IndyGear on a budget....

Post by Texan Scott »

I thought we might get some input on thrifty ways you can get your fair portion of the gear and not spend a fortune. Here is a short list, your thoughts/input of your own choices:

Hat: Fed IV, Deluxe or Stadard, $120-$76
Shirt: A close-enough (such as Lighthouse) or thrift purchase. Indy shirt--WPG or Todd's. $20-$50
Jacket: Todd's Standard or Wested Standard. $150-$220
Bag and Strap: WPG or Todd's +/- $50
Web Belt: various, Ebay--very inexpensive, +/- $1.90
Gun Belt: Todd's and others--$30
Whip holder: $20
Whip: depends on maker and length, $100 to $1,500
Holster: Todd's clearance, $20
Pants: Close-enough--Wrangler casual khakis, Wal-Mart, taupe. $15
Boots: Todds. $75

On the low end, you could easily spend less that $600 for a complete set of the gear. This does not take into consideration thrift or second hand purchases. Obviously, if you shopped around long enough, and bought everything second hand, you might pay half the price, but let's say you bought everything new. Your own vendor selections and input:

If you're on a budget, you can find all sorts of good finds in thrifts shops, surplus stores, and even eBay if you look hard enough. Keep in mind, "budget Indy" is also just as much about the "close enoughs."

From personal experience:
L.L. Bean taupe chinos $3.50 at Goodwill
Orvis Officer's twill trousers (pinks) $30 off eBay
Military style close enough shirt $1 in a vintage clothing store clearance rack
Old Navy close enough shirt $15 (a few years ago they had some great ones)
Ren Faire tankard holder, exactly the same as a Whip holder $5
Close enough gun belt $2 from Goodwill
Vintage Beaver Brand hat which I had converted to an Indy $3 at Goodwill
You can get a close enough bag from Sportman's Guide for $15
Used HK rifle sling for strap $9 off eBay

That's a mere total of $53.50 for the majority of the outfit.

You can find close enough boots at a thrift store and get a Todd's basic holster and still come out with an Indy outfit for well under $100. If you're diligent and patient, you could end up with a great Indy outfit for pennies on the dollar!

Heres mine:
Hat: Close enough wool felt from burlington $15
Coat: again Burlington suede jacket $60
Shirt: Wal Mart clearance shirt $10
Shoes: Loafers with everything but laces and high tops (couldnt tell with pants on)
Pants: pair of khakis $35
Bag: Pre owned Magnoli for $15 (strap came from old bag of mine)
Belts: Cant remember where I got them but its a total of $20 I think
And due to my lack of money and the fact that there is no place that sells them close by: No holster or whip.

My outfit:

Akubra Federation: $130 (w/shipping)
Boots $10 (From thrift shop. They are shoes, but when you are wearing pants anyways, they look similar Aldens.)
Pants: $4 (thrift shop)
Shirt: $3 (thrift shop)
Web belt: $2 (thrift shop)
Todds Budget Gun Belt: $15 (I don't think he has these anymore)
Todds Holster: $30
WPG MK VII Repro.: $36
Todds Bag Strap: $12 - $20 (can't remember)
Whip from jrzjoe on eBay: 30 (w/shipping)
Custom whip holder: $6 (PM me if interested)

Roughly $275

Of course it isn't everything, but it gets the Indy look very well.
