Magic Raiders whip

Post by knibs7 »

Anyone else notice this "magic" bullwhip in the Raiders truck scene?... Indy attaches the whip to the truck's undercarriage by the butt, but then you can clearly see where where the whip is connected to a bar by the axle. Then, you see the handle dragging behind in the dirt.

I think what we have are two very different pieces of filming. The one of Indy attaching the whip is Terry Leonard going under the truck. Once the actual stunt was over, they could easily have rerigged the whip/truck for what would be best for Harrison to be dragged.

The magic of the words "Cut" and "Action".

I think the dragging scene was actually filmed by a totally different crew in a different location. Ford wasn't even there, so they definitely did the scene with at least two shoots.

Actually the one closeup shot of the whip being attached was at ILM, if I recall correctly. The actual dragging was a combination of the Terry Leonard stunt and the closeups of Harrison, and the shots of Indy going under the truck were Terry.

Ok I wasn't being literal... I know that they obviously did many takes and used different filming locations on this stunt, therefore making continuity errors with the whip. I was merely being sarcastic when calling it the "magic" whip

No, no, no! It's one of those special "double handled" bullwhips! Knock the @#$% out of your opponent or yourself every time you try to crack it!

Nibs, if I've told you once.....

there are no out-takes or special effects while being drug by a truck! You are your own stuntman, no one to sub for you when the dragging gets tough, no yelling cut when you hit a rock. We call that a back scratcher! Hitch your whip to the undercarriage and hang on tightly, we're goin' for a lil' ride! ;-)

How's that Nowak jacket looking? Any success with it and the 'one step distressing method'?

lol That would be awesome! I wonder if you would have to pay double for the extra handle...

If you watch the thong in the third pic, you can see there's something that looks like a broken overlay strand. OUCH! So you would technically have to break a strand in your Raiders whip to make it more SA. :P

What's really illusion defeating is the quick shot of the orchestra in the back of the truck. You can see John Williams briefly when Indy climbs out of the ripped canvas. And the crate costume the horn section was wearing is sheer awful.

Man... Movie editing is a lost art.

huh? They added more cliff because 100 foot fall wasn't enough?

So, the new dvd releases are not the same as the original dvd box set? What else was added?

(This would be a new thread me thinks...)

So, did they remove the orchestra from the truck in the new releases?

:)

WOW! you guys can really pick apart a great scene! :#:

Let's revisit the "suspension of disbelief" and assume that the whip would survive dragging Indy around and still function. In that case, He simply gave the whip a heroic "shake" as he was climbing into the back of the truck, freeing the handle from the undercarriage. Since he was holding the other end, as he climbed the handle would naturally drag along behind him.

There's no movie magic in that! It's simple skill from Indy who can apparently do anything.

(I heard he once fought Chuck Norris and won. After the fight he used his whip to slice each and every one of Chuck's beard hairs off one by one! :whip: )

That's not a rumor, it's true. My buddy had a friend that was there when it happened!

The way I heard it, Indy challenged Norris to a fight, but Chuck ducked it.

Not sure how that would work out,
I have heard that each of Chuck Norris' individual beard hair are more dense than a coil spring on a truck...
