Newbie!...Advice on sizing etc - Wested Raider Jacket

Post by sunny12 »

Hello!...I'm new to this forum and looking for guidence/advice on ordering a new Wested raider jacket. The jacket is a gift for my dad so I want to make sure I make the right choice I.E. size and type of leather. My dad wears a size 40 regular suit jacket...I got him to measure the sleeve and shoulder length which are as follows: sleeve 25" inches shoulder 6". I would like a heavyweight leather, and goatskin is the prefered choice...or is the horsehide and cowhide a better choice??....I was looking at the standard sizes on the Wested web site and think the 40 Long would be the correct size...any help or advice you guys can give me would be gratefully received. One last question can I buy a 40 Long off the rack or is this classed as a custom jacket?...

Many Thanks

I'm pretty sure Long sizes are considered custom. I wear a 40 Long suit jacket but picked up a 42 reg Wested and it fits pretty well.

Sean,

If a thicker hide is what you want, I would choose either the horsehide or cowhide. I've heard the horsehide is fantastic!

Kind regards,

Sean,

I have it in lamb. I haven't been artifically distressing it, but I have been wearing it regularly since September and it isn't showing any signs of wear.

sizing the jacket is tricky.. i wear 40 on suit jacket. i wear 44 on casual jackets. my loose measurement is 42 with t-shirt on. what i did was i got one of my casual jacket, zip up the front, lay it on the floor flat and measured from arm pit to arm pit. that came out 23. this means that my size is 42 with 4" movement room, or 44 with 2" movement room.

i ordered 42 with 4" movement. not sure if that made any difference, but i like what i've received from wested.

i got horsehide. it feels very nice and strong. good weight without being too heavy. so far it went down to 32 degree F here, and it feels fine with just t-shirt and a button down under the jacket.

What exactly do you mean you ordered a 42 with 4" movement? It sounds like I might be exactly your size and I would really like to just be able to order a jacket that fits well, because I don't want to end up spending a lot of money shipping things back and forth.

Also do you have a ROLA Special or the regular Raiders. I think I would like to get the ROLA in goat.

Thanks.

a tailor would tell me to go with a size 44 jacket. wested's 42 however, fits me the way an indy jacket should (at least the raiders version). if i were to order a casual, non-indy fit that looks nice, i can and have bought a 44. hope that helps.

it's something i read in this forum. the jacket has to have some 'movement room', otherwise, it will fit very tight. the casual jackets that i wear usually runs 44R. my actual measurement is 42R loose. when i order the raider jacket, i thought about ordering 44 or 42.. 44 might look too big on me, and 42 might be too tight. so i sent an email and asked for 42 with 4" movement room.

i ordered custom raider with 80's fit. this is the list of things i asked for. and i got exactly that.. everything i asked for was there.

Chest: 42 inches (loose) I would like 4 inches of movement room.
Back length: 25.5 inches
Sleeve length: 24.25 inches
Hide: Horsehide (darkest and warmest brown, if possible)
Lining: Cotton Body/Sleeves
Side Fastener: Anodised Black Rectangular Slider
Zip Type: Nickel 5 Zip Gauge
Gussets: yes
Heavy duty stitching on everything.
Pattern: 80's fit
Storm Flap: 1.5 inches width with a rounded top corner
Zipper: Extends to the bottom of the jacket
Collar: 2.75 inches on the tips, tapering down to 2.5 inches
The left collar should also extend to the midway point of the top of the storm flap
Pockets: scalloped flap (if at all possible stitches on the pockets are re-enforced. They will be used heavily.)
Width of pocket: 6.75 inches
Length of pocket (including pocket flap):7.25 inches
Pocket flap length in middle of flap: 2.75 inches
Pleat depth: 1.25 inches
Side Strap: Length: 8.75 inches; Width: 1 inch
Side straps sewn with X pattern AND box pattern, double stitched
Side vent stitch: no stitch holding the side vents closed.
Yoke seam: The arm seam should be 1 inch below the yoke seam
Back panel: The back panel should extend all the way out to the yoke seam.
