Bag Strap

Post by knibs7 »

I've always wondered this, but I am just now getting around to asking... Is it just me or is Indy's bag strap black? I know it is said to be dark brown, but I have always thought that every movie AFTER Raiders, the strap looked black. Also, does anyone know the EXACT type of leather the strap is (besides the rifle sling) and if so, where to get it? This picture shows very interesting distressing on the strap, almost like when tar gets really hot and starts to crack...

I've argued for years that since ToD the bag strap has been black. Also it is most certainly NOT an inch wide, more like 20mm. This photo only illustrates the point IMO.

I'd say about 75% of the distressing you see is age. These were the bags/straps used when filming LC in 1988. I'd wager they haven't been conditioned in about 20 years. If ever.

There are at least three possibilities for the leather type. Vegetable tanned, oak tanned or one of the various oil or chrome tanned processes. My guess is it is vegetable tanned. I made mine using oak tanned hides from Hermann Oak. Oak tanned and vegetable tanned hides are quite similar. That beig said, there is much difference in the quality of hides from different tanneries. Also some parts of the hide are more durable than others, some parts of the hide strecth more than others. Stretching is not a good thing on a bag strap.

The ageing on that strap looks like someone carefully applied a heat gun and some leather dye. However, I wouldn't recommend the heat gun.

Seriously, though. This bag strap issue kinda reminds me of a debate MANY years ago on COW concerning the ribbon of the fedora. Some believed it to be darkest brown and others (myself included, albeit VERY briefly) believed it could've been black! :[

What can I say? 'We were younger.'

But as for the tie in LC, I'd always interpreted that as a respect custom; kind of a, 'I'm on my way to see Dad, better look presentable' thing. :-k

Black bag strap?

Post by chezzy2381 »

Hi all
I think the bag strap is just an old brown one (lc)that has just blackend with age. If you look at some of the pics of the lc holster it nearly always looks black but, is actually a dark brown. I think it is just a mix of muck ,dirt and age.
Chez :)
