FINALLY! My Magnoli HJ is here!!!!!
SO! It has finally arrived. After a mix up with my address due to me moving last month, and the post office HOLDING MY HAT FOR A MONTH EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW WHERE TO FORWARD IT!!!....... It has arrived, unscathed at that! The bash wasn't even too off despite it being in the "care" of the USPS for 3 weeks+.
In any case, I found it sitting at my door on a muggy evening here in Beantown. For those of you waiting on an HJ from Steve (Mitch I know you're one of them!) he wasn't too far behind with mine despite losing his apprentice. He actually sent it out to me 2 and a half months after I placed the order, but the post office mix up delayed it an extra 3 weeks. Anyways, I digress, I was quoted 2 months and can't complain. The hat is beautiful! It's floppy, it's got character, and although I know it will eventually taper and need a re-block sooner than an AB beaver would, it is so SA as far as ROTLA goes. IMHO anyways. I've only got one pic now unfortunately
More will come tomorrow night. For now a teaser!......

Congrats on your new Mags HJ! It looks just as awesome as it should, and it looks awesome on you to boot. Wear it well and yes, please post more pics when you get the chance.

ARRRRRGGGggghhh!
indyrocks, JUST when I thought the waiting couldn't get anymore PAINFUL... BOOM! you got me right in the GUT!
That hat looks GREAT (and great on ya!)...I suppose I should say "It looks like it was MADE FOR you... but then, it WAS, wasn't it?"
You're right, Oak... Steve did it AGAIN (guy makes the whole thing look and seem so easy!)
So, congrats, indyrocks! (And I'm with Tremolo... can't wait to see a few MORE shots - maybe a few profile and "bow" shots too? Hint, hint!)
Enjoy that lid, my friend... it's a great one (and the shirt couldn't be ANY cooler!)
All the Best,
Mitch

The bash was only slightly off out of the box.
Indiana G-I did do some slight tweaking. It was so easy since the hat was buttery. (These really are floppy hats!) I just looked at the waterfall/Hawaii screenshot as a reference for the side bashes. I think they are very distinct in that scene.
Steve IS a master. Not only did it look pretty much perfect out of the box, that was AFTER 3 weeks sitting at the post office.
The only sad thing is that I didn't wear it to work today because it was raining this morning and until I get a true beaver AB I don't want to risk it. This HJ will be the one lid that I "baby."
Mitch-thanks for the kind words. Your time is coming soon I can feel it... More pics this evening I promise!

So here are some more pics! Forgive the flash but I have bad lighting in my apt. It makes the color look lighter than it really is.

I actually like my Magnoli better than my AB. It is the best Raiders replica available in this solar system. I notice Steve is now tacking the ribben in the middle instead of along the bottom.
Your brim looks OK to me as it is, but you could try dampening the back of your brim with distilled water and weighting it with books until dry. I have also heard that ironing should be done at high setting with no steam.

I was thinking about the book option. Something just makes me not want to put a hot iron to it. I'll give it some more time and see how it looks with some wear. But looking a screenshots, it definitely does not seem so curled up to me in a lot of those photos....eazybox wrote:I actually like my Magnoli better than my AB. (Again thanks for the kind words folks!)
I don't have an AB (yet) to compare my HJ with, but I can understand liking the rabbit felt better. Although Steve would (and has) swear by his secret block shape that his AB felt is far superior to the HJ stuff. But as far as "liking" it better, it's all a preference thing. I have no doubt if worn in the rain my HJ will taper. And I'm sure an AB would outlast it by years. Still, I can see why one may prefer it. I'll be babying mine that's for sure.

For me, it is primarily because I am more a fan of the Raiders hat than any other.Satipo wrote:I'm surprised to hear that. Is it because it is more floppy?eazybox wrote:I actually like my Magnoli better than my AB. It is the best Raiders replica available in this solar system.
The look and feel of the Magnoli, the floppier felt, etc., and the fact that it is an HJ all contribute to that. And you can't beat the HJ's color, in my opinion. There is no doubt that the AB is better quality, though.

Not a chance! I spent over 20 years searching for a hat that hit all the right notes, and I'm not eager to take any risks at all after finding it. But I have seen photos of Steve's Magnoli which he sat on a few times, and it looked great. It's up to the individual whether or not to experiment with an expensive collector's item like this. Me? No way.indyrocks wrote:Jack-
Did you do any form of distressing to your HJ? Crumpling it up or anything like that? To make it even floppier and give it more character? I'm contemplating doing this but am afraid...
The only work I did on mine was to tweak the front pinch and brim a little and lower the back of the crown slightly, from 4 1/4 to 4 inches, using a little water. ;-)

I just tried to search for it, but the forum is giving me trouble. It may have been either "Magnoli HJs?" or "The Magnoli HJ Showoff Thread" (not sure those are the exact thread titles), but it was so long ago and there have been so many threads on the Magnoli that I can't be sure. Perhaps Steve will see this and provide the photos if he still has them.indyrocks wrote:Do you happen to know where the photos of said sat-on-hat are??
