another new world record, Beijing
I just got done doing another whip cracking record in Beijing, most candles put out in a minute with a whip. This was for a television show filmed for China Central Television, where I competed against the current record holder, who is chinese.
The old record was 22 candles in a minute. I did 50 candles in 36 seconds, but couldn't do more as that's all the candles they had set up in the television studio. The rules say that all the candles must be lit before starting the attempt, so I couldn't start relighting candles.
So my record stands as 50 candles in a minute, though I could've done 80 or something.
I guess that makes 6 world records for me, which will still be the case when Dante's record is verified. Since once you set a record, you're always a record holder, even if it is beaten.

Yes Bob, I used the 216 footer
Not really ;-)
I dressed as kind of a modern cowboy with an embroidered western shirt, jeans, large cowboy hat and cowboy boots. The renaissance outfit I have doesn't translate as well as a cowboy outfit does on TV, especially Chinese TV. For the whip, I used a 3 1/2 ft stockwhip and did the overhand flick the whole way down.
Chris,
There were about 3 or 4 cracks that put out 2 candles at once. In the spirit of full disclosure, it's supposed to be one crack for each candle. I asked the Guinness representative if he would look back over the video and determine how many candles I got with one crack, discounting the multiples, but he said since they short-changed me on the number of candles I was given, that he'd let it slide, figuring I would've done 50 candles in a minute anyway.
You also aren't supposed to hit the wax, but I asked the Guinness dude and he said those two rules are there just to prevent someone from setting up a ton of candles and just knocking them over with a whip, taking out rows at a time with each crack.

That's incredible, Adam. I can't wait till they give you a room full of candles and see how many you can REALLY do in a minute.
I hope there will be a YouTube post of this soon!

Stunning! Congrats! If I could put out 2 candles in 1 minute I would be a happy camper - under pressure 1 would probably be a problem! ;-) 50, 80 whatever - either way it's amazing! What does it take to have another go and try to raise the count officially? Is there a time period you have to wait or anything like that?

That made things click together - now I know why when thay announce someone that holds the record for something they introduce them as ". . . current world record holder . . ."winrichwhips wrote:Since once you set a record, you're always a record holder, even if it is beaten.

Hey Swindy,
I used a 3 1/2 ft stockwhip by Chris Barr. My Chinese competitor had whips that were made from strips of something or other that were wrapped with tape (not plaited). His shortest whips were about 7 ft.
When we did the rehearsals, and he saw how fast the 3 1/2 ft whip was, he thought about using that whip instead of his own. Come show time, however, I think pride overcame and he used his own whips instead.
