Just for fun: Favorite/least favorite style Indy jacket

Post by Ravenswood »

My favorite is the Raiders style. I like the way it clings to the body, yet the leather is soft and flexible enough to give. I also like how it appears to be almost too short, kinda like a biker jacket. That, and the fact that the side straps are slightly higher up than the rest of the styles, allowing easier access access to the "utilitities". It makes the functionality of the jacket readily apparent.
The Temple of Doom cut is just wrong in all the right places for me  It appears to be too long, the side buckles are way down low. I'm not too fond of the collar style either, just too big. Plus the leather appears to be cowhide. I'm not really a cowhide person so much. It's just too thick, and seems to retain water, rather than resisting it. The lambskin Raiders style that I have seems to have retained it's softness over many rainstorms, and no treating whatsoever, while the Cowhide jacket I have has a terrible reaction to moisture.
I read somewhere that the Temple style was Harrison Ford's least favorite style of jacket. Or was he talking about the Last Crusade style?:-k
How 'bout you guys? Which of the four film jacket styles are all right/ all wrong for you?

I always liked the LC jacket, since that was always THE Indy movie for me (being the first Indy movie I remember watching), and in a way is like the most evolved jacket (press-studs!) in the original trilogy. That, and the KotCS jacket, since the latter was basically the next generation after that, and had a baggier fit that one could always grow into!

I wouldn't say I hate any of the Indy jackets, but my least favorite would probably have to be the ToD jacket. Maybe it's just because we don't see much of it, or maybe it's because it looked a bit insubstantial to me for an Indy jacket (how ironic!), but whatever the reason, it just never connected with me the way the other jackets did.

Uhm... the ToD jacket is the same lenth as the others and it is the most obviously lamb skin of all of them. Ford hated the lining in the ToD jacket beacuse it was too hot. I doubt that he can tell the difference between any of them. When he looked at jackets for CS he chose a flighsuits fan jacket as the basis of the nex Nowak jacket - he could have chosen an original Raiders... so there you go.

Something Special about the Raiders Jacket...

Post by Ravenswood »

I just think there's something special about the Raiders jacket that sets it apart from the rest. In some scenes, the leather seems papery thin, like its fluttering in the wind, but still manages to look rugged on screen.
Even tho they used lambskin for Temple of Doom and Crusade, it was thicker, and just didnt drape as nicely as the rest of em, imo.

I'd have to say the Raiders jacket is my favorite, though the Last Crusade jacket is a very close second. In fact, if the Last Crusade jacket looked as good in the film as it does in this publicity photo...

...it would be my favorite. There's just something about the way the jacket looks in that photo, like it's the most comfortable garment in history.

Least favorite is the Temple of Doom jacket. I know Ford's physique changed between the time he was fitted for his wardrobe and the time filming began, but throughout the film it just looks ill-fitting, like he's wearing someone else's jacket.

I think that the Raiders jacket is by far the coolest. But, unlike most of the people here I actually like the ToD jacket. Indy looks at his most rugged and "used" in the end sequence and the jacket really looks like it has been through a lot of actual abuse. Some great distressing. The LC jacket looks a bit to "suity" to me although it looks good. Last would be CS. Wasn't too taken by that jacket... it looks a bit "middle-aged" So... to me... the jackets coolness decreases with each film. Maybe I just have a very late 70s/early 80s taste in clothing... lol

The best jacket is the LC for me. 2nd place for Raiders. The worst? KOTCS, of course.

I like them all for different reasons.

If I had to pick only 1 from the 4 it had to be LC.

to me the raiders looks a bit TOO thin in some scenes.I am not a big fan of paper thin leather..but not a fan of too thick leather either.

something in between..

the look of Mola Ram's raiders in cowhide just look yum to me.

looks really cool and raiders drapy pluss its a tuff leather.

so the question about why I like the jackets is......

the LC jacket has a kinda '' the grown up'' mans jacket stamp on it.

but the raiders has the ''cool adventure and boyish'' stamp on it.

Yep... I checked out the collar in your other thread and it's a Raiders alright... the collar stand goes all the way to the storm flap.

I'm going with TOD because I too love the Raider's look but like the look of a thicker jacket (I agree with Holt about the Raider's jacket looking thin in a few scenes). I'm not partial to the LC for one reason alone and that's the storm flap buttons. The jacket’s construction is fine but the buttons make it look manufactured... like assembly line, everyone and there brother can own one.

I know that may irritate a few but it’s my honest opinion. For me it's the "snaps", they ruin it for me.

I never knew the dif between any of them until I found this messed up forum :- That being said, I voted the LC being my least favorite due to the crappy collar. The distressing look good IMO and yes it does look grown up in most scenes, but the jacket with the Dumbo collar just looks crappy to me. Funny since my first Indy jacket was an LC. The new CS collar makes it look better.

Raiders is the best IMO. I love my G&B Raiders cut the very best but will get a Temple from Wings or Wested depending on the final versions of each. Temple should have seen much more time on screen. It is a very cool jacket and I loved seeing it every second on screen. In fact, now that I think about it, my first choice on indyjacket.com was the temple, but I thought that the press studs were an upgrade

My favorite is the Raiders jacket, because to me it is THE jacket. I just like the overall look more than any of the other jackets. My least favorite is the CS jacket, because I'm not a big fan of the baggier fit. And, unlike most other people here, I really like the TOD jacket. I dunno why. I just like how abused it looks. Just my two cents.

My favorite is the Raiders. My least Favorite is the LC. I can't get over the collar. It looks like something that Don Knotts as "Mr. Furley" would wear. #-o I'm not crazy about the CS jacket either for obvious reasons.

I voted for the LC.
I love all the movie jackets, I guess, but the Last Crusade jacket is the one I would most happily wear on the street today.
Raiders to me just looks a bit too...well, I don't know. But the LC just looks like a cool leather jacket that doesn't look so out of place on me in 2008.
I'm hoping Peter's new Temple jacket will top it soon though; I like it's length and smaller pockets. With the right leather and colour, it could be a new favourite for many, I think!
