Anyone applied Pecards to a Tony Nowak?

Post by OWJ88 »

I am very happy with my Tony Nowak, but I was considering applying some Pecards to it. This worked great with my LC Wested, but with Tony's I don't know if its such a good idea. Does any Tony Nowak owners out there have any before and after photos? Or even some suggestions? Just curious.

Thanks!

Cheers,

I can't find the thread, but someone applied various applications to the leather patch on the canvas bag that came with the jacket to see how it would affect the leather. I have a second Nowak on the way, so I may end up trying Pecards on one of them.

When I asked Tony if he recommended using Pecard's on his jackets, he said, "What's that?" When I told him, he said some people use stuff like that, but it's not necessary and that he doesn't even recommend cleaning his jackets.

I was toying with the idea of using Pecard's on my first TN because it is more distressed and lighter in color overall than my second. I think it would darken it up a bit and look great. When I get some time I will most likely do it.

Yeah, I'm very interested in how it might come out... I plan to wear my jacket in all weather, so I want to make sure it's covered, but don't know how it'd affect the pre-distress Tony does. I also don't have any Pecard's, however, so I think I'll wait until some adventurous soul out there does it first. :D

I will most likely wait. Tony also told me not to treat it or clean it. I really like the look of the soft leather, but a little Pecards might make it darker and have a heavier look. I will just wait and see what anyone else does. See their photos and decide then. Until then, I will just wear it out and as long as it doesn't start to shrink from the dry air, just let it do its thing.

This is exactly what Peter told me when I ordered my first Wested so many years ago. You have a brand new leather jacket and it just doesn't need the treatment. Treat it when it needs it, such would be the case if you wear it constantly in very extreme temps which tend to dry out the leather. But ask yourself why you're treating it when it's brand new? What is the point?

In the business, it's called 'preventative maintenance'.

Peter told you that? He's changed his tune. He used to send out a can of Letaps with every jacket with the instruction to apply it as soon as you received your jacket in order to keep it looking great for a longer period of time!

My, have times changed!

Wait...the Nowak jacket is "fuzzy" and "velvety"? It doesn't have a comparable smoothness to the touch as, say, a Wested lamb or goat? The descriptions are sounding more like suede. Please clarify! :)

Well, the feel is comparable to a brand new Wested Novapelle, which has a similar fuzzy, velvety feel. I'm guessing it's simply a pleasant(?) side-effect of the pre-distressing process...

I just thought I'd update this with two discoveries I've made...

The first: Apparently, not all of Nowak's jackets are of the fuzzy, velvety kind. My not-so-distressed Nowak jacket had a very smooth sheen to it, kind of like laminated wood (maybe not the best analogy, but the first one I could think of ;) ). So I suppose that means that the fuzzy texture was due to the distressing process after all...

The second discovery was that... Well, I suppose I'm the first person here to publicly announce that I've decided to swim upstream, and apply Pecards standard dressing to my Nowak jacket!

However, most of you will be disappointed to hear that I applied it to my 'Mutt' Nowak instead of the 'Indy', since I figured that if the color would change, a few darker shades of black would be alot less noticable than brown.

The good news is that like a Wested Novapelle, the Nowak absorbed the Pecards pretty quickly, which means not having to wait around the house for weeks for it all to be absorbed. The bad news though, is that due to the bumpy texture of the cowhide, along with the design of the Mutt jacket, applying Pecards takes forever. The texture also makes it feel as if you're sanding down the jacket with your fingers, which could be a plus or minus depending on personal preferences.

Perhaps when the weather starts getting cooler, and jacket season is in full swing, I might try out the process on my Indy jackets... until then though, any takers? ;)

I recently applied some Pecards creme to my TN. It turned the jacket a little darker which I like. It still has that "weathered" look but is more subdued now. The leather now feels very smooth and luxurious.

I want to see dark brown Pecards on a lighter, heavy distressed Nowak jacket.

Someone must have done this by now...

Yeah, as a result of the distressing, some parts of the jacket seem *almost* suede. Trust me, it's a good thing though, it's a very nice effect.

I've pecarded my TN Indy IV - for about 3 days its a shade darker, then it goes back to its normal color and feel. No lasting effects at all. -M

I know exactly to what you are referring with the "fuzzy" references to the leather. I had a US Wings jacket a while back, that cow leather was that same feel. I Pecards'd it and here is how it comes out- Lighter side is before, darker side is after. The leather becomes smooth (like the leather should be) and darker, it made it WAY better IMO.

Are'nt you supposed to keep putting it on, until the leather soaks it up? Maybe you need to apply more still?

Texas Raider - Did you use the 'brown' Pecards? The cream or dressing? BTW, I can't find the brown Pecards on the site? Which one is it?

As I recall, TR used standard dressing. You can add dressing each time it gets lighter in color, and it eventually darkens...but it's not a bad deal that it does lighten up, as it visually gives you a signal when it needs more product applied.

I guess if you don't ever apply dressing you might be buying jackets at a somewhat increased rate, which I presume would be good from the vendor's perspective.
