Raiders/temple/LC question, Akubra, Miller...

Post by Indiana Joyce »

So...a few questions. I own an Akubra fed IV deluxe. The instructions say not to leave it in sunlight as the hatband would shrink. Would this cause the desired taper of a Raiders, or even moreso the drastic taper of a Temple of Doom?

Would you say an Akubra makes a better Raiders hat then a Miller? And a Miller hat would work better as a LC because of the shade of brown?

Just some stuff Ive been thinking about.

i own both of them (miller and akubra). yes an Akubra will make a better Raiders than a Miller. The Miller is more like a Young Indy style hat, with the wider ribbon and non dimensional brim.

I agree with Chiliana, the Miller makes a great YIJ fedora. But if you would trim the brim and add a smaller ribbon the Miller is a great candidate for the LC look.
The Fed IV makes a nice Raiders hat, however in my opinion it makes fantastic KOTCS hat

For a Raiders you should have no taper at all! :-k

Yes but its the angle of the pictures, the first hat is slightly tapered from another ( the raiders hat was slightly tapered) , There are NO indy movies with completly straight sided hats, in all 4 movies there are tapered hats. or at least slightly enough to notice.

Chiliana, those are a couple of fine-looking hats. From your photos, I would agree that the Miller looks like a great Young Indy hat, and the Fed works better for a Raiders hat.

I guess I better check if I'm watching the same movies, because the Raiders hat looks quite straight-sided to me--just like my AB and Fed, and that Fed of Chiliana's. ;-)

:) Best wishes,
Nebraska Schulte

Well I know that the easiest way to get the cairo taper on a raiders hat is to tighten the ribbon. You can see the indents in that photo posted.

Just been thinking about a miller hat for LC, i dunno. I will say this much..I work in a refrigerated warehouse(35 degrees) and we have a small freezer that is 0 and a big freezer that is minus 10...I wear my hat everyday and these are conditions it wasnt made for, but is holding up well. One day it was pouring out and I had to keep going in and out of the freezer so when I went home that night, I had ice on my hat.

Indy would be proud. :)

And add me to the list in that, while the Fed IV makes a good Raiders hat, it makes a great KOTCS hat.

I would love it. Thanks. I was also looking for shots of the bow for this one, TOD and LC. I was thinking of making the bow match the movie but after looking at both movies they look not only ugly. They look like blind monkeys sewn them on.

The only Raiders hats that showed any taper were ones that had gotten wet or left out in the heat. The hat and block shape itself were inherently straight sided to begin with.

Let me guess, the Christy's gives the right amount of taper right?

To begin with any Raiders look you need pretty much straight sides.
