Ordered my Fed IV today! Began my AB savings fund today!

Post by laughograms »

Hey everyone! Very very pleased to announce to the only group of people on the Internet who could possibly give a flaming rat's behind, that I ordered my Fed IV today. I had measured my head a while ago and it seemed like a 63 was the thing to do, but I have since taken to wearing my hair much shorter, and over the last couple of days have measured my head and come out around 61.5 so I ordered a 62. A 7 3/4 by Akubra's count.

Usually, when I get a baseball cap, I have to get a 7 7/8 because a 7 3/4 is a little snug. But I measured and remeasured and sure enough my head is a half a cm under a 62. Just to check I measured my "XL" DP wool hat which I wear every day and it measures somewhere in the neighborhood of 59-60 (hard to be precise) and it is snug -- too snug, but not hideously uncomfortable.

I think with the sizing tape and all I should be OK. What do you guys think? Any opinions on this most welcome ASAP, before I confirm everything with Hats Direct.

Now I can start saving for my AB, a process I expect to take a year or so. Steve tells me he will be in business for at least as long as it takes me to save up and then some.

I had pondered what to do for a hat purchase for a long time; I had the beautiful Camptown and Penman hats in the mix for a while but I decided I really really do want an AB. I wanted a proper hat that would be rugged and last me through the savings period for the AB, so the Akubra it is, and I couldn't be more excited.... now to slip a few bucks in the hat fund can and get started on the AB savings. Donations welcome! :D

my head measure a 56, so i ordered a 56 fed iv.
looks like akubra size a little big.

when my hat arrived like 2 months ago was a little big for my head.nothing the foam that come with the hat couldn´t fix.
after the first week of constant use,the hat srinked a bit,and now it fits like a globe.

gonna love your akubra

Hello laughograms,
My plan was exactly like yours with a little difference... I purchase my Fed IV Dlx about a month ago and TODAY ordered my AB!!!! Wohooo!!! :D
About the sizing of the Akubra, i meassure my head and according to the tape it was 60.5 cm so i ordered a 61 and with the foamy thing it fit perfect, but today i meassure my head and sorprise!!! ... The tape said 59, so i order my AB size 59 (or 23 1/4 in), and i think this happened because i cut my hair... Or maybe my head shrinked  hahaha.
I hope that this info would help you, and well, as tucolino said... you gonna love your Akubra, and maybe when i receive my AB, I would say... Your gonna want to get married with your AB haha  ...
Good things,

-Alfonso :D

By the way, i have wore my Akubra for 2 whole weeks, from early morning till late at night and haven't shrink a bit. I don't know what happend with ticolino's hat... :?
And supposedly the Akubras doesn't shrink due to the process they make.

well my fed passed some trekking under not heavy but consistent rain, sun, swet, mud, lots of sand...

i guess all that make the hat srink.not much but enough for me to take the foam.

also, i did order an ab like 3 months ago.the hat according to everybody here at cow is the best you can get.i still got a long wait, but don´t care to much.i´m patient and i will have one of bendigoak´s incredible hat in the meantime,so no problems for me

Hola tucolino! I think that wearing the hat in those conditions MAY shrink a hat hahahaha.
And yes, we'll have to wait in order to get an amazing hat... but no problems about waiting over here.... haha.

i bought a Fed 4 with the idea that id then order a AB.......
I love the fed 4 so much that I just dont see the point in buying another hat.

the Akubas are made TOUGH. they are REAL hats made to take a beating and keep going...
as little as i wear mine, i figure it'll serve its purpose just fine.
OH btw, if you have the fed 4, youve GOT to cut that plastic part out....... i did..... make the hat alot more breathable

Well, I agree a little bit with you, but having an AB it's like having a David Morgan Bullwhip! You get something like the real movie prop made by the same guys that did it for the movie!.

Yep, actually there is a continous condensation of sweat in the plastic part or if you put your lid with your hair not completely dry. But what i do, is clean up that part continously, i doesn't have the "will" to cut it off! haha.

Ha, it's not the wait for Steve to work his voodoo but the wait to fill up my now-legendary McCann's Irish Steel Cut Oats can. I try to pick up some side jobs here and there and I put a chunk of what i make in there to start with. It's only got a couple of bucks worth of seed money in there now... that will change.

As I understand it it's not the felt that shrinks, it's the leather sweatband (probably due to perspiration). I seem to recall reading somewhere that Akubra takes this slight shrinkage factor into consideration and fabricates their sweatbands accordingly when making their hats.

Yep... I read about that too. But when the leather sweat band shrinks, how much does it shrink? (approx)

That all depends on the sweatband.

It should be no more than a 1/8 of an inch.
