consequences would be. I was able to lessen some of the more major kinks but it's not a good as I'd like it.
