Brim flange question.

Just a quick question for the resident hatters. I have an old hat flange that has no finish to it. Should I apply polyurethane or some other sealant to it to protect it during the flanging process? Thanks!

No, don't worry about sealing it. It is not necessary. Plus, you won't have to worry about the hat glueing itself to the flange, as heat will do this, if you seal it with shellac, varnish, or polyurethane. Fedora[/quote]

Absolutely true. My first brim flange I finished with a sealer and when I ironed and steamed the brim down in turned parts of the brim green.

My last flange I used a coat of tung oil....and have had no ill effects on it. I was more worried about the moisture getting into the wood and making it warp or find a small check in it and making it bigger.
