A hors....hat of a different color
I made this hat for a customer, who wears my size, and right before I was to mail it out, he cancelled, so I got myself a new hat-finally!!!
This hat is a camel color, 1 5/8 pure rayon hatband, Raiders style. I am wearing it today!!! Hard to get used to not wearing a brown hat, but it is slowly growing on me.

Thanks Bink!!! I stopped to get my cup of coffee on the way to the shop at McD's and the cashier immediately noticed I was not wearing my usual brown fedora. She really liked this color and said she liked it better than the brown. Now, I don't plan on changing my fav color for a fedora, but this one is a very nice change, I must admit. I am eagerly waiting for another cancellation, but this time in a brown CS fedora. I still don't own one!!!! I can't justify taking the time to make myself one, when so many have waited for so long for one of my hats. Fedora

I like this camel shade...the brown usually featured in Indy's hats is way too dark, IMO. and the ribbons: the colors match so well!
it's a funny thing that you have to wait for someone to cancel his order to get yourself a hat that you actually hope for someone to do a cancellation. you really are a Mad Hatter [/u]

Alas, no more of this ribbon is available. The bodies are of course, but I only ordered one for this particular order since there is no demand for this particular color. The ribbon I had bought from ebay, a yard of it a few years ago, and it is vintage stock. I finally got an order that this ribbon would really go with, so I used it. I have another yard of ribbon that is a little darker than this one, but basically the same color, and I am sure one day it will be used-eventually.
Thanks guys for the kind words. I may just hang on to this one since it goes well with my khaki shirts and Bills Khaki trousers. I actually match in my wardrobe, although the brown goes well with the khaki as well. I don't go for the different colors so much, but this camel color looks sorta like a color one would see in an old Great White Hunter flick. If I get a cancellation on that navy blue hat I still have to make, THAT one I won't keep. I like the earth tones when it comes to hats.
The pecan color that I can get isn't what I call a true pecan color. And certainly not like Optimos pecan color which is a true pecan color. The pecan that I get has green in it!!!! And the feltmaker certainly needs to change what they call that color. It is a mixture of brown, but has more green than brown. Nice color, and very vintage, but not suitable for an Indy hat. I recall when I first ordered one and was shocked to see it was not a light brown. Apparently, (for those who know what a pecan looks like before it sheds its skin) they tried to copy the skin color of a pecan, and not the shell, or meat itself. A better name, and more descriptive would be a mossy brown. With the emphasis on the "mossy" part.

Poor Steve!
What a choice...
What will he do?
Will he AGAIN resume life without one of his OWN wonderful creations to wear?
Will he give up this one-of-a-kind hat - so full and rich in character - to once again make one of his throng of fans a happy (hat-wearin') camper?
Or will he listen to the wise and sagely advice of the binkmeister - who only has his Best interest in mind?
What a Cliffhanger!
I can hardly bring myself to call it a night and hit the hay...
Good Luck with your decision Steve... I'm sure you'll do the right thing.
All the Best,
Mitch

Good. My friend, there are plenty of great fedoras out there (and so little time!!! ;-) ) but you and I are both fortunate enough to have plenty of wonderful hats in our collection. I think it's fair to let Steve finally have the ability to enjoy one of his own hats. ;-)fedoralover wrote:Now dagnabit, you guys are making me feel guilty for making an offer.
My friend Fedoralover, it is yours my friend!!! I love this color, but I would rather fill your order if you want this one, than to keep it myself. Heck, one day I will be able to make myself any hat that strikes my fancy!!(I have a short list of hats that I want to make myself, and not all are Indy fedoras) Consider it yours, and glad to get your order filled so you don't have to wait any longer.
Don't go hard on my buddy here folks. Anytime I can fill an order, with a cancellation, it tickles me to do so!!! Rich, to save me mucho time digging through paypal orders, just email me your address and I will ship this one out as soon as I get it!! It has the new liner in it, so you will get to see what it looks like as well. In hand. And you will get to see what vintage pure rayon ribbon looks like. Although, I am quite sure some of your vintage collection has pure rayon as the hatband. So, all I can say is SOLD!!! And very happy to do it too!! That's one hat less to make!!! A win, win situation. And thank you for wanting this one Fedoralover. Regards, Steve

WOW!! I just got home from work and saw this thread had went to a second page, when I just clicked on page 2 without seeing the end of page one, I see these posts and I had to quickly go back to page 1 to see what happened. I was surprised and overjoyed that Steve had agreed to let me have it. This hat is one color scheme that I don't have and I am extremely excited about getting it. Sorry guys, but I had to ask for it.
Steve I sent you an e-mail. Thanks a million. I'll find a box for the safari hat and get it sent off to you.
regards fedoralover

Steve,
I admit that I was a bit saddened to see your "win win" situation. I'm in the camp that says you should be wearing your own creation, so when folk ask what is on your head, you can proudly say it is one of your creations.
Let me make this proposal. I made an order in May, before the price increase for three new hats. Waiting this long for them is not a great hardship, since I have one of your Ford felt hats, a Traveling gray you made, and an AB Deluxe to tide me over. I vote that when you get to my hat order, take a pause and make one for yourself. I won't mind the extra delay. I can't think of one person on this list or any other waiting list that would begrudge you that luxury.
You deserve to be wearing one of you own terrific creations.

As some of you know, I have a very large vintage hat collection. I of course like indy hats as well, but I have three (going on four) Indy hats and 36 vintage hats. So you know where my heart primarily lies.
But seriously - this is one of the greatest hats I have ever seen. And if hadn't known better, I certainly would have assumed it to be vintage.
I saved that photo. At some point before you retire, I am going to ask you for a hat that looks like that one, regardless of color (which is also beautiful, of course).
I would consider it one of the crown jewels of my collection, even amongst the vintage. Beautiful job. Just beautiful. I ordered my AB in May and I can't wait to receive it. (Of course, I'll have to.)
I hope my less-common hat size (7) gets me a little earlier slot...

Fedora, before you ship it out, or Fedoralover, when you get it, PLEASE post some more pics of it showing the color.
I haven't been here for a couple weeks, home is a circus. I stop in tonight and see this!
I kid you not, just yesterday I asked my wife "so, hun, what do you think -when it comes time for my AB to be made, I think I might ask if he has a 'Tan' colored Beaver felt instead of the 'Indy' dark brown. I probably would get a lot more wear out of a light beigey color, especially in the summer, and I have a dark brown Akubra already... I mean, it would still be made by the guy that made them for Indy"
She's no help when it comes to the important things like this. Now after seeing the Camel..me like. me like lots. Me think that Camel with the Indy ribbon would rock.
Darn you Steve and your craftmanship!!!
