Do you apply Fuller's Earth on your AB or AB Deluxe?

Yes, the more magic Cairo dust the better!

Have an AB shipped w/ FE already applied by Steve or Marc?

Post by KrYpToNiAn1 »

My CS hat from Steve will supposedly be shipping soon...

Just out of curiousity, has anyone purchased a hat from Adventurebilt, and had them distress it with Fuller's Earth before shipping? Since I'll never wear the hat with a suit, I'm goin for a more casual look. I figured the craftsmen themselves would know how to dust up the hat perfectly. When I open that box, I want it to look and feel like it fell off of Indy's head and on mine. ;-)

Has Steve or Marc done it for anyone elses hat? I read somewhere that they've done it to their own personal hat(s)??? Anyone have pics?

Thanks,

s.

Here's a pic of a Magnoli HJ Steve put some earth on.

I remember the first time Steve tried some fuller's earth out on a fedora he said something to the effect of "boy, this stuff works pretty good, I can see why they use it in the movies!" :)

I find the Indy hat can be casual as long as it's worn with casual clothes and a casual attitude, so I keep mine clean. One day, it might get dirty or rumpled, and I won't cry about it. But to me, putting fake dirt on a hat for everyday wear (which is what my lids are for) is dangerously close to wearing a costume. Sure, it makes for great gear photo ops, but I ain't payin' that kind of money to look good in the occasional picture! I want to look good in a suit or in jeans, even without a camera in sight.

I like to let things distress naturally. Like Chewie, I wear my hats with suits and with everyday street clothes, so I normally keep them nice and clean. I don't use my hats as costume pieces; they are worn everyday. You wouldn't leave your house with dirt thrown on your pants would you? I wouldn't, so why would my hat. It all depends on what you are going to use the hat for. If it will be a costume or display piece, then I'd say go for it, otherwise, keep it nice and clean, even if Indy's hat looked like it has the snot beat outta it.

Too me it's comparable to buying pre-distressed clothes. I've paid more for jeans in the past due to the intentional rips, patches and stitches added during production to give them character, and that lived in look. Also similar in fashion, are our Tony Nowak jackets which came pre-distressed with adventure scars... this detailing - makes the jacket - in my opinion.

What I wanted to know more specifically is, has anyone had Steve dress their hat before shipping? I figured it would give him another opportunity to add some more of his creative touches and magic to the hat. These hats are a work of art, and I have a feeling that my inner-child will glow even brighter if I open that box to a hat that looks like THE hat...

Mr. Delk e-mailed me back today claiming my hat will be finished this month... So maybe not by my birthday on the 11th as I had hoped - but at least by New Years! He also mentioned in his e-mail that he would "FE" the hat for me prior to shipping... I can't believe nobody else has had him do this! I don't mean cover the hat in cob webs, or drag it under a truck... All I'm saying is - Won't having the craftsman himself finish off the hat with a bit of 'movie magic,' make it that much more special?

So excited for this hat... I feel so lame - and my girlfriend is gonna kill me if I bring it up once more.
