If my head is round, how can I get the swoop??!!??

Post by indyrocks »

So I've got a Magnoli HJ arriving very very soon (as far as I understand it). My question is this: I've got a very round head. Does that pretty much take me out of the running in terms of achieving the swoop via the turn? What can I do to remedy this and at least obtain some degree of swoop? Simply curl the brim on the right side as much as I can? What can us round headed folks do???

I still think you should get the turn. You may have to turn it a bit more than most. I don't think your head looks like this from above, O

True Oak, but it sure is close. I just don't want to overly distort the hat in the process. But I will trust what you say as I realize you know what you're doing much more than I do!

Another question for you OAk-

If you're bashing a hat idol grab style, are you shipping it out with a super tight pinch? Let's say it needs to be re-done to accommodate a rounder head shape. Is the crease too strong at that point?

Idol grab is a very tight crease or any raiders for that fact. I would suggest to get it open crown and call me. I'll walk you though the creasing.

I have exactly the same problem Indyrocks! My head it's pretty round, and because of this, lots of hats doesn't fit me. The brim loses it's "natural" shape.
In order to solve that, I always go with a hat specialist in order to put that shape in the hat.
In fact I was considering to send to Steve the shape of my head, to put it in my AB. (NOTE: I get the shape of my head by using a wood thing made specially for that... it has lots of moving parts that has some "needles" at the top, they put cardboard and press it... in that way, you get exactly your shape... btw my head isn't symmetrical :? )

i have the same problem, all i did was curl the brim sides a little and i was happy with that, i think you need a really nice good quality hat to achive the classic turn and pull it off.

heres my hat that after months of messing around with im finally comfortable with it :)

Thanks for the feedback guys! I have a Magnoli HJ on the way so we'll see what kind of luck I can get. I actually haven't owned anything but a fed III the past few years due to the fact I was on a college budget. Now that I'm a big boy with a job I can finally splurge on some quality lids.

Oak-I think you know I'm on your list, but have a while to wait anyways. I might just take you up on that offer, which I appreciate very much! I'll see how things go with the HJ regarding the turn and go from there. I might have just enough of an oval so I'll keep my fingers crossed!

(My neck hurts from staring at the top of my head in the mirror! Doh! :x )

I'm sorry there is no turn that hat. I don't think you understand what the Raiders turn is.If the hat was turned, the front end of the bow would be closer to the front of the hat.

Once turned, I've read that the ribbon can be rotated back by itself, keeping it in the proper place, no matter how turned the hat itself is

Usualy the ribon is tacked into place with some stiches, so usualy you can't turn the ribon back.

Hey BendingOak, I remember that discussion.

It was a few months back. He had a question about the turn and in the end it turned out that he had not quite understood what the turn was. As he had already put a Raiders-bash in the hat he decided to keep it un-turned and work on the brim.

It was also the thread in which Bink said that he would add some information to the FAQ thread about the turn when he had the time.

In my case, I didn't mean to have "The Turn" in my hat... just the fact that due to the shape of my head, everytime a use a "regular" hat (with an oval shape) the brim loses it's "natural" shape and it looks like some kind of "road-kill" and by doing that little curve, the brim doesn't "deforms" or do funny things...

I think he's just joking, indyrocks. If you have a very round head, it may be more difficult to achieve the swoop via the turn, since the turn/swoop effect has a lot to do with the shape of your head against the hat.

Ah yes yes I figured....Well I'll just have to wait and see. My neck hurts from looking in the mirror at the top of my head so I'll wait to try on the hat once I get it. Which will hopefully be very very soon.... :whip:

The more you turn the hat, the closer you get to wearing a round oval, and this would help the brim not distort. And, if you put padding behind the sweat, only in the front and back, that would give you a longer oval head, in effect. You might then get the brim swoop you were looking for before. Move the paddding to keep it in front and back as you turn the hat. The padding will tighten up the hat, but these videos prove the Raiders hat was very tight. viewtopic.php?t=33266

So Ford never pushed the ribbon back correct? He couldn't have since it was stitched on.... Would it be fair to say it's easiest to detect when the hat is turned by looking at the shots of him straight on and seeing how far forward the ribbon is?

Also-forgive me if I should know this, but is there a turn in LC?

The bow should be a tip off if the hat is turn but if looking head on you should see it in the brim.
