Peace bonding?

Post by davros72 »

Hey folks, got a question. Is there an ideal way to "peace bond" your bullwhip?

"A peace-bonding is a conspicuous lock, tie, or mark which makes or identifies something as unusable as a weapon, that is, that the owner's intentions are purely peaceful." (per Wikipedia)

The intention is to be able to walk around conventions and other events and still have your bullwhip with you. I had to leave my whip at home for the KOTCS midnight showing because the theater manager said it would not be allowed (though I saw several at the theater that night anyway...).

Thanks for your help!

My guess would be to have some sort of very bright-orange binding of some sort. Maybe 2 or 3 velcro loops that attach at different points around the coiled whip? I don't know if this will be automatically understood as peace bonding, but it's worth a try. See the problem here is that unlike other objects that have a more clearly defined surface as the "danger" zone (a gun's muzzle, a knife's edge...), a bullwhip is really only useful as a whip if it is uncoiled and thrown, but asside from keeping it coiled on your belt, how else do you convey that idea? I would say perhaps to make a deal with whomever is organizing the event and get them to agree that such a bonding be the norm for all who wish to wear their whips at the event if safety is an issue regarding whips. As a quick stand-by for those who may not have obeyed these regulations, you could have a roll of orange fluorescent tape at the door and any whips not peace bonded by their wearers, could be for free right there in two minutes. So not everybody likes having tape put on their whips, but if its a major even and these are rules that are made public, then it was their responssibility to do it in the first place, wasn't it?

Other than that, I have no idea.

Nylon zip ties on at the handle and maybe one further at the bottom of the loops.

That's how they do it at some conventions here. (with guns to attach them to holsters and swords to scabbards too).

I was about to say, zip ties for electric wire tiedown are the usual tie choice for this situation. They have to be cut off when you're done, so there's no change of the item being pulled out after passing through the doors of a convention.

This is an issue I run into all the time at Renaissance Faires. I carry the whip, a broad sword, and 18" main gauche, a heavy dagger, a stiletto and two boot daggers-why-because I can!! Most all the Faires require the weapons to be peace tied-secured so that they cannot be drawn or deployed. I use a zip tie on the whip, brown in color and position it up near the hanger on my belt. Other places request you wear one of their ties. Depends on the venue. And I can understand their point, the last thing you want is two people going at it with potentially lethal weapons.

Very true indeed. I always loved this IJ scene, and was again reminded of it when I read this last post. It's funny on so many levels.

That's why I always bring my Remington 870 to the Ren-Faires. "Peace bonded", of course. lol! :) ;-)

I have two of the "Rundown" holsters from GLD Enterprises.

The Leather and Velcro strap "Peace Bind" it adequately for Ren Faires and Cons, and it helps keep the handle from dragging the ground.
