Anyone? What is "soft" goatskin? Is it the same as their regular goat?????
Anyone buy one yet? I wonder if the body is longer as in the lamb ROLA special.... Peter?
Wested - Special Offer Raiders ROLA Soft Goatskin
This special offer comes in soft 'Authentic' brown Goatskin
This authentic copy from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' specifications include two-way pockets, action pleats for arm movement, side vents,
Unlike the Standard raiders which has slight modification to make it durable and street wearable this 'film jacket' although equally wearable is more lightweight.
There are no inside leather facings, the body is slimmer and the sleeves more tapered. The zip is a smaller 5 gauge nickel and the action pleat depth is narrower with two piped inside pockets.
There have always only been two ROLA jacket, this is one of them. I think the "soft" part of the disciption means nothing, it's the same goatskin as the others they sell I'm sure because that's true of the other ROLA offering (authentic brown lambskin). Whiskeyman had one and has recently put it up for sale (his had shoulder pads). viewtopic.php?t=33246
The old style goatskin that was popular but was discontinued due to sizing problems was quite thick and pebbley, heavier than say a novapelle jacket.
To distinguish that from the current goat, he's calling the new stuff "soft goat" and he's absolutely right, it's soft, thin and pliable, slightly pebbly but it's another one that feels almost like lamb. But has the extra toughness of being goat.
Bad pics, but they show the draping quality of this leather.
How thick was the old goat, I got my otr in June,so is it the new or old stuff? I compared it to my cooper a-2 and it seemed just as thick. I have a g-1 from the 70's it's not as thick as that jacket. By the way anyone intersted in a g-1 size 42 true 42 pm me. I would love to trade it to someone who would wear it, the jacket just sits in my closet,it's way way let me say again way too small for me.
Goat was unavailable in a Wested for a long time after they depleated their initial supplies.. so the old goat probably refers to that initial stock. Only recently has goat become available again at Wested... and it's apparently softer than before.

The lower pic is the better colour repro.
That's sort have been my position lately about goatskin over lambskin. I have a few goatskin jackets that are so soft, thin, & pliable that they could almost pass for lambskin. Plus you get the strength. It really depends on the skin. Cheers
I received a custom goatskin CS jacket in June. It's not the washed goat. As KT indicated, it's considerably thinner than Wested's previous batch of goat. I like the thin goat, but I preferred the thicker goat. It doesn't even seem like the same type of hide, except for the texture. Both seem to be about as pebbled.
Either way, it's clearly a tough hide, and I don't expect it to distress very easily. In fact, it might never look distressed, even after years of wear. I also think the base is a lot darker than than lamb, so even if it did distress, it probably wouldn't be as visible. It does drape more like the lamb than did the previous stock of goat.
