Indy G's crowning achievement (no punn intended)

Post by Indiana G »

......and it's not even SA in colour!!! .......oh the irony for a stitch nazi

i chose this colour as i wanted a raiders fed that looked dusty (ie - mechanic fight/flying wing scenes). she's a pecan rabbit body with a dark brown ribbon (not indy brown).

everything on her went perfectly: block, brim cut, dim cut, pounce, sweat sew, flanging, ribbon sewing, and creasing......i couldn't of asked for a funner hat to make. this hat has successfuly quenched my thirst for making another hat in the near future.....i'm gonna wear this one for a while :)

thanks for looking:

G,

Thats a really nice fedora. I really like the shape of it and the bash. Excellent work. I really need to get a proper hat...

I think you are pretty close, except I think you have accented the dropped back too much. Just my opinion though Indy G. This is as very difficult thing to get just right though. Took LLS over two years to finally get it just right. And, I think at least going by your pic that the top crease needs to be just a bit deeper, or rather, the top of the block is still just a little off that will yield this when you drop the back down low. To me it looks very close, but is still just a bit off. That's my problem though, wanting the block to be just right. When you push up the back crease, it should match the outside the temple hat, that you see when he is getting the sand for his bag. You can see that when the back is pushed up, the start of the radius, or breaking point on the back of the hat. Copy that, and your block will be fixed. Don't want to add extra work, but you have come too far to stop now! :) When LLS less if more, he was dead on. Fedora

you are exactly right steve. the back portion in my eyes is not SA. the height at where the crease ends is imo, the right place but the humps need to be bigger in the back. this is where it gets tricky because you want to increase the height of the humps yet at the same time, keep the arc of the hat. as you know, its just not a matter of building the block taller in the back because if you crease it down too low, she'll taper (but also give us a nice reverse taper on the back profile). alot of variables come into play and you have to picture what the bashed raiders hat looks like open crowned.

building the block higher will rely on the depth of the back crease to give you the nice arc....mine is built in to the block. this will take a steady hand to bash correctly.....but i may have a game plan in the back of my head.........just gotta see if ohio is up for another go round with the grinder and some new poplar ;-)

That is one lovely looking hat mate, you must be very proud when people ask you where you bought it from and you tell them you made it yourself. :notworthy:

G,

I love it.....and yes....I am always up for block building. I would gladly make you another one to your specs. Just do me a favor when you send the schematics.....send one in your size...and one in a 23 3/4 for my monster melon....lol...just kidding.

Keep me posted...and I have poplar on standby...screaming...."make me into a block please!"

Keep it up buddy.

thank you all very much for the nice remarks. this hat is going to be an 'old friend' in no time. i'm growing more and more fond of it everyday...........but, i know theres is room for SA improvement (it's a disease that i have, i know). though this hat is beautiful in it's own shape and spec.....fedora, LLS, and $3K have plagued me with their sickness

based on the shape of this block, i believe i know what i need to do to get the little detail that this hat lacks to be THE raiders hat....and only one man knows how to transition all of these breakpoints nicely onto a block per my drawings.......ohio buddy, fire up that grinder :)

G, I think it would still fit your face if you lowered the front, but it doesn't look bad as is. - The brim is very SA.

The right and left brim look really great in those side profile shots. Each looks how they should, dead on, at least in my mind.

I love the hat and the color is really beautiful. I also recognize the invasion of the living room by your "Golden Idol's" toy collection. My son's is the same way, and ever growing.

And just when I thought G's work couldn't get any better, he gets his hat to beat even Ford's ToD hat... I may not be an expert on hats, but if it means anything, that one just screams "IIIIINDY!" :notworthy:

Speaking of Indy and screen-accuracy, looks like your little one has the Ford-glare down pat! :rolling:

I really like the color, and personally think the rear of the crown looks very vintage vs. Indy [which I like] ... Good job!

Man, after I read crisman's post complimenting Indiana G on his cute daughter, I had to do a double take since I read the next post from PyramidBlaster this way, "Man, that hat is really making me wanna start making my own kids...Well Done!". Sheesh, I didn't know we were that pleased with hats on the forum these days. Sorry, I thought that was kind of funny and don't mean it in a perverse way, it just struck me as a kind of a humorous read. :- #-o
