I was just looking at this stuff, and wondering the same thing. The Ben Nye catalog says "also known as fuller's earth" (though some web sites say it is "similar to fuller's earth) but is it worth the risk?

Ben Nye is a theatrical makeup company.
I asked a guy who happens to be a theatrical make-up artist and works with Bill Nye products about putting character powders such as "ash, charcoal, and plains dust" on a felt fedora.

He said "NOOOOOOOOoooooOOOOO"

He said that the powders are mixed in with adhesives and dyes. And that if you are going to apply it to a fedora "ONLY PUT IT ON FOR THAT DAY"

He mentioned that one of the biggest problems w/ using it is that most people forget to remove it/clean it off their costumes at the end of the day. As a result, it ends up sticking onto finer/thinner threads in the material which will eventually end up giving a clunky colored blotch on the applied surfaces.

He also mentioned that having clothing items with character powder on under direct sunlight for a long time will also cause damage to your items (your fedora). He said that the dyes within the powder could potentially leave their residue onto the felt.

So if you guys use it, make sure to keep it on for a days purposes only. Otherwise, he recommended removing the sweatband and sweating into the hat itself to get those permanent marking onto the hat. (but really, who of us is really going to do that) or using dirt.

Well, that's all the information I got from a theatrical make-up pro.

phew... that was bit of typing
