is the FS post mod really that much different and the pre?
i was just wondering, since i am going to (hopefully) pruchase a new jacket this fall, hopefully a FS expedition. i am wondering if someone can tell me the specifics on what was changed. thanks/
The main thing different is pocket placement. On the prototype, they'll be more to the side of the jacket. On the current ones, it'll be more to the front. If there's any other differences, I don't know about them, so somebody else will have to chime in. Maybe do a search for prototype on this forum.

Gussets are standard. The other change was the thickness of the pocket material, as the first iteration was just using the same thickness of leather with lining as their A-2 flight jackets. This made the front of the jacket ride up when you sat down. They removed one thickness of leather last year, and the pocket now drapes and moves as easily as the rest of the jacket. Their phone number is 800-748-6693. Regards. Michaelson

In a related post, check out the photos of Minnesota Jones new seal FS. There is an excellent example there. The gusset is the oval shaped insert that is installed in the armpit of the sleeve, allowing for freer overarm motion and movement. It was mainly used for the stunt jackets, but there is an example photo of Ford wearing one with gussets on the back cover of the 'Star's hardback book. Regards. Michaelson

On my previous Wested Goat (which I no longer have - sold it due to mis-sizing on my part), I did not have gussets. After wearing it a bit, I realized why so many here like the gussets, and I ordered my latest one with gussets. I have yet to receive it, but I did have opportunity to try on a FS some months ago (albeit a size too large), and found the gussets to be worthwhile.
I know that without gussets your range of arm motion is limited without having the jacket ride up on you. I'm sending my Wested back today because its not long enough and am requesting gussets on the new one.Farnham54 wrote:Okay, so basically, is there a huge noticable difference in comfort? say if I were to use it both for to-ing and fro-ing the city, as well as the odd bush adventure...guessets or no?
Thanks for the explanation, guys!

Oh, I don't really know. It really depends on how much overhead movement you have when wearing a jacket. If you swing a whip a lot, or work overhead, then they're really great. Do I really think they're absolutely the last word? Not really, as I have a Wested without, and an FS with, and have to say one is as comfortable as the other with my range of movements on any given day. Now, if you plan on being held up a lot, then gussets are a real God send.... 8-[ Regards. Michaelson

I think I'll go no gussets on the first one; but thanks for all the info (also, sorry to hijack your thread, IC)
My second Wested (well, third technically) will have them I think, and I'll save it for more of a dressy thing...but one final question, are the gussets very easily noticable when wearing the jacket?
Regards,
Farn
P.S. Thanks a bunch for all the info, gents. Sorry to be such a pest!

In my opinion, the gussets on the Expedition in conjunction with the pleated back (with the elastic bands beneath the lining), and the pleated lining, really make for a more comfortable jacket. It’s just a better design plain and simple. It makes for a real adventure’s jacket. Likewise I think that the Navy G-1 is a better designed jacket than the Air Force A-2, because it shares many characteristics with the Expedition. Of course the original film jackets had no elastic bands beneath the lining, nor did they have a pleated lining (which are both necessary to really reap the benefits [ease of movement] of a pleated back). Nobody really knows if Harrison Ford's Raiders jacket had the underarm gussets included or not. The stunt jackets definitely did. The pic of Ford where the gusset is clearly visible was a publicity shot. Maybe the dvd will shed some light on the subject. I'll say that it makes sense that Ford's jacket would have the gussets as he was doing a lot of "physical acting", but nobody knows for sure, yet. Cheers

I know y'all'll (is that Georgian?) correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that when Indy and Marion and waiving the torches at the snakes, around the moment when Indy questions her about Belloq, you can clearly see Harrison wearing a jacket with gussetts.Rundquist wrote:Nobody really knows if Harrison Ford's Raiders jacket had the underarm gussets included or not.
