Falling value of the AUD

Post by Indiana Greg »

Akubras will likely never be cheaper.

A few of the Akubras at everything Australian are under sixty bucks...

I was looking at this last night. I think I'm going to be with you on a moonstone purchase.

I remember when I got my Fed 3 it was like $70. Hopefully the AUD will fall a little more (is that wrong to hope for?) and the hats will be even cheaper!!

I haven't seen it mentioned, but shipping costs for two hats is only about 25% more than for one... :o

I probably really shouldn't have since my savings/retirement accounts are taking a pummeling  , but I went ahead and took the plunge -- just couldn't pass up this deal. Looking forward to a Fed IV!

I finally did it, too....two! I ordered the Moonstone (Fed Dlx) and the Carbon Grey (Fed)... I just noticed the British spelling of "gray"; kind of like that!

Regarding the exchange rates... don't feel too bad for Hatsdirect. Jenny tells me the with their dollar "going south" that they have been "swamped with orders!"

Great deal!

Post by The Librarian »

I may spring for a Heritage Fawn. I'd was interested in a Moonstone Dlx but they only go to 61. My Fed 3 Dlx is a 61 but with the new sizing I'd need a 62. The upside to that is cause I wanted a Grey Indy hat I ordered a Penman and am currently happilly waiting for it's arrival.

What do you mean by "new sizing"?

I'm new to this (I've worn non-baseball-cap hats for years, but nothing of any real quality...I've now learned), but from the pics I've seen and the rave reviews of the Penman I've read, I'm about ready to order a brown Raider's from him.

This forum is great and I really appreciate those who have made it possible and those who contribute!

Sizing.

Seems their new hats run a half size smaller than the Fed 3s.

Quality/Schmality. Did you like 'em and how you looked in them?
I've bought cheap wool felt hats for years. Mostly fedoras or similar. One summer I bought a leather Aussie hat and insisted on wearing it in 90 degree weather cause I liked how it looked. Lost a lot of weight that summer. My fanciest hat before my Fed Dlx was a Stetson straw that I seduced my wife-to-be with. Looked like the preacher in "Tales of the Gold Monkey"
My finding this forum and others like it has raised my standards quite a bit. I was led to them by my interest in Indiana Jones. Plus the fact that finding off the rack hats to fit my huge cranium was not easy in my neck of New Jersey. But I've got a lot of good memories of those hats.
So welcome to the next level in hat wearing but never forget those faithful friends that shaded you, protected you from the rain, and made you look good. They led you here.
We now return to our regularly scheduled program. ;-)

Thirty years ago in SoCal a friend of mine had a leather hat that kind of reminded me of something Clint Eastwood would wear in one of those old westerns. I never could find one and I guess I finally gave up when I moved back to the midwest.

Most of what I've had were canvas or straw. I've still got one of those old Panama Jack canvas hats like you'd see in his picture. From time to time I'd buy others--never could seem to have enough hats! I tried to get me (late) wife to wear hats but she was too self-conscious. My two daughters love to wear hats, but they (at times) suffer from the same affliction! I've told the older that for every day she doesn't wear one it's one day less that she can. (back from my tangent) For 20 years I wore an old Banana Republic panama hat (obviously in warmer weather). Eventually the straw got brittle the crown broke several times as did the brim; it received a moderately dignified funeral via cremation this past week  I replaced it last year with one from Orvis which has worked out pretty well. The band is a bit flexible and allows the hat to fit L/XL (I expect that at some point the flexibility will be gone and the hat will rest on my ears like one Barnard Fife. We venture down to Nashville (IN) each spring...sort of a ritual which we've continued for numerous years; it's sort of an artist colony, but the girls like to shop...and shop...and SHOP!!! :x: (just kidding) There's a hat shop there, but their selection is not as great as I'd like and I've never actually bought anything there; however, just seeing those blessed hats drove me online to look for someplace that had what I wanted. I guess when Indy4 came out I just couldn't help but to do my own shopping! Gotta run and pick up my girls from school.... excuse any typos!

It's still $69.85 for the standard and $108.47 for the deluxe. Makes me want to get another!

Keep in mind that the prices on hatsdirect are not always up to date.

You will always be charged AUD108.50 + s/h on the website and the exchange rate conversion will happen via your bank.

Like when I ordered, the exchange rate at that moment should have made the total $98 but Paypal wanted to charge $105.. because they only buy their AUD currency once a day at midnight (or at least that's when they update it). So I waited to pay until midnight and my total dropped to $99

Looks like it went back up though to about .71

So 108.5 = $77 still a great deal

Yeah, but the $108 is already converted to US dollars. Still a great deal, but not as great as you think it is. Look carefully. ;-)

No, it isn't though..

It's not like they convert the 108.50 on the website into XX (say $70) and then say "send us a payment for 70 US dollars". They say send us a payment for 108.50 AUD.. the conversion is up to you.

So it depends on what your bank is using for the current exchange rate

I'm way ahead of you guys. I ordered my Fed IV moonstone last week. I had to take advantage of the exchange rates! And who knows....if it keeps dropping I might just buy another one!

Yes I was surprised with no reply but I questioned further and received this message:

thanks for the order! We apologize for not responding to your email. We have been overwhelmed with orders and your reply was overlooked on 13th October.

Your Fed 4 is in stock and will leave next post via Air Mail as requested. The item number is *******.

The hat should arrive in 5 - 10 days from dispatch date.

If after fourteen days the goods have not arrived, please contact us immediately by email so we may trace the article. Do not be patient!

My credit card charge (ordered Sunday) finally appeared and I was very pleased to see that for a standard Fed plus a Dlx including shipping was only $215.88. What a deal! :) :) :)

I just ordered my Federation Deluxe IV (Dark Brown) earlier today.

I immediately got this email...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Liam,

This is an automated response to your order from hatsdirect.com

Thank you for your order. One of our staff will be in touch within the next 24 hours to confirm dispatch details.

Your order number is *****

Your credit card will be debited when your order is sent
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I never even thought about the possible exchange rate. I wanted it, so I ordered it. So, what I thought was $206.40, actually turns into $139.77 instead. :)

So, I guess it's entirely possible that I have to bug them for a confirmation email?
