I just received my new stockwhips form Gus Caicedo http://www.purewhips.com. Gus went out of his way these.

They are excellent. I have only had a few minutes tonight with them and they still need some loosening up.
They are 20" handles with 5.5ft thongs.
I turned the handles out of Purpleheart they are 3/4" at the base and 1/2" at the top. The weight is moderate-heavy on the handle and out the thong.
The brown on the fall is the dye from the keeper. I am totally impressed with them. Gus again has shown great ability in his craft and excellent customer service. So keep in mind if you are looking for non-Indy whips he can do those too.

Wow, those are beautiful. And you turned the handles yourself out of purple heart. A great looking wood that ages beautifully and an awesome way to contribute to your own whop. Were you given specifications on it or did you work them out with Gus? I only ask as I also turn too-beautiful work anyway.
I have ordered a whip from Gus and cannot wait to get mine. Ah this whip thing is fun!
So, how do they crack?

Thanks for the compliment. I did a little research and arrived at the diameter I asked Gus what he thought the maximum length should be and viola.
From my limited time cracking this evening. They seem to do great. They are little stiff still and I am wrestling with the keepers one is a tad stiffer than the other, but is loosening up.
I am very impressed with the weight. I am trying to figure out why they crack so loudly. The handle and thong are heavy-ish, however, the fall is light with a medium cracker. I honestly do not know how, but they are super super loud I mean 2x louder than my matched pair of 5.5ft bullwhips.
I have just been so tickled they they turned out so well. Gus and I talked about how to wrap the handle, to keep enough wood but still have some leather.
I am very very pleased and thank you again for the compliment. I am also glad to hear there is another woodworker about. BTW I was able to get those handles out of a 7/8" x 7/8" x 46" piece of Purpleheart with one try. Considering my low-level experience on my lathe I was please.
One last thing bobm2004 what did you order from Gus?
