Folding a sweatband

Post by Ronski »

I ended up taking an AB off mufflowne hands while I wait for my Mag HJ, however it seems to be slightly too big. I ended up folding the sweatband in half and it fits perfectly. Does anyone else do this and is there a reason I shouldn't fold it?

It will eventually crack the leather.

You can get foam inserts to put behind the band, but I'd recommend you NOT folding the leather sweat.

i agree with michealson, get something like foam to put behind the sweatband. Don't mess up one of Steve's beauty's by folding it.

I have cracked vintage sweats as soon as I've folded them. I don't know about AB sweats, but it's probably no problem folding new Akubra sweats. They are thin lambskin. They smell like a new Wested lambskin jacket. A Wested has yards of tightly folded leather, and it doesn't crack just because it's folded.

The problem with putting the foam behind the sweatband is those bumps I get. Besides, couldn't I just get it reblocked laters and have the size reduced (This is a question, not rhetorical, since I don't really know about reblocking)?

I don't think those would be the same leather or treated the same way.

To answer your question, Ronski, yes, you could have the hat adjusted a size to fit you. ;-)

You could have a new sweatband cut for you but if its a big enough change it would be hard to shrink down Steve's felt a whole block size.

well, I put foam tape in the under the sweatband, a strip on either side and it fits much better. I'm hoping it snugs up the more I wear it. Only time will tell. Thanks for your input.

And after wearing it for a few days the AB has already snugged up quite a bit. It's almost the perfect fit! I've got a feeling it'll be absolutely perfect in a few weeks. Thanks again for all your help!
