English Whips - Would it be aceptable
I talked some time ago to David at the Whipstore.com. He was very helpfull and suggested a 100% Kangeroo hide 6 or possibly 8ft whip with a 10inch handle. Now I know the movie whips had an 8inch handle and varied from 6 to 16foot long. Apparently a shorter whip is easier to learn with and less likely to get damaged during that process. Apparently the slightly longer handle is also better, interms of use and practicality, although not SA.
Now all whips are expensive, but some are alot more than others. I won't be getting 'lots' of whips (shame shame) and so want the one I get to be able to cover everything and be my 'Indy' whip. I've never used one before so it is probably not an idea to go for the 10ft that I was thinking of. If I went for the 8ft would that look 'good' in terms of sitting on display / on a costume. I thought the 10ft would look better but am affraid of not taking his advice on the ease of learning and ending up damageing it and never really learning a few 'tricks'. Also would the handle length be a 'really bad' thing in terms of the 'look', or would only the most die hard of fans (such as here) actually notice this.
Please let me know as you all have vast experience of being both SA and using them. Oh and what do you think of his whips?
Thanks, Raider

Also if considered an aceptable alternative would going from 12 to 16 plaits alter it too much any further? I'm not sure how much different they look but understand 16 makes for a 'better' whip in terms of the way it looks, feels and works. I know you all know the answers
Oh and where is a good place to get a whip holder, preferably in the UK?

I must not be useing the right combination of words, I get swamped with loads of hits, it's difficult to see the wood for the trees.WhipDude wrote:All of this stuff is covered in depth in the bullwhip forum. Why not search for it? You'll get everything you want right then and there with indepth photos sometimes too.
Plait count, length, handle size, screen accuracy are covered. I'm sure there's a review around here for Davids whips as well.
Can anyone attest to the quality etc of Tonys 'Indy prop' whips or can post a link to where it has been discussed before? Thanks

You really need to ask yourself a few questions:
A) How much do you want to spend?
B) Is it strickly for costume purposes?
C) Do you plan on using it to really learn the art of whipcracking?
D) How important is being 100% SA to you?
There are plenty of "close enoughs" out there if you just want something to look good but will crack.
It doesn't take much to make any whip crack.
Money is where you'll probably make your final decision.

I don't want to steer you away from something you really want, but if it was me I'd go for the 8ft. BUT, if you have your heart set on a 10 ft then nothing else is going to do. I just know in my own experience, that a 10ft is l-o-n-g when you start cracking it. I've moved from a 6ft being my favorite whip to now an 8ft.. I've tried throwing a ten ft whip before and didn't care for it at all. Probably because I'm not that good
