A different kind of hat

Post by rebelgtp »

As I mentioned in this thread I thought it was time for a new hat. I've been working on my paleontology quite a bit lately and I'll be working in the field quite a bit this spring and summer. Most of the areas will be harsh sun and not very fur felt friendly. I knew there were others here that liked this hat and were asking about it as well.

Anyway so I went about figuring out a few of the basics of Dr Grants hat from the first Jurassic Park movie. Could not find any information about it online so to the DVDs I went. I found that his hat changed about as much from scene to scene as Indy's does in Raiders. I got the basics down though, palm leaf body, tear drop crown, wide brim, tight pinch, horse hair band under an inch wide.

So I ordered an open crown palm leaf body 5 3/4 inch crown height and 3 1/2 inch wide brim. The band is braided horse hair in black brown and white. I got the body completely soaked, I was actually surprised how water tight the crown was, I filled the inside with water and barely a trickle was coming out. It took all of a couple minutes to get it shaped up for this first time. I'll fine tune it more later.

Next up I need to dirty the thing up a bit maybe grind a bit of fossil dust in

Anyway before anyone says this thread is useless without pics here they are. The first ones are of it open crown, then it shaped, then one of my Akubra Fed to give a sense of scale.

So what do you think?

Came out nice. The open crown pictures looked too much like a beach hat my wife has, but with the reshaping I think you could be proud to wear it in the field.
I won't hit you with this ;0

but I will hit you with "Let's see the hat on your head" we need an emoticon for that.

Regards,

lol yeah when I saw the open body I was wondering if I would be able to pull off the shape but its really locked in the shape now. Amazing what a little water will do.

Looks like a nice wide brim to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Now let's see it on your head! :)

I caught JP tonight and was noticing that the lawyer seems to be wearing a Belloq style hat, probably a deliberate counter to Dr. Grant's character, one could interpret... :-k

I think it looks good. Keep in mind, though, that if the hat is woven too tight it will breathe even less than a light weight fur felt hat. Very Dr. Grant though. I haven't seen the JP in a while but it looks pretty SA going off what I have stored in the ol' noddle.
