First Post! Ordered AB Fedora

Post by lantzn »

Hello Everyone,
I've been a Indy fan for years and after visiting a small Bavarian style town here in WA state, called Leavenworth, I bought an inexpensive wool Indy hat. I've had so many compliments on the hat that my wife said she wanted to get me a real Indy fedora for our anniversary. The wool hat is the first hat I've ever worn on a daily basis. I love this style of hat! So after doing a ton of Googling on the web I decided to purchase a handmade Adventurebilt. Steve has my payment and measurements and told me about this site.
After I get my hat I'll be getting a Nowak Indy4 jacket to go with it.
Nice site by the way!

By chance does anyone know the current wait times for the handmade AB hats? I noticed some older posts that looked like the wait was about a year when the new Indy movie was hot on the scene. Speaking of the movie, I just picked up the 4 movie collector pack yesterday. It's been awhile since seeing the older ones.

Someone just posted that he heard from Steve yesterday, and his hat was due to be placed on the block. His order was made September '07, so based on that, (depending on size, of course) he's running about 14 months.

Welcome and congrats on placing your AB order. I think Steve is cathcing up little by little because his orders started to thin a few months after the announcement was made that he and Marc would be making the hats for Crystal Skull. I don't think you'll be waiting a year, close to it, but probably not that long. The trick is to just push your order out of your mind and when it arrives it arrives.

I'm sure that while you are looking around about the wait times you'll find that it's pretty much unanimous - It'll be worth the wait!

Very true. Also, if you intend to get a Nowak jacket, I'd really hurry - from what I hear, he doesn't have many left - he may not have any left, come to think of it. -M

hmmm.......14 months.... :-k

In this age of climate change and global warming, that's a lonnnng time to keep your head unprotected,..
If I were you I'd shell out 70 bucks and get a Fed IV in the interim. :)

I'd take darthbish's advice and get another fedora to help ease the wait. There are a number of fedoras that will cover your head nicely while you wait for for your AB.

The wait...

As mentioned I just picked up my first hat. Even though it's inexpensive by comparison, I really like it and it's holding up well in this wet weather we have up here in the great northwet (missing s intended).
This is the same hat from another vendor.

Yesterday I read about the Penman Hat Co. in Oregon. He's close to home. I may have him make me a CS grey fedora to tide me over. I emailed him yesterday. Any Penman hat owners in this forum? How do you like the hat? I wear a lot of suits and so getting hats in different colors sounds fun. I also like those big brimmed akruba style hats.

When I emailed Tony about the jacket he replied that he makes them custom fit to my measurements. He pointed me to his webpage that shows you how to take your measurements. Your comment sounds like he might have been offering ready made jackets in standard sizes (i.e. S, M, L, XL, XXL). Is this so? Anyhow he told me the custom made jackets are $675 +shp.

Tony only makes custom Indy jackets, but the CS jacket is an edition limited to 777 jackets, that's why they said to hurry as he's been selling quiye a lot of those.

As for Penman hats, check the threads on those. As far as I can tell, everybody who owns one loves it. BendingOak sure turned out to be a great hatter.

The Penman is a great hat. The only other hatters in league with Oak are the boys over at AB. If your thinking about a Penman, visit John's website, www.penmanhats.com , and check it out. His prices simply cannot be beat for a custom beaver fedora. He is a great guy and will work very hard to get you exactly what you want. I'd jump on the Penman now before his wait time exceedes six months. You will not regret it.

Sounds like a good idea to me - I've heard nothing but rave reviews of Penman hats - just be careful about how you measure - Penman's sizes aren't off-the-rack, and so if you order your standard hat size you may find yourself with a hat that doesn't fit - be sure to tell him exactly how many inches your head measures and you should be fine. -M

I just posted this in another thread today:

"Hi Paul. I am only July, August and Sept order now. I have yours down to be made, and passed over it here a week or so ago as the blocks were tied up from a previous order. It will get made (both) this month. Thanks! Steve"

My order was placed on July 29, 2007 so that will give you a pretty good idea what the wait time is. Don't let it bother you though - it is well worth the wait. I already have a TOD AB and Steve is making my brown Raiders (Idol Grab) and Grey CS this month. Woo Hoo!! Can't wait to see those boxes on my door step. His hats are top quality and worth every penny and minute of waiting. Having said that, I can recall reading somewhere that his orders peaked around July / August of last year so his turnaround time should be reduced somewhat once he passes those orders.

Oh - and welcome to the forum. The people here are great and very helpful. Just hold onto your wallet because it is addicting.
